A bunch of new info was released about the Revolution today, and more will come during the next month leading up to the big unveiling at E3.

QUOTE
Insiders stress that Revolution runs on an extension of the Gekko and Flipper architectures that powered GameCube, which is why studios who worked on GCN will have no problem making the transition to the new machine, they say. IBM’s “Broadway” CPU is clocked at 729MHz, according to updated Nintendo documentation. By comparison, GameCube’s Gekko CPU ran at 485MHz. The original Xbox’s CPU was clocked at 733MHz. Meanwhile, Xbox 360 runs three symmetrical cores at 3.2GHz.

Revolution’s ATI-provided “Hollywood” GPU clocks in at 243MHz. By comparison, GameCube’s GPU ran at 162MHz, while the GPU on the original Xbox was clocked at 233MHz. Sources we spoke with suggest that it is unlikely the GPU will feature any added shader features, as has been speculated.

“The ‘Hollywood’ is a large-scale integrated chip that includes the GPU, DSP, I/O bridge and 3MBs of texture memory,” a studio source told us.

The overall system memory numbers we reported last December have not greatly fluctuated, but new clarifications have surfaced. Revolution will operate using 24MBs of “main” 1T-SRAM. It will additionally boast 64MBs of “external” 1T-SRAM. That brings the total number of system RAM up to 88MBs, not including the 3MB texture buffer on the GPU. By comparison, GameCube featured 40MBs of RAM not counting the GPU’s on-board 3MBs. The original Xbox included 64MBs total RAM. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 operate on 512MBs of RAM.

It is not known if the 14MBs of extra D-RAM we reported on last December are in the current Revolution specifications.

Lots of numbers, but what do they all mean? The short answer is that Revolution is exactly as Nintendo has publicly stated: a console whose primary focus is not quadrupling raw horsepower, but rather a potentially gameplay-changing new controller. Nintendo’s new hardware supports this innovative new peripheral and not the other way around. Looking back, it makes sense.

Sources close to Nintendo have, however, told IGN Revolution that the company was experimenting with in-development GameCube controllers very similar to Revolution’s freestyle-style unit. The problem research and development faced at the time was that these controllers encountered unavoidable latency issues, which made them nearly incompatible with fast-paced software. Apparently the Big N overcame this particular hurdle.

This may be bad news, but IGN has a habbit of trying to make the Rev sound bad. Considering that the Cube was actually weaker than the Xbox yet looked similar graphically, this sorta proves the 2-3 times thing to be true. If you feel that this is bad news continue reading.

A Gamasutra interview with Bioware and Pandemic

QUOTE
GS: Is either company making a Revolution game right now?

JR: We’re enthralled with the platform just as much as we are with the 360 and PS3. Each of them have very different strengths that our games are going to play to. But we haven’t announced any commitments yet.

GS: Do you perceive difficulties with the Revolution, as far as making games multi-platform?

JR: Well the Revolution is a very different platform, and we’ve actually just seen some things behind closed doors that are just mind-blowing. Very very exciting. They’re doing something that’s very different and unique. I agree that it’s going to challenge the notion of just doing a port.

I don’t think it’s going to be as easy to take a product from one console to the Revolution, and so I think we are going to be looking to see how we can tailor our products to that platform. But we do that also with other platforms as well, it’s just that the Revolution may challenge us even more.

Matt Casamassina from IGN also said that we will see screenshots and footage of Rev games in April.

^Well Nintendo always told us that they were not concentrating on just upgrading hardware. Gamecube graphics were very good and 2-3 time that will make me happy enough as long as this controller is trully as good as everyone says it is and that rev games are of a high quality.

Comments made by Nintendo Exec hints at possibility of external hard drive for next-gen gaming console

With new game consoles there is always a concern with the pricing of the systems and games themselves and with the announcement of Nintendo porting older NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 games for their to distribute electronically have raised some new questions, specifically about where/how the games will be stored if they exceed the gaming console's onboard flash memory size.

In an interview of Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata tells CNN/Money that the new console will be more affordable than the other next-gen consoles such as the XBOX 360 and Sony's PS3 and games Nintendo develops will follow the same plan. Though 3rd party developers may ask for more money per copy of game, Nintendo will not charge above the standard $50 price point for games developed in-house in order to gain customer loyalty.

The other topic brought up during the interview was the concern over storage space provided by the console and how 512MB of flash memory would be sufficient to store updates and even the older Nintendo, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx 16 games which Nintendo is planning to offer for download through their online service.

