Well, Oblivion has finally been released for the Xbox 360 and PC, and in the few short days it has been out for it has already created a massive rift in the gaming community.

It's obviously part of the Elder Scrolls series which has had a few successful hits, most notably Morrowind. The game takes places in Cyrodiil, the capital province of Tamriel; which has become vulnerable to attack from demons, your mission is to kill them, seal the gates which are allowing the demons to flow in from Oblivion and to find the heir to the throne of the kingdom.

That, however; is just a part of it. The game has a groundbreaking new A.I. system (dubbed the Radiant A.I. System), which completely brings to life every NPC of the kingdom at an amazing level, here's a few stories (taken from posts at TeamXbox):
QUOTE

I was in a weapons shop. Decided to pull out my sword and start hitting stuff off the table. The tip of the sword hit the shopkeeper. She pulls out a mace and charges. I run outside, she follows. When we get outside there is a guard about 20ft away. As we are running she swings at me, hits him. He pulls out his bow and starts chasing her. Soon 4 other bow guards join in.

They get a couple of shots in and she really starts running trying to get away. She's running, 5 guards are trailing her in a single file line, with me trying to watch. Eventually they corner her at the side of a building and form a circle and start UNLOADING on her. Pulling their bows back really far and just nailing the crap out of her. This goes on for a good 20 seconds. All you hear is "thwack" dozens of times. She gives a final yell and down goes down. She looks like porcipine with all the arrows sticking out of her. As I start to loot the body, one of the guards puts away his bow, calmly looks at me, and says "Good day" laugh.gif

QUOTE
In the Imperial City, go to the docks, and you will see a pirate ship docked. If you get close to the ship and the first mate sees you, she will approach you and warn you not to get close to her ship, or she will run you through. Naturally, I took this as a challenge.

So I walked back until I was in the shadows and she quit paying attention to me. After a minute or so, her and one of the crew members got into an argument about getting some food. It was settled when one of the crew members finally said something like "Fine, I'll go get some food!" (Not exact words)

That seemed to make everyone happy, and the one that said it walked off. I stayed in the shadows waiting, and sure enough, after a couple more minutes the crew member came back. When he came back, all the other crew members and the first mate gathered around the one with the food. So I took the opportunity to sneak by them and get onto their ship. Went through the whole thing and looted what was decent (surprisingly little, although the Captain's chest had a few decent gems).

The whole looting process didn't take too long, so I figured they were still busy eating, and snuck back out. Of course, they had finished eating, and were just as surprised to see me coming out of their hold as I was to see them standing on the deck of the ship. Being that there were 5 of them and only one of me, I immediately summoned a headless zombie to keep them busy and ran like hell.

The zombie distracted 3 of them, but 2 were still chasing me. I ran towards the center of the city, where I knew there were guards. The guards saw the pirates chasing me, and started shooting the pirates with arrows, who imediately started attacking the guards in return. With me helping, the guards wasted no time in slaughtering the pirates, who I promptly looted.

The guards were a bit ticked off about the attack, and talked to each other about going on patrol. I followed them on their route, and they went right to the pirate ship. The 3 pirates who had been distracted by my zombie earlier saw me, and started attacking me. The two guards saw this, and started attacking the pirates. After the fight was over, only one guard and myself were left. So I got to loot the other 3 pirate boides, and one guard.

There are many different variations apart from the A.I. behaviour, aswell. Each time you create a new game file, the world around you will be randomly generated, meaning every player will have a unique environment to explore. There's also a full weather system, one minute it might be nice and sunny, then all of a sudden you'll see a streak of lightning, hear a slow rumble of thunder in the distance and the rain will begin to pour.

You also have lots of different guilds to join, depending on how you act in the game, you might decide to go on a murderous rampage every now and then, where you will be invited to the Dark Brotherhood guild, or if you're a thief you will be invited to the Thieves guild (as long as you're careful enough to not get caught by the guards, in which case you'll be attacked and thrown in to jail).

So; has anyone got this game yet?
jobot37
Two of my friends just got it, and I'm expecting to recieve a copy later next week, absolutely amazing, I've always been an Elder Scrolls fan and this is a fitting sequel to Morrowind. I like the new factions, and the sheer size of the map is insane! I've been playing Morrowind a LONG time and still haven't been everywhere.

