What do you think?

I think it is a good idea, i was raised American Standard, so I want to learn metric because I have never been exposed to it
_Nyx_
One year in school they tried to make us learn metric.....I was never so confused in my whole life......just leave things the way they are..... yes.gif
__Kratos__
I think the US should switch to metric. It would help the US work with the rest of the world more. Not to mention the confusion it would save. tongue.gif I've used more metric in the last year because of this site then I have probably in my entire life. laugh.gif

chunga
NO!!! First metric system, next who know what Euro mind bending gobblygoop we might end up converting to. Conversion is not good. There is a kid chef on Nickelodeon that my children watch and he uses measurements that are metric. My God, add 3/4th of a Kilometer of tomato sauce??? What?? I thought Kilometer's were like miles or something.
Yuk.

Use metric, and change to a lunar calendar.

I voted no...

Could you imagine trying to teach the rednecks to convert?

Redneck's?? Good ole Boy's have as much intelligence Quotant as any other ethnicity.
How smart you are depend's on where your standing. I take offense to your use of the
label Redneck . Remember the words of Forrest Gump " Stupid is as stupid does".

then you should all drive on the correct side of the road, and sit on the correct side of the car.

I have seen 'backwoods' people first hand, and I would disagree with that comment...

Ignorance is relative. You were out of your comfort zone and different rules apply when one ventures outside that zone. Perhaps you should keep to the rivers and streams your use to. The humorous part of your comment is that you were the one being judged ignorant by the local's Iam sure. As I said One is as intelligent as where their standing.

no, I am sorry, when people stop, stare and openly talk about my Mexican friend in front of him, thats not what I would say was acceptable behaviour, would you?????

when someone hands him some car-keys outside a bar because they automatically assumed he was a valet parker, would you say that was not ignorance???

What if I stand on the other side of the room? Maybe from over there I can't gain the ability to teach people how to take a joke. yes.gif

Screw the metric system. It was hard enough learning to measure stuff the American way.

Lets review on whats wrong with what you said.

Metric system is not just european. I live 100 kilometres from the Saskatchewan border. Just think about what i'm getting at for a second or two.

I don't see why accepting new ideas is so bad. I watch some American T.V time to time (okay, just Family Guy) and i'm not complaining

Most of all: what the @#%$ are you talking about?!Yes, a km is kinda like your mile, just a little bit less. But you don't use a kilometre in COOKING! That makes no sense at all. They MAY have been saying litres, but not kilometres. Give us some credit. rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

America, if you want to keep to your old system, whatever; good for you. If you want to go to metric; same thing. It's not really that different. Changing to metric is not some kinda sick, twisted invasion. rolleyes.gif

I have friends abroad, I use metric when I talk to them. But its kind of confusing once in a while but not nearly as weird as if we used all the english measurements, I remember one time a friend and I attempted to figure out how many hands were in a furlong

Would you provide a reason. I`m just curious about all views on this issue over in the US.

I`m an Australian and we have had the metric system since before I was born so thats what I have been brought up with and taught during school. I`m probably biased though as its the only system I have experienced and used but I just find it so much simplier when I compare it to the US system. But then again I`m sure its the same for you guys and girls over there.
jesspy
I think it would be good if the US did switch then I would be able to understand docos and movies more. I mean I understand feet but the whole yards and miles thing loses me

Thats interesting. I thought i'll be the other way around. I'm a cabinet maker and millimeters gives you a far more accurate measurement. We're only allowed a 2mm error when making cabinets. If we were allowed 2/8 error, things will be all crooked. It'll be like Homer Simpson jobs
intrepid
The US is one of the few western countries that hasn't changed to the simplier, more logical system (that even it's own military uses). Metric is international used in science and it's about time the US got on board. And to those who say it's too complex - most people in metric countries can use both systems relatively easily.
BTW - Did you know that the system used in america is known as the Imperial System and was created by THE ENGLISH in 1824 (refined in 1959)?

A lot of them already know metric because they tinker and work on cars and trucks.
The good old girls would be the ones unfamiliar with using it much.
Michelle
Very true, Bella. thumbsup.gif

My husbands manufacturing company has a huge variety of people in the community from rednecks to hispanics to multimillion dollar companies and the military as customers. Since most of the production industry has been outsourced to other countries metrics is already being used basically everywhere.

Dowdy, while I know very skilled cabinet makers, they basically use our system because I guess it's comes more naturally. But, when it comes to the very intricate work they do go to metric for more accuracy.

tongue.gif So kiddos...those of you that are resisting may as well get over it because you'll learn it one way or the other.
distortedpandy
I actually use it everyday at work, in the medical field. yes.gif
The Silver Thong
Maybe this might help.

It would be very benificial to the U.S. to convert, it would save millions if not billions every yr in shipping conversions alone.

The only thing that messes with me is the temp. when I say it's 25 degree's C,
most south of the boarder think it's freaken freezing when actually it's very warm.

I voted no, simply because I prefer imperial.

But what is so confusing about Metric? It goes up in easy units:
1 tonne>1000 kilograms
1kg>1000 grams
1g>1000 milligrams.

Same goes for pretty much all other measurements aswell. Imperial is much more confusing, with 14 pounds in a stone, 12 inches in a foot etc.

England uses both Metric and Imperial.
ShadowDancer
I'm from Canada and I don't use metric. French Canadians use it more. English Canadians use imperial. Then again, maybe the younger ones do, in school I didn't learn metric.
All except for the temperature, I find it easier in metric.

it works both ways darling

Your assumption's are incorrect. By the way, don't call me darling. rolleyes.gif
Rykster
The metric system is far more logical and natural, once one learns it. It works with our counting system (base 10) and doesn't require learning or remembering a lot of "12 in. in a foot, 5280 ft in a mile" baloney.

I would rather use millimeters and meters than eith's of an inch and yards anytime.

If the US was metric, we would have saved at least one Mars probe that I can think of.

Anyone who thinks that the metric system is difficult was trying to "convert" everything to US measuring rather than learning to "think" in metric. Sort of like trying to speak French while converting everything to English and back. Just start thinking in metric and it works fine. I know that can be difficult in the US because we are currently trying to use both standards. That is what is confusing.