Iwata mentioned that the console will feature SD memory card slots for virtually unlimited storage but also pointed out that the console will feature USB ports and hinted that they would not be limited to input devices but may, in fact, support other types of storage devices as well.

Iwata said there would be more announcements made regarding the "Revolution" during E3 2006 in a few weeks.

Sqaure Enix, this means Final Fantasy something for the Rev.
Ok maybe i'm getting ahead of myself but i hope so.

lol.. I hope Square Enix ditch Sony (I know, it won't happen), and go full out FF for Gamecube.

I hate all the Final Fantasies after 6, but damn.. that would be hilarious...

Crystal Chronicles was confirmed for the Rev a long time ago. There's also going to be a DS version, and they might be able to link to each other. They'll probably have it at E3 in some form, and if not there they'll have it at their annual SquareParty.
I kinda hope they mix things up a little for CC. The game felt limited, and I hope they think up lots of neat things to do with the new controller.

As for other SquareEnix games on Rev, I don't know. They say that they're going to "support" it, but they said that for the Gamecube too and only put out CC. The prez of SquareEnix has become interested in the innovation of the Rev and DS, so it is possible that there'll be more games around this time.

Violent Sword Game on Revolution March 31, 2006

by: Phillip Levin

EXCLUSIVE: Sources tell AMN about an exclusive first-person game featuring swordplay and more.

Sources within Nintendo of Europe have confirmed for AMN that an un-named company will reveal a wholly exclusive action game involving swordplay, action and violence in the coming days to weeks for Nintendo Revolution.

We were told this project would feature themes including blood, violence and swordplay.

While the source AMN talked with was unable to reveal anything more, through talking to a number of other sources within the industry, we’ve learned that Ubisoft is currently developing an exclusive Revolution first-person shooter codenamed “Katana” for Revolution. This first-person game combines shooting elements with swordplay ones, according to sources. What’s more, it’s incredibly violent and adult-themed.

Readers should definitely note that we’ve been unable to confirm whether these two projects are related.

And now for something completely different, happy trees.

Soon, you too will be able to make Happy Trees alongside the painting legend.

It may seem like an early April Fool's joke, but PGC has confirmed the announcement with both the developer, AGFRAG, and the late Bob Ross's production company. Keep in mind that the platforms are not finalized because the game does not yet have a publisher, but details of the publishing agreement and target platforms are expected at E3 in May.

In Production - Bob Ross Video Game

Bob Ross Inc. has announced in March 2006 that they have filed a letter of intent to license to Joseph Hatcher's AGFRAG Entertainment Group to develop exclusively worldwide video/computer games based on Bob Ross' creative, unique and easy to learn painting techniques and TV show properties.

The Bob Ross video game, currently untitled, is planned to be developed for PC, the Nintendo DS handheld & on Nintendo's next-gen system coming later this year, code named Revolution. Release date was not announced. AGFRAG is currently seeking a publisher.

AGFRAG's Director of Development, Joseph Hatcher, has this to say about the announcement:

"I grew up watching Bob Ross on PBS and was always in awe of how quickly and smoothly he made these beautiful paintings, which helped inspire my creativity. There are generations that know Bob Ross and his painting techniques, and I want to share his talent with future generations in a new medium.

Nintendo Revolution Now Called "Nintendo nplay"
by Ian Mikutel (03/31/06)

In a recent press release on the official Nintendo Web site, the company revealed the final name of their next-generation console, code-named "Revolution".

The press release stated that the name "Nintendo nplay reflects the company's strategy to bring all gamers and non-gamers back to the starting line. The console will offer something for everyone from first-time gamers, seasoned fans, people who have not traditionally played video games and those who have strayed from gaming."

These comments are in line with statements from Nintendo executives over the past year regarding the company's intention to produce the first truly mainstream console.

Readers might note the connection between the 'n' in "nintendo" and the 'l' in "play"; a shape similar to the Revolution controller is formed. The technique bears a faint resemblence to the Nintendo DS logo.

Revolution Report has confirmed the new name with Nintendo. It will be integrated with our site design and database over the next few days.

Stay tuned to nplay Report for further developments on Nintendo's forray into the next generation of gaming.

RevolutionReport has a news story up saying that the Revolution has been renamed the Nintendo Nplay.

RevolutionReport says that this information was announced via a recent press release. They even provide a link to the press release, but the link turns up with an error.