I got this game the day it came out. it is so awesome the graphics and all the detail are amazing since I work long hours i haven't gotten far and I still have to put in time to play call of duty 2 since the patch just came out but oblivion is truly an awesome game.
Paranoid Android
Haven't got it yet. I'm gonna buy it when I buy my Xbox360 - probably 12 months or so from now......
Dando Kast
I got it the first day.... the game is awesome, it's just too bad I don't have a HDTV yet... it's pretty freaky when your in the woods and you heart 'ka thump' 'ka thump' ka thump' 'ka thump' and the you see a troll making it's way down the hill at you.. and jumping off high heights actually makes me feel like I'm falling....all in all I give it a 20 out of 10 original.gif
Starr Destin Mathews
I haven't seen a troll yet but those little things under the castle they were pretty scarey. So I am a high elf knightblade born under the lady sign what is everyone else?

Currently I'm a lvl 10 Breton Ranger (custom class). Specializing in marksmanship and destruction magic.... the trolls weren't that bad.... the ogres though... they were something....

Just got the game yesterday.
I'm at level 5, I made a custom 'Adventurer' class, under the thief.

By the way, some people have been having a problem where the game slows down a lot and it takes a good few minutes to load areas or even to swing a sword or what ever. If it happens to you, reset the Xbox and while it is loading up, hold down 'A' tunil you see the Bethesda logo pop up, and the problem should be fixed.

Can you explain why that would work?.... sounds just like 'holding back while waiting for a game in Halo 2 will give you host' sorta statement.... mine has a frame rate issues... and it froze once I think.....but hopefully they can fix that with an update.... and I'm level 14 since last night original.gif
Raptor
Oblivion uses a cache to store important information from the game, (that's why normally the first time you load an area it takes a while to load, but the next time it's much faster), but just like a normal computer, the information can become fragmented which slows everything down drastically; so holding down 'A' while the game loads resets the cache.

I'm pretty sure the information came from Bethesda, I'll try and find a link.
jobot37
Or you could just copy the entire game to the massive HD in your modded X-box........ grin2.gif

Cool, I'll give that a try if it happens to me again thumbsup.gif .... by the way.... level 16 (or 17) now original.gif
Raptor
Nice, at the moment I'm only level 6; I've been doing more exploring than anything else. grin2.gif

How far have you got in the arena? I've been playing around there quite a bit, but I can not beat the second guy at all, every time I get close he just heals him self. blush.gif
Dando Kast
I haven't touched the Arena actually....doing more of the Mage Guild at the moment and discovering things in the world, what animals have you come across in you journeys?.... I think as you level up certain creatures appear more freqeuntly. Last night I was playing and it was about 10:00pm game time and I was walking towards the Covolia district...can't think of the city name... anyways... I was coming down a hill and seen two faint whitish objects... thinking it's two bandits whereing Mithril armour.... once it gets closer and into the light I see a huge minotaur bearing down on me.... I backed up almost the whole way back shoooting arrows and fireballs at him... took awhile but I got him...

have any of you made any enchanted items yet??

Oops eh original.gif.... did you find your horse or buy him?.... I've found one that didn't belong to a guard just sitting there and when I ride him he doesn't walk away when I dismount.... seems pretty loyal to me, but I haven't seen a guard yet.... so who knows.
Starr Destin Mathews
i found one
KingTomis
Ohh wow, please stop. Making me jelous.

Cant get the game now because I'll sit and play all day and never finish this semester with decent grades.

Hod good of a PC do you need to run it though? Or are you all on the 360?
jobot37
My friends got it on PC, as long as you can run Morrowind well you should be fine, it seems that Oblivion has a tendency to be choppy for a while when you first get ti thought, it just takes a bit of tweaking
Dando Kast
I have it on the 360... most computers can hanlde it if you put the settings low enough....but it sorta defeats part of the purpose...

i found one

Did you find yours at the door to the Imperial City?...that's where mine was....but alas I did not keep him as I didn't want to take the chance of going to jail....again original.gif...

yeah I did actually and I just hopped on him and rode off I think you might be meant to find the horse or maybe you just have to wait for the guard to go away or something no one stopped me or said anything so I took the horse.
Dando Kast
I think if they don't see you get on the horse you should be fine... but one time I was riding a horse and talked to a guard while mounted.... the guard was normal...but after I got back off the horse then hopped back up he ran and arrested me w00t.gif

Man, I am always late on stuff. Always. I just now started playing Morrowind. I didn't think I would like the game so I never bought it. But Wal-Mart had it on sale at $10.00 so I figured...why not give it a shot?

