The Simpsons, already the longest running animated series ever, is also the longest running prime-time series on the air. It will now survive through an 18th and 19th season, hitting its 400th episode in May 2007.
King of the Hill will also be firing up the barbecue for one more season on Fox. The show about the beer-swilling propane salesman Hank Hill and his family, has survived 11 seasons.
King of the Hill, co-created by Greg Daniels and Mike Judge, is said to have maintained its ratings.
The Simpsons has won multiple Emmys for writing and best animated series, and become part of the cultural landscape.
Creator Matt Groening has said he will keep it going as long as it can keep surprising viewers.
It certainly seems to have succeeded — scandalizing the Christian right by including a lesbian character and sending up American political and family life in countless brilliant ways.
The show's principal voice cast, which includes Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith and Hank Azaria, are all said to be locked in for the duration of the new pact. They had threatened to strike two years ago if they didn't get better terms.