I have more then enough reason to believe this story is 100% April Fools. First off, the address that the press release directs you to DOES take you to the Nintendo Press Room, but the entirety of the link does not match the rest of the links on the site. Second, I have full access to the Nintendo Press Room, and I cannot find any announcement on the site at all. Third, I am automatically emailed any new press releases that Nintendo puts out, and I have not received any email confirmation of this. As far as I am concerned, this is just another April Fools joke…but you never know. I am beginning to not like April Fools day at all!

It was a joke by RevolutionReport, not Nintendo. However, Nplay isn't nearly as bad as some other rumoured names (Nexus, N5, RS, etc.) Also, it does go along with the Nintendo Forums because they are called Nsider.

^Yup sounds about right. When I first found it I thought it sounded rather fishy considering the date and where the link takes you.It is better than Nintendo GO though.

Well its only 38 days until E3 so hopefully we will find out either before then or during the conference.
Neo2005
there will be more speculation about things then hard facts, we will probably have to wait for E3 for the facts to come out.
mindfray
I think nintendo will pull though, what the game industry needs now is inovation. Not just the same old game recycled in a pretty new wrapper. The classics were jus that because they were innovative for thier time, somthing new and fresh to thrill our minds.

Think of doom ? and wolfenstein 3d classics, if it were not for them smash hits like quake 4 or half life 2 would not have came to be.

Freedom of gameplay through inovation is the way. While just another board game with new differantly shaped peices will bite the dust.
Neo2005
^Really good point.
But on the same coin nintendo has and always will make games that look and sounds rediculous just to try out new venues of technology.
Thing is those gaes usually make it big.
Look at Meteos or that brain trainer game for the DS, huge mega hits.

Nintendo is confident that once the Revolution is revealed at next month's E3, people are going to understand why the company has been quiet.

I`m sorry to post something like this that just states the bloody obvious, but if Nintendo does not deliever on these supposed surprises there will be millions of Nintendo Fanboys out for blood! w00t.gif

Nintendo News | Red Steel Revolution Scans
Just Point, and Shoot

By Jorge Ba-oh (jb)

Did you ever try to act like a cool and sophisticated action hero in arcade light-gun shooters? Embarrassed? Now you can in your living room, thanks to the interactive plastic remote that is Nintendo Revolution controller.

In high profile magazine Game Informer, news recently broke that one of the Revolution's launch titles will be the innovative shooting game from Ubisoft, Red Steel.

Red Steel is a Revolution exclusive shooter, that's said to fully utilise the controller for an experience that is truly next generation in gaming. In development from the creative minds of Ubisoft Paris, the team has an extensive portfolio - from Prince of Persia to Far Cry and Splinter Cell.

Courtesy of a user on a blogging website, Endangered Gamer, we have a selection of scans with some very, very nice conceptual artwork of the game.

Heres a link to the artwork which apparently mirror the ingame graphics as well as some updates on the game itself.

Red Steel Preview!

Industry on Red alert as Ubi Soft look to Steel headlines...

By James Temperton [ tempo88 :: Sub Editor :: Head of PR ]

Red Steel has been in development since shortly after E3 2005. It is developed by Ubi Soft under close supervision of Nintendo. The idea originally surfaced during a meeting between Ubi Paris and Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto, when the European developer pitched the idea straight to Nintendo. They were immediately taken by the striking idea placed before them and signed Ubi soft up to develop it exclusively for the Revolution. Fast-forward a year until now...
Red Steel follows the protagonist, a young American who is engaged to a Japanese woman by the name Myu. On the night you are supposed to meet Myu's father for the first time, she is kidnapped by a ruthless Yazuka faction led by a guy called Tokai. In between all this madness you find out that Myu's father (Sato) is also a Yazuka boss in possession of a very important (very sharp) Katana sword. Myu's kidnappers hope to trade her life for daddy's big sword and when he refuses all hell breaks lose. Sato is mortally wounded in an attempt to steal the sword and decides to pass it on to you, before dying. This leaves little old you, all alone, with no training and not a clue what is happening against the notorious (and angry) Japanese Yazuka. Time to kick some major derrière...

The game is all about style, precision and fun. It ranges from downright violent to subtle and intricate, as it makes full use of the possibilities made available thanks to the Revolution controller. At the start of the game you will be able to be far more brutal and trigger happy, using machine guns to blast the living daylights out of your enemies. Eventually you will have to take enemies out with one, clean, crisp, glorious headshot. The game is a full on FPS title, you navigate around in full 3D by manipulating the Revolution controller (imagine using a mouse that you hold in the air), your turning circle and slight of movement is therefore much more akin to the sharp control of PC FPS titles, rather than the often quite cumbersome controls of console games in the genre.