Now I've fallen in love with that game and have to pull myself away from it begrudgingly after a couple of hours of play. I don't want to get that addicted.

Anyway, I'm betting the majority in this thread have played Morrowind, as well as the expansions (which I haven't gotten yet).

How does this new game measure up to Elder Scrolls III? I'm already reading reports that it blows everything else out of the water, but you can never tell who's writing the reviews. There are a LOT of gaming companies that employ people to do just that.

I'd like to hear it from actual players as to how they rate this game.

Scale of 1-10?
jobot37
Feed your Morrowind addiction, my son. Let it be the teacher and you the student. (mystical)

Morrowind would be a 8....Oblivion would be a 10....they brought back some elements from the 1st and 2nd Elder Scrolls games.... and the fighting system is so much better....as well as the lock picking..more of a mini game now. There both great games though.....

Yeah, guards only seem to realise that the horse is stolen while you mount/dismount it.

I haven't been able to play the game for the past few days, In the first two days that I had it I played it almost non-stop, I would have ended up getting addicted to it, hmm.gif .

Truthorder, I have to say that Oblivion gets a 10/10; I'm yet to find a single fault with it.

So have any of the Elder Scroll newbs learned how the complicated level system works?....if your having a hard time leveling up then let me know and I'll help yah out....

Hmmmmm.....Anyone here got their armour all steel and is a Brawler in the Arena and The Journeyman of the Fighters Guild?

BTW, I am Lv6 at the moment, I picked GOOOOD primary skills wink2.gif

Also, I have a silver shortsword for a bit o' ghost-hunting!
Raptor
When I got this game, I decided that I would play it straight; no killing of NPC's unless it was necessary, and only a slight bit of thievery if I was desperate; but today after I finally bought my own little shack (Imperial City Waterfront), I went to sleep on my bed, and awoke to see a guy standing there in full camoflage; from the Dark Brotherhood guild.

I don't know why he was there, as far as I know the only person I killed, was the Gray Prince in the arena, that must have been the reason.

Well, I gave in. Now I'm an assassin for the Dark Brotherhood guild, I've already advanced a couple of ranks. I regret the killing of so many NPC's...but the rewards are too great to stop. grin2.gif

I have all mithril armour (my light profieciency is at 76 I believe, so it doesn't encumber while wearing).... I'm in the Mages guild right now.... and have done 3 out of 6 recommendations.... I primarily use some destruction magic and my bow and arrow (I have silver arrows for ghosts)... I really need to get a capture card so I can show you guys my stats screens... I'm a level 18 right now I think...

You guys know how to get the +5, +1, etc. beside your skills when you level up?.... if not then I'll explain it....

Well, my candy butt is still primarily kicked by Black_Ops, but now Lv8, Warrior Of The Arena. Oh, and I wipe out any old foo' with my Hand Of Ice (Nordic Frost)

And Black_Ops is right, get to a high level before attempting to go to Kvatch, trust me, it's BAAAAADDDDD news if you go there any less than Lv7 wink2.gif

Even at lvl 22 it's a little hard... more monsters attack you when you enter. I started doing the Arena last night and am now a Warrior of the Arena... little easy at my lvl though (and with my ring of retribution I just let them hit me and they die anyways, it does 8% reflect damage to them....found it real early in the game in a cave). I got my markmanship up to 50...now I can zoom with my bow, it's frickin' sweet....and once you get acrobatics up to 50 you can roll to the sides or front and do backflips original.gif
Raptor
I finished Kvatch at level 5/6; there is a level scaling system, which means that lots of the monsters are normally around an equal level to you.

Yup, the higher your level the better the monsters...my brother in law went in at lvl one and fought scamps.....borrrriiiiiinnngggg.... at lvl 15 I went into oblivion and was fighting flame atronarchs and Daedroths.... now they were fun to slaughter devil.gif
Dando Kast
I was wondering, what view do you guys use?.... 1st or 3rd?
Raptor
Oh right, that's cool. I didn't know that there were different monsters depending on your level, I thought that there strength attributes just changed as you grew stronger.

