While this is a news story, it seemed to fit here given the question of the effectiveness of prayer has come up here a few times.

Power of prayer overrated?
MALCOLM RITTER

Associated Press

New York — Does praying for a sick person's recovery do any good?

In the largest scientific test of its kind, heart surgery patients showed no benefit when strangers prayed for their recovery.

And patients who knew they were being prayed for had a slightly higher rate of complications. Doctors could only guess why.

Several scientists questioned the concept of the study.

The researchers emphasized that their $2.4-million study could not address whether God exists or answers prayers made on another's behalf. The study could look only for an effect from the specific prayers offered as part of the research, they said.

The study “did not move us forward or backward” in understanding the effects of prayer, said Dr. Charles Bethea, a co-author and cardiologist at the Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. “Intercessory prayer under our restricted format had a neutral effect.”

Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School, co-principal investigator of the study, agreed. “We cannot come to a conclusion, except to say that by this study design, with its limitations, this is what we found,” he said.

Researchers also said they didn't know why patients who knew they were being prayed for had a higher rate of complications than patients who only knew that such prayers were a possibility.

Maybe they became anxious given the knowledge they'd been selected for prayers, Dr. Bethea said: “Did the patients think, 'I am so sick that they had to call in the prayer team?”'

The researchers said family and friends shouldn't be discouraged from telling a patient about their plans to pray for a good recovery. The study only focused on prayers by strangers, they said.

It's the largest and best-designed study ever to test the medical effects of intercessory prayers — praying on behalf of someone else.

The study followed about 1,800 patients at six medical centres. It was financed by the Templeton Foundation, which supports research into science and religion, and one of the participating hospitals. It will appear in Tuesday's issue of the American Heart Journal.

The research team tested the effect of having three Christian groups pray for particular patients, starting the night before surgery and continuing for two weeks. The volunteers prayed for “a successful surgery with a quick, healthy recovery and no complications” for specific patients — their identities known only by first name and first initial of the last name.

The patients, meanwhile, were split into three groups of about 600 apiece: those who knew they were being prayed for, those who were prayed for but only knew it was a possibility, and those who weren't prayed for but were told it was a possibility.

The researchers didn't ask patients or their families and friends to alter any plans they had for prayer, saying such a step would have been unethical and impractical.

The study looked for any complications within 30 days of the surgery. Results showed no effect of prayer on complication-free recovery. But 59 per cent of the patients who knew they were being prayed for developed a complication, versus 52 per cent of those who were told it was just a possibility.

What do you mean by prayer? Wait, let me guess - asking God for something. What about just simply talking to God, discussing your day, thanking Him. Prayer doesn't have to be specifically asking God to help us with something.

That aside though, when I pray at night, one of the things I pray for is people in the world who are sick or injured or hurting. I know I am not the only person that does this. So, however you look at it, everyone is being prayed for in some manner or form, even those that don't know it.

Just a thought.

Hyper To me prayer is just a form of thought control IMO focusing your intentions on something, harnessing the creative energy of thoughts , of course there are those that build little fables around this or disassociate , pretending they are having conversations with diety ( when its really themselves)n,some give names build historys , but its just thought control....anyhoo i see no harm in holding good thoughts for others its just a matter of perspective i suppose.Just my 2 cents...lol

I've met people that say praying is when you speak to god, meditation is when you listen to what he has to say.

Then I've seen American Atheists bumper stickers that read; "Praying Is Begging!"

When I think of prayer I think of how powerful it is to find a quite place inside ones self and set their mind to that which troubles them while at the same time imagining they shall overcome. So as one prays one focuses their desire for that answer onto the picture of that real life thing they believe they need prayer for.

The mind is an incredibly powerful being in it's own right. When my sister-in-law was a child she was stricken with scarlet fever. The doctors were at a loss and the family was afraid she would die, so they asked for a prayer circle to attend their families need at home or in Chapel one day, because all else was providing no hope their daughter would live through the rest of the week.

All these people came to the house and circled the little girls bed, holding hands, in prayer, while others at the church did the same. I don't know how long this went on, but it was hours through the night.
The next day she was alert and had an appetite. The day after that, she was bright as rain and to look at her one would have never imagined her state just two days before.

I know from my experience that one can imagine things to life, if they will it so. I think that's what prayer is. The exercise of creative visualization of the will. And when many come together for a purpose and create together, the potential of answered prayer is alive through the will of so many minds and hearts, focused on the question are also giving life to the answer, because it is the faith/understanding there is one, that I think creates one.

52% versus 59% could easily be a stastical variation, indicating no difference.

All in all its a hilarious article a great find, who would think they would actually do a study on prayer and well eveyone can read lol
Something Like Laughter
one would need more info than is provided in the article in order to make a judgement on the study.
as the saying goes, statistics dont lie, but liars use statistics.

