Thanato

Is anyone gonna watch this movie?
"Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption."

I saw it in IMAX last night and I loved it. If you can, for the love of god go see it in IMAX, it will blow you away.
Don't be fooled by the trailer though, it's not an action movie from beginning to end. There is alot of symbolism, political tension, and philisophical dialogue throughout the movie. And these three things certainly help build up the action when things do heat up.
Bottom Line: Pace wise- Vendetta does have pit-falls every now and then, but there are so many scenes that will spark your thoughts and tingle your spine, that you can easily forgive it's stumblings.

It's based on a graphic novel, only difference is the book is set in the 80's kinda post Thatcher era.

I thought it was based on a comic book series by Marvel? I just gave a lotta wrong information to a freind if it wasn't. >.>
The Doctor
Mar 18 2006, 07:19 PM
lol Well it was originally published in comic book format by dark horse I think though. Then it was made into a graphic novel, it was by the same guy who did From Hell.

V is basically a Nemoian character, who was wronged in the past and now is a vigilante to bring what he sees as justice to those who wronged him and others. The philosohpical parts aren't vague and confusing like Matrix Revolutions, but they really make you think and keep interested in the story. Most of the movies is about discovering who V really is and why he is doing what he is. It isn't like other comic movies, where the viewer sees everything from the hero's point and because of this it helps build the mystery around V. I'm glad there isn't going to be a sequel to this movie, because sequels tend to water down the reputation of the originals. I went to this thinking it would be another dull comic movie, but I was surprised at how deep and though-provoking it was.
I'd give it a 10 out of 10.
The wait for the DVD begins.

It was written and drawn by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, I saw the movie last night and would recommend it. It's more of a thriller than an action movie though, I'd give it 8 or 9 out of ten

i saw it on 3/18/06. it was good very deep scripting. this is a movie one has to watch more than once to understand everything. i liked it. not the typical DC/Marvel comic superhero movie but that's good for a change. i recommend this movie becasue it makes me think and not just watch.

I saw the movie a few days ago, and I have to say that I really liked it. I've read the graphic novel, and was sort of disappointed at some minor changes that they made for the movie. I could tell that many people were expecting an action movie with some drama rather than a political thriller with some action, because the trailer presented it that way. V was awesome!

Essentially, it was as if the writer decided to gather up the most popular conspiracy theories and make a movie about them.
It was a moderatly interesting movie. Not really an action flick.
It is inevitable that conspiracy theoriest will somehow tout this movie as some sort of message, as opposed to the simple supply/demand process of Hollywood.
(31oha2a121)
Mar 21 2006, 01:13 PM
^ my thoughts exactly. i mean conspiracy theorys only really developed after the publishing of books by paranoid writers and the arize of Hollywood narratves about conspiracies. after discoering that these movies, and books sold, the media interest has rocketed.
yes, im sure the government does do SOME things that we dont know about , but my point is, we havent heard about them and are we damaged as a society? No. are people going missing who think Reptoloids rule the earth? No. (or maybe because they should be taken away by the men in white coats.)
we have lived in a 1984 style sociey for a long time, for exmple: the internet was invented durig World War 2 and we never even heard of it until after the Cold war. Yes the government has secrets... so do most people, however theyre probably doing us a favour not telling us them.

Was Portman's performance once again disturbingly similar to that diaper-wearing orangutan that co-starred with Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can?
I know its hard to tell them apart...he's the one covered in orange hair and makes farty noises with his lips.
Oh and is it true that the 'geniuses' (I could barely type that without a chuckle) that created that over-hyped, contrived pile of crap, the Matrix have a hand in this?
Wow...Natalie Portman and the producers of the Matrix working together on the same movie...I may go see it just to stare up at the screen pointing and laughing hysterically.

It is one of many movies coming out that is trying to enlighten the public as to what is going on in society today and what is to come. It is inevitable the message will be lost on many.

:::Possible Spoilers:::
Saw this last night and really enjoyed it!!
It really highlights the importance of perspective and context, and gives you much to think about!
The main questions I think it raises are: Can acts of terrorism against the State ever be justified?? Is killing in the name of the State considered any different to the killing by civilians? If so, should it be? What price is worth paying for the feeling of being secure as a nation? How reliant on any Government should the people be?
The message it sends out is quite a powerful one; that revolution is always possible if the people can recognize it is needed.
The only criticisms I really have are with the ‘British Network’, where everyone on it says how proud they are to be ‘English’; again forgetting how they really are
not the same thing, including the Chancellor!
I thought Portman’s acting was a lot more convincing than the dodgy southern accent she was putting on.

Keira Knightley would have been a more obvious choice for this role I think. But anyway that is just nickpicking; if you haven’t seen it yet I’d recommend checking it out!

I saw it last saturday...quite good actually. Definatly not what I was expecting at all but it was still good in its own way. It reminded me alot of Orwells 1984.
Just be prepared to see something thats more political and philosophical then action. Like others have said, the trailer lies about this films genre. But in the end it was actually better then what I came to see.

The Matrix was a good movie, my main problem with it is that they ripped some scenes and themes from Ghost in the Shell. Of course, that's not really a "problem." Yes, but they just wrote the screenplay. Which is based off of a graphic novel from the early '80s.
Natalie Portman does a great job, much better then her previous movies. (You should know which ones I am refering to.)

Not seen this and I hate going cinemas for some reason so I always have to wait for the DVD, and I will be catching this because I love the paranoid futurstic movies such as the Matrix, 1984 etc...
Going off topic kinda has anyone play Beneath a Steel Sky, a very atmospheric futuristic game about paranoia, isolation and claustrophobia...well made game, kinda short though.

A lot of people are upset that V for Vendetta seemingly glorifies terrorism, I disagree for the fact that while V did blow up building and assasinate Govt/religious figures, you'll note that the buildings he bombed were by and large empty, not to mention the Govt officials he killed were guilty of mass murder, the only other people killed by his hands were cops and fingermen, and although some may have been innocent, they are well aware of the risks inherent in their jobs when they apply.

Actually, the government killed more people than V did during the course of the movie. The first building he blew up had no one in it becasue it was past curfew and everyone was at home.