I use 1st person basically all the time, the only time I use 3rd person is when I'm riding a horse.

Black Ops, I just got what you meant about the levelling system, with the +1, +2 etc. Can you explain how to get them? thumbsup.gif
Nadal
Level 11 Wood Elf Agent, Ex-Vampires. Champion of the Arena, Listener (Leader) of the Black Hand. White Stallion Knight, Sister of the Blood (Vampire slayers) The new Gray Fox. Belong to the Fighters and Mages guild. However, I got kicked out of MAges guild for a quest I did for the Theives guild and now I have to retreive a impossible amount of 20 Daedra hearts and 20 Vampire Dust. I'm also a Champion of Cyrodill after sending the Obilivion gates out of the realm and saving the world.
Dando Kast
Black Ops, I just got what you meant about the levelling system, with the +1, +2 etc. Can you explain how to get them?

For sure. You all know that in order to level up you must have 10 levels gained in your major skills for that level, now.... what about the minor skill you say?... they dont' lean towards a level up but I always lvl up many minor skill for this reason. Every skill has a governing attribute (strength, speed, endurance, etc.) When you level up your major skill you gain a +1 beside the governing attribute, when you level up a minor skill 3 times it also gives you a +1.... here's an example(this is my characters majors skills):

Athletics > went up twice (speed)
Blade > went up once (strength)
Destruction > went up once (will power)
Restoration > went up once (will power)
Marksmanship >went up twice (agility)
Acrobatics > went up twice (speed)
Light Armor > went up once (speed)

So if I were to level up based on this I would have these choices:

Speed +5
Agility +2
strength +1
will power +2

Now depending on what minor skill you level up you can gain some more plusses beside the attribute and not worry about gaining a lvl while your trying to get your +'s up.

Does this help?
Raptor
lol, that's quite a few achievements, Nadal.

Thanks, Black Ops; great explanation. thumbsup.gif

I just got the Skeleton Key (An unbreakable lockpick with +40 security); it's extremely easy to get and great to have.
If anyone wants one, Fast travel to Leyawiin and make your way to the Mages guild (you don't have to be a member), and speak to Alves Uvenim. She'll tell you the location of a Daedra shrine. Go to the shrine and activate it, you'll be given a quest to find an 'Eye of Nocturnal'. The cave is located just above the letter 'B' in words 'Topal Bay' on the map. Head over to there and you'll find the Tidewater Cave. When you're in there, take the first left and than another left at the turning point, and you should come across the Eye. Return to the shrine and you'll have the Skeleton Key, it shouldn't take any longer than about 10 minutes.

Time to thieve. grin2.gif

No prob. By the way I'm level 24...Associate of the Mages guild and Gladiator of the Arena... closed my first gate last night..... at lvl 22 you shoulda seen what I was fighting....

laugh.gif How the hell?

I've never been to jail, I save very often, and if I get caught I just load. There's not much use for it apart from the face it's just easier to do it that way to stay in the fighters/mages guild.
Moose-Of-Armageddon
Wow, god Nadal, are you some sort of machine or something?

I'm now a Gladiator of the Arena, and a guy with a great big Silver Longsword wink2.gif At Lv10

LOL, I feel real confident, I know people are kicking my butt to Hammerfell and back XD

And that Skeleton Key, it seems interesting. I have Security as one of my major skills even though i'm not a thief in any way and general consider myself the 'Knight in shiny armour with the whopping great sword and the blond Nord hair' character. I just found I was damn good at picking Very Easy chests in ther Imperial sewers, so I assigned it. Now I use lockpicks to unlock special doors and display cases in Fighter's Guilds. But mine keep breaking. I'll have a look at the Skeleton Key.

And yep, never been in jail. Only paid 1 or 2 fines for some trespassing thumbsup.gif

Should we be saying *spoiler* if were telling how to do something in the game?.....

So I was playing last night and came across two more gates just out in the world... closed one. My highlight though was really silly... I was in the mages guild and accidentally took out my sword and swung....there was a table right in front with plates and things on it... I see the blade go sideways....take the plate out fron underneath everything else and go flying.....nothing else budged grin2.gif .... I treid to do again but couldn't.... every other time I hit all the cups and food too....

....and lvl 27 right now....