The power of prayer is to me more individual- if something is of Gods will it will happen...sometimes miracles happen and sometimes tragedies occur...Theres not much we can do to control things beyond our power- we cant control weather or nature - death is a natural aspect of life and no amount of prayer is going to change that...Prayer may help- sometimes but its not the answer or the solution to a problem.

Thank God for un-answered prayers. Sometimes prayers are unanswered for a reason.

I'm happy with my life right now, and with my current girlfriend. I can only thank God for not answering a prayer I made a long time ago, asking to keep me and my old girlfriend together. If he would have done that, I'd still be stuck in an unhealthy relationship.

I'm sure some prayers are not answered for a reason.

I think one thing that was flawed in the study was the fact that it was strangers that were praying. As IM stated in her post, it was the family and many very close to the family that were praying. So I would say the largest factor to praying doing any effect is Love. Love is the most powerful emotion on Earth. With love and the deepest desires of one's existence all focused on one thing, you could probably set the universe into motion to act.

But I do also believe that prayer should be more directed to yourself rather than a higher being. And what could be a better time to pray other than when you are meditating or preparing to do so. All answer will come from within, whether you believe a higher being sent the answer to you, or understand that it was your self that gave you that answer. And the key emotion that should be involved whether praying or meditating is always love.

If you would to share, how was it that your last girlfriend relationship came to an end? (Did you leave first/forever, did she?)

It doesn't seem clear to me.....

blue you agreed so is this a common occurance with your 'god' to be vague about which prayers get answered or its not up to you??? You aren't living your own life?????????
This brings in the Free will question for me now....

No, we often times give something in our lives to God to handle because we need guidance on which is the wise choice to make. I had dated a girl for about 6 months. After 2 months of dating her, she flipped and started playing all these games and putting on all these shows. The truth is she didn't know what she wanted and I did. I wanted to love her and she thought love was overrated. So after so many months of arguing, I decided that it wasn't wise to stick with her. However, I had prayed constantly that God help us in our relationship, but it only got worse. About 6 months after we broke up, I met another girl that was perfect for me and I was perfect for her. We dated 5 months before we got married and we have been married for 4 months. If I had decided to stick it through and hope that she would have changed, I could have been very miserable. So, had God answered my prayer and helped my exgf and me in our relationship, I would not have met my wife and had done the awesome things we've done together.

PA I can't believe I am doing this..this post I am about to make may go down in Berri history LOL but I 100% agree with you grin2.gif

If you put your heart into your prayers and even talk to God like he was a real person and show respect and that you truly mean it...your prayers will be answered...I am a STRONG believer in that...........so are prayers over rated.........in one word NO make that two wrods - HECK NO

Another thing...when praying to God...you should agree to meet him half way...and dont make your prayers always sound like mere wishes

The 4 types of Prayer darling are:

A -Adoration

C-Confession

T- Thanksgiving

S- Suplication.

Yay this is what I discussed with my girls at church the other night. LOL

But yes you may say prayer is overated- but wouldn't you say worry is also?

If we worry all the time wouldn't that be just as bad as relying soley on prayer. LOL

Let me just say sometimes I pray just so I don't worry as much.

I very rarely pray, even though I think I'll start to do it more after reading the article. blink.gif ohmy.gif grin2.gif

I think prayer only works if you have faith that the prayer will be actually answered, and even then, prayers still go unanswered. Life is not meant to be perfect like a heaven on earth.

If you look at it from another perspective, you could think of it as mind over matter.

The one prayer that does work is to simply ask for Jesus. When you are in the spiritual realm, and being annoyed by other dark spirits simply ask for protection in the name of Jesus, and he will come like the avatar under my screen name. Don't believe me now, but if the time arises, you can thank me.

Here's a good story I want to pass on to everyone dealing with the dangers of dealing with the other side. I have heard many similar first hand experiences. Even if you consider this story made up, there are many others out there.

Please read it

Adoration - worship, giving glory to God, praising God.....

Confession - confessing our sins. The times we haven't done what God wishes, the times we have treated other people wrong. We tell God about them. Pray that we stop doing those things in the future.

Thanksgiving - Thankfulness for things we have. Family, friends, life, events, teachings, anything that affects our lives, we thank God for.

Supplication - Asking God for his help (people who are sick for example). There are infinite things we can ask for, though for obvious reasons God isn't going to give us everything we ask for.

There's a reason supplication is at the end of this list (besides that the acronym wouldn't work otherwise tongue.gif ). Yet when praying many people ignore the first three and jump right to the end.

Confession - when we confess we ask God to help guide us so that we try and not do the same again...when I say try I mean God knows all we can do is try and keep trying and he will guide us...that's my version....this is why I feel better telling God myself instead of confessing to a priest

I thank him for my family, friends and health and most of all I thank him for Becky

Supplication...PA asking God for help is right but you MUST also agree to meet God half way...this does work best.....you cant just think God will do all you have to play your part too yes.gif

This has been A Berri update....the only Berri that is a believer LOL grin2.gif
