Big Love, bigger questions

Posted by Mollie

BigLoveMy fiance reviewed the new HBO drama Big Love for the New York Sun this week — which meant I got to watch the first several episodes before they air. It’s a very compelling show that normalizes polygamy. In real life, polygamists are known for raping family members, forcing underage girls into marriage, and living on the dole. In HBOland, polygamists are attractive and upright citizens who you’d let watch your children. But, again, if you set apart the obvious agenda against traditional values, it’s an excellent show that begins airing tomorrow night.

(Of course this is about a man who "owns" three women. I suppose they will do the next new show on how much better it is in nations where women cannot vote and how daughters are happier when their parents sell them into marriages in some places. Polygamous societies usually have death penalties for homosexuality. Maybe they want to try a come back for that too. - Bella)

If only they had hired a gorgeous man for the lead!
Then again, perhaps they figured having him drop dead sexy would be seen as advertising the practice. Complete with that visual for the lifestyle sales slogan: "Why worry about if your man is faithful? Live with his lovers and you'll know what he's up to!" w00t.gif

rofl.gif If the ratings go down perhaps they can reprise the role with Matthew Mcconaughey or something.

that's good right there. i'm not going to watch this show, not that i find it anymore heinous than your average tv show, i just don't watch too much television, besides the occasional movie that is. (and mortal kombat related television series are also watchable)

IMO... Polygamy has nothing to do with religion, but more about domination and power hiding behind the cloak of religion. All this show is going to accomplish is to put an attractive face on a growing problem of incest, rape and oppression of women.

I am yet to understand why women reduce themselves to such life styles (polygamy)... of course man like it and laugh about it ... but really... what is on these women minds that they actaully allowed themselves mocked in such fashion ? no.gif

funny thing is ... why doesnt anyone make a sit com about the down-low, and the true obscure man fantasies??? that would be fun wink2.gif

Because most of these "women" are under the age of 16. They live in secluded, small towns where most everyone is a polygamist, belonging to the same church. Children are beaten, most of the time, into submission. Women are afraid to leave. Most times leaving means leaving your children behind. There was a case in the news not long ago, where in the Nevada desert, a 16-yo girls was taken to a barn and brutally beaten by her father until she fell unconscious. The reason? She tried to escape because she did not want to marry her uncle! And it was not the first time. She was just lucky enough this time to walk miles in the desert, find a phone and call 911. You have to remember as well, cops in some of these small towns are also polygamists and are likely to just take these kids back to the situation they came from.

Boys coming of age are routinely kicked out of these religous sects, we have droves of them that come to Phoenix looking for help. The older men in the church see them as a threat. Who in their right minds would pick some dirty old man over a boy their own age? So, these kids are cast out, literally without any education or work experience. Girls are taken out of school, in most cases before they are done with the 6th grade.

These kids know no other lifestyle. All they know is if they run and are caught, they are either beaten ruthlessly or disowned by their family and sent out into a world they are very ill-equipped to deal with, especially with no education or marketable job skills.
