Nothing
Before sliced bread, there was nothing. Sliced bread is the very cornerstone of our society. It is the air we breath, the water we drink, the bread (duh) we eat.
Or something like that

What was the best thing before sliced bread?
Fresh baked bread that's still slightly warm from the oven, with enough butter to leave teethmarks when bitten into...

PS Did you know that sliced bread is excellent for cleaning paper (writing paper, wallpaper etc.)?? just put a smallish lump (not the crust) on the palm of your hand and roll it into a ball, then use as an eraser to clean paper.. Best ever use for sliced bread...
Also, cheap crappy margerine is very good for cleaning your hands if you've been working on engines (car, bike etc.) The emulsifiers in the marge break down the oil and grease making it easy to wash off with soap!!! Try it, it works

Well, apparently, bread was first harnest by the ancient egyptians somewhere between 8,000 and 5,000 years ago, naturally there is no way to prove when it was created, and by whom. However, one can safely assume that one did not hoard all of the bread to himself, and that merely weeks, or even days, after bread became common, a method of dividing it was devised. So, knowing the earliest possible creation date of around 5,000 bc, I'd say the best thing since sliced bread was the advent of writing, developed sometime between 6,000 and 5,000 bc.

Thought and the human ability to ask the questions "Why", "How", "When", and "Where", then perpetually apply it to real-life situations in order to cause change or advancement. In fact, this still is the best thing before and after sliced bread, although I admit I would have a difficult time living without those convenient loaves of WONDER BREAD.

The greatest inventions of all time are, in order, rocks, pointy sticks, fire, sliced bread, and the slinky.
To date, science has not yet solved the question of why the slinky is greater than, say, indoor plumbing, but they're pretty sure it's true.

EDIT: Fixed a typo.

The slinky doesn't compare to rubber though^^

Remember that rubber keeps people from "producing" other people. I know it's wierd, but bread no matter what or how hungry isn't like a slinky compared to rubber.

Gotta love it