Red Steel is not all about killing though, it is also about skill. Simply blowing off the heads of everyone you see will win you no friends, so it may be more beneficial to shoot an enemies gun from his hands. Be defeating someone and still sparing their life, you will gain his respect and assistance in your mission. Enemies might surrender their guns and their boss (who commands them in a certain area or jurisdiction) could even offer to help you through the level or section of the game to reward you for your honourable fighting. Respect and honour play a major role in this title. It is hugely important to get as many people on your side as possible during your progress through the game. Without their help, things will be very difficult when you come to face Tokai. Another reward for good fighting skills is the 'Freeze Shot' aspect. Do another fancy shooting and clever moves and you will 'freeze time', allowing you to pick off special shots as the world around you slows down; a bit like bullet time in essence. When the fighting heats up, so does the music, the more hits you land the more frantic things get as the game becomes more and more intense. Thanks to the Revolution's unique controller interface, this becomes a hugely immersive experience.

The most intriguing (and potentially fun) aspect of the game comes in the shape of a long, sharp and rather awesome looking sword. Although the majority of the game will be focused around gun on gun combat, at times it will be necessary for you to wield your rather large Katana for instant stealth kills. To wield the sword, all you have to do is swing the Revolution controller in front of you and move in for the kill. You can also use a number of special attacks, for example by tracing an X shape in the air, you will unleash a devastating attack on your enemies. To stop yourself from flailing about like a combo-crazed madman, you simply have to stop moving the controller, allowing you to opt out of a move that opens you to enemy attacks.
There are two mentors to teach you during the game, one will train you in gun combat and the other in sword combat. Once again respect will play a role here, if you don't show respect towards those who teach you, they will bugger off before you can say 'Katana'. You can signal answers to questions and requests by nodding, this is done by moving the controller around at the right times. These sections of the game are not run in cut scenes, so if you get bored of listening you can walk away, but be wary of facing the wrath of people you annoy; apparently there will be more detailed interactional elements displayed at E3. You can hone your skills during training sessions before implementing them in the main game itself, so there should be no excuse for accidentally chopping a potential allies head off with a flailing Katana.

Thanks to the Revolution controller, aiming with precision on both horizontal and vertical axis is easily doable. You can look up, down, left and right very quickly, meaning that movement is far more lifelike and accurate. For the first time ever, the controller does not limit your movements, it is your own ability to react and shift your arms/fingers that will see you succeed in this title. Essentially, you aim and shoot as fast as you can physically move to do so. Aiming is done with the main controller and movement is worked by using the nun-chuck/analogue extension. You fire weapons with the trigged on the underside of the controller, so everything is nice and intuitive. You can also hurl and roll grenades, this is done by moving the controller in the appropriate way (a throwing motion to throw, a rolling motion to roll).

The AI in the game is also said to be hugely impressive. As we mentioned earlier, there is a hierarchy amongst most the characters in the game, and they all act accordingly. Expect enemies to go flying out of the way, ducking diving and working as a team to take you down. They will also react and interact to reflect the environment around them. If you reload, they will pop out from hiding places and try to take advantage of you when you are at your weakest; just like you they want to survive and will do whatever it takes to ensure they stop you before you stop them. If you’re stupid enough hide behind a table and cower without making any attempt to attack, enemies will jump over it and shoot you before you know what’s hit you...

The multiplayer aspect is shrouded in mystery. We know it exists, but we don’t yet know how it will work. There will certainly be a traditional death match mode, but full details wont be revealed until E3; expect it to support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as well. As a nice little bit of information, split screen action will not affect how big your movements can get. If you want to fling your arms around like a whirling dervish you can. Despise the decreased screen size, the amount you can move doesn’t change. Expect it to be a hugely amusing and fun multiplayer experience.

Nintendo promises 20 Revolution games at launch
Biggest-ever haul of launch software to bolster next-gen console

Matt Chapman, vnunet.com 12 Apr 2006

Nintendo will provide its next-generation Revolution console with 20 titles at launch, according to a statement from its vice president George Harrison.

Speaking in the latest edition of Game Informer magazine, Harrison said that Nintendo had learned from past mistakes with the Gamecube.

"The other thing we recognised is that you really make your reputation in the first year," he said.

"You've got to deliver software, not just at launch but in the first six to nine months after launch and it has to be solid software. In Gamecube, we didn't have that."

Harrison also hinted that the Revolution console, which has lower specs than the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, would sell for less than its competitors.

"Our goal is to come in at a slightly more mass market price," he said.

