Japanese newspaper reports PlayStation 3 delayed to November

Rob Fahey 19:01 14/03/2006

Six month delay caused by unresolved technical issues with Blu-Ray

One of Japan's leading newspapers, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, is reporting in its Wednesday morning edition that the PlayStation 3 console has been delayed to November due to unresolved issues with the Blu-Ray technology.

According to the paper, the problem lies with the copy protection system used by Blu-Ray, details of which have not yet been finalised - which will now cause a delay of some six months to Sony's PS3 plans.

Sony has always maintained that the PS3 will launch in spring of this year, but most industry commentators and third-party publishers are currently anticipating US and Japanese launches late in 2006, followed by a European launch in early 2007.

If the Japanese launch doesn't occur until November, that could put any hope of a US launch in 2006 in jeopardy - which would give rival Microsoft a second Christmas on the market before the arrival of PS3 in the US as well as in Europe, as well as giving Nintendo a head-start with the Revolution console.

The newspaper report comes just hours before Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi is due to address a conference audience of media, analysts and third party publishers in Tokyo, where he is expected to announce details of the firm's plans for the next-generation PS3 system.

However, it's not clear whether Nihon Keizai Shimbun is reporting on leaked details from this conference, or whether the report is based on information from other sources. Speculation that technical problems with Blu-Ray could delay the roll-out of PS3 has been rife for well over a month, and has not been quelled by the announcement that Blu-Ray movie players will ship in North America in mid-May.

Sony's conference is planned for 3pm in Tokyo on Wednesday - around 6am GMT - and is also expected to feature a first look at some of the launch line-up for the console.

Well its no real suprise there was no way they were going to get a spring launch, but lets wait for the conference tomorrow.

The 360 is going to make a killing now amongst those who can't wait any longer.

Not only is the 360 a more powerful console (FACT. Don't peddle statistics here, because I've looked at those specs more than anyone), but in the time it takes to ship the PS3 it'll have an ultra impressive library of games. Let's be fair, the library is pretty impressive right now and we've not even started the second wave.

Releasing the PS3 after Christmas could well eliminate them from the console war. No joke! A console war lasts, generally three years after the first system launches. The rule of thumb is, whoever has shipped the most consoles win, with little emphasis being put on money or games - Both are considored included.

Anyhow, if they don't launch til past Christmas, Microsoft could quite realisticly achieve more than 8 million sales. In fact I don't think it would surprise anyone if they reached 12, a figure which many news sites are predicting.

Futher more we need to considor the release of Halo 3, and how this will effect sales. I'm really not kidding when I say if Halo 3 is released tactically just prior to the PS3, not only would PS3 sales be seriously dented, but the some half-a-million Gamers waiting for Halo 3 before they buy a 360 will immediatley hike to their local store, giving Microsoft the boost they need to cope well with any PS3 launch damages.

Bad move, PS3.

It’s a sales gimmick!

New consoles are never on time, and when they come out, there will be a huge shortage! It’s all to get publicity. Would it get into the news if it was:

“News Update: Sony has managed, for once, to produce a game console on time, and produce enough to meet the demand!” Of course not.

You are dreaming there Walken although I give you full marks for supporting your gaming console. The already existing fanbase of Playstation fans is far greater than the other two consoles combined. That alone already gives Sony such an advantage that the others will have their work seriously cut out for them just to make inroads into their lead. Sony will produce more units and sell more units its inevitable unless disaster strikes Sony.

This is not taking anything away from the 360 which I`m sure will sell just fine but this delay of release for Sony will not eliminate it from the console race. Now hopefully Nintendo take full advantage of this opportunity to release before the PS3.

I could wait for a PS3. Darn it! I just went out and bought a PS2! angry.gif

Maybe this is Nintendo's big chance to get back into the war and take back some lost ground stolen by Sony & Microsoft. I have plenty of good thoughts about the PS3 and 360, but if I were to purchase a console, it would once again be a Nintendo. I guess I've had Nintendo just too long to let it go, although if the Revolution fails, I personally will be tempted to buy one of the others.

On a side note, the Revolution controller looks amazing, and I think it has both of these consoles beat in the possibility area. Who wouldn't want to hold their controller like a sword and fight through hordes of enemies by actually swinging something around?

The PS3 has been released! And they changed the system design! lol laugh.gif

lmao!

Well.... I honestly think the Rev has a chance this time.
I actually want it to come out third, so when all of the people can't wait, they make silly choices and buy the available stuff...

Then I get a Revolution and throw it in their faces! grin2.gif
Nintendo attack!

The Rev is the cheapest, the most innovative, and (probably) the most versatile.
And it has pretty much the same amount of power as the PS3 and the 360...

It's say it's the best buy.

lol! Although I am personally a Nintendo "fanboy" I must inform you that both the PS3 and X360 easily eclipse the power of the revolution. The Revolution will be around 2-3 more times powerful than the gamecube. Nintendo have stated time after time that this console isn`t about increased power and improved graphics. It is about creating new, and innovative ways to play games that not only everyone can play but also afford.
If you want to read up about the specs of the Revolution or read about Rev news go to the Revolution news thread just stared by Byuu94!
