I agree - why such a wide shot with the group (which would normally be in the center of the photo if they were the subject of the photo) way off to the right? It's as if it was deliberately shot to include the figure, posed off to the left. My guess is that it's added in, maybe clipped from elsewhere in Photoshop, cut and pasted in, and the pixels blended in with the scenery really well. It wouldn't be too hard to fake something like this, if one had time and patience to spend on the retouching. Now if this was a 35mm or 110 film shot with a negative on hand, I'd have to reconsider my opinion. Also, living in the Southeast U.S. and married to a Civil War nut, I can tell you that the uniform is NOT Civil War era. My husband thinks it looks like a costume from present-day. He agrees with the guy who said it was a re-enactor on a smoke break.