Nintendo Revolution Goes Black And White - 16.4.06

Being unique and pushing the envelope doesn’t always mean coming up with a new idea. Sometimes it’s a matter of revisiting something old with an eye toward making it a little different.

That seems to be the thinking behind game developer Nibris’ plans for a Nintendo Revolution title. The game called Sadness will be done in black and white instead of the eye-bursting full color of most of today’s games.

Nibris has decided to follow Nintendo's path, which definitely fights the stagnation that has occurred in video games, and creates new trends," said Piotr Orlowski of Nibris games. … "With this move, we want to create a unique environment, which is only available in Sadness," Orlowski said.

For fans of old movies and television, this idea will sound hot. It’s retro in a good way. Black and white images when crisp and clear have the power to burn themselves into people’s memory in a way color rarely can match. Think of some of the most famous images in history and it’s likely the black and white shots are the ones that stand out – the flag raising at Iwo Jima, the Victory Kiss on the streets of New York.

Set in a pre-World War era, Sadness looks like it will be a title to check out. We’ll keep you informed of more news about it as we hear it.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the revolution is going to sell a lot better in Japan then it will in America.
AztecInca
^Well at first that will most definately be the case you would think as the Japanese market is most definately dominated by Sony and Nintendo, the X-box barely makes a blip on the radar over there. The Gamecube wasn`t as far behind the x-box in the US as many seem to believe anyway.

It will come down to whether or not the revolution with its secrets, innovations and downloads system meets expectations. If it does and becomes more than just a gimmick console it will most definately have massive sales everywhere. Its cheaper price for the actual console and at least Nintendo games will make it far more accessible, older fans who played and loved all the old Nintendo and Sega games may be drawn back to play them as well as the Indie games that many will be interested in. Then of course there is the new controller and the other secrets of the revolution that have yet to be disclosed by Nintendo that will most definately interest people. Oh, we must not also forget all the massively popular Nintendo franchises such as Mario, Metriod Prime, Donkey Kong, SSB, Zelda etc.......
Byuu94
Just by the amount of interest and developers onboard already, I can tell that it will do better than the Gamecube. I mean that there are third party companies that are already working on exclusive revolution games, whereas the 'cube only had one at launch. (Rougue Leader) It's really just a question of how much better. Revolution will sell more in Japan than here, because that has been the case with nearly every Nintendo console.

Nintendo Revolution News | Hudson To Show Game At E3
Is it bird? Is it a plane? Probably the latter...

By Mike Mason (Mason)

Hudson Entertainment, developers of Bomberman and the Mario Party series, has offered a sneak peek at a Nintendo Revolution project. The information appeared in a pre-E3 press release, previewing some of the things that will be on show. There was little else to do with Nintendo contained in the press release.

The project is being tentatively called "Flight Game", and Hudson claim that you'll be able to "take to the skies in a way never before experienced on any home console". The motion sensitivity of the Revolution controller is used to give players complete control of the plane as they pilot their way through acrobatic flight maneuvers, including sky artistry and bomb drops.

This is all that is known for now, but it could be speculated that this is describing a new version of Pilotwings, since Hudson are a trusted partner of Nintendo. It may also be an update of old Hudson game 'Dog Fighter'.

According to some reports, SquareEnix will have "high profile" games for the Revolution at E3. This could mean that they are planning titles other than Crystal Chronicles for the system, or that the new FF:CC will be a bigger game than the last one.

I want a Mana game! thumbsup.gif

This sounds good to me also. yes.gif

Sounds cool. I rented the first one and liked it, but it certainly wasn't easy.

Revolution News | Presenting the 'Nintendo Wii'
It is here at long last...

By Adam Riley (jesusraz)

Nintendo's UK publicists Cake have today sent us a very interesting video clip and blurb on what is apparently the final name for the codename Revolution. And here is the cryptic message:

Introducing … Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

The Nintendo Wii video clip and logo can be seen through this link, I would post them as well but my Internet has not been working properly for the last week and a half.

AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Wow, that has to be the biggest mistake ever made in naming a console. Those PR guys must've had a REALLY good party. Wii think they might've had a Wii bit too much to drink.

Too easy. Way too easy.

Well an euthanism for Urine is a perfectly acceptable name for a console, I think.

Bah - They should've sticked with the Rev.

OH MY GOD! Well, now wii can be sure that nintendo screwed it big this time!
I think wii are shocked and not content with this name!

I actually liked the name. Besides being a bit of an oxymoron, it did have a nice ring to it. Ah well, all good things must come to a punful end. Wii are not pleased at all.
