Full Version: An Updated Bible

Hey everyone i read mainly from non believers that the main reason they dont believe in the Bible is how "old fashioned" it is and how it simply cant apply to people living in todays age. Now i have a question- if the Church decided to tell the world "Okay...we are keeping Gods original message in the Bible but updating it for the new generation" would you agree with this? Would you find the Bible more believable? More on our level?

I think it'd be interesting if Church officials said they are going to modify the Bible and make some changes to it...By changes i mean a guy CAN have long hair- A woman IS clean after her periods- God LOVES homosexuals etc. etc...

Would you be in support of this updated Bible and would you think it would spring up the numbers in Christianity again? If so why- if not...why not!

Also to already Believers in the Bible do you think this would officially "alter" God original word and message to his people ? How would you react to such news.

A contemporary version wouldn't quite fit, imo. However they do have numerous modern translations to fit the bill you speak of.
For instance the classic King James Version (KJV)John 3:16. "For god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that...."

And this new version: John 3:16 (Worldwide English (New Testament))
Worldwide English (New Testament) (WE)

John3:16 God loved the world so very, very much that he gave his only Son. Because he did that, everyone who believes in him will not lose his life, but will live for ever.

I've seen versions like that IF, and I think that the book loses some of its 'flavor'. It is similiar to reading Shakespear written in modern slang..........

If the questions is "Would I accept the book if it was revised to fit modern times?" I would still have to say no. Simply because the message of the book does not sit well with me, and also because it would change the entire 'theme' of the book.

It is like asking "Would you agree with "Mein Kampf" if it was changed to say that the Jews were not the problem.........

(Please note that the reference to 'Mein Kampf' IN NO WAY should indicate that I agree with the author or his views)

I assume you are talking a major change in philosophy. Taking out references to the killing of witches, racism (the story of Cain), beating or killing disobedent children, women being subservent to men, the proper way to treat you slaves, tossing NBers in a lake of fire, killing of NBers in war, etc.... It is going to be a short read. thumbsup.gif

Well think about it:

The OT was written with rules of behavior for the tribes. "Keep the Sabbath holy", meaning that no work could be performed on the holy day. So to update that, would you say "Keep holy the Sabbath day, except for Police, fire and Medical personnel, and those guys who work for DHL, UPS, and the Post Office"???

How about the prohibitons on unclean animals? What classification would a Big Mac fall into? Especially since it mixes dairy and meat in one convenient helping.

So basically thus far most people disagree with a modernised Bible. I'd still like more direct responses, especially with the "whys".... cause i hear a lot of non believers say the Bible is simply too old fashioned for this new age- but i mean if we leave most of the stories- but clear out or edit some of the "rules" (outside of the 10 commandments) then more people might buy into the Bible or into "God".

My personal opinion is that a modern Bible still might not cut it for many people and i think many believers would be offended by the thought of changing Gods word or message...I also disagree with the "theme" of the Bible being changed if its edited in this way...If the main way of obeying God is the 10 commandments- then most other things arent really the "theme" of the Bible.

I just think people see the book as too harsh and a more lenient version would appeal to a wider audience....maybe..

modernizing it would not change anything to me.

like all books of myths, "read it", "learn the lessons", "put it aside".

To me it is silly to live by the book, or any book. Why not worship and build your life around the works of Hans Christian Anderson or The Brothers Grimm? It would be the same fanaticism to me.

We all live by group agreements to laws based upion morality and ethics. Each person must do there part in living by the agreements or there is chaos and the destruction of civilizations.

Each person having their own personal beliefs and philosophies is good, but each community, nation, and civilization must all have one agreed upon and lived by their members or they will cease to exist.

Hi Ramster!

The following is just my thoughts; I think the updated version is already within and always has been. The living bible is us....the other bible is just a book of other men's thoughts of past. I believe we are own bibles. If we decide to walk in love than we do and everything else falls away. If we decide to let our egos rule than we create the negative of love, prejudice, jealousy, evil, war, intolerance, hate, etc....

If you 'need an outside guide and any outside guide of merit will point you to your inner truth ( anyways), not anothers ....I say look within its not rocket science, put aside crutches and fairy tales, horror storys and meet yourself you have what you need , a tree doesn't need to be told how to grow how to be a part of nature neither do we its inherent natural....Just my Two cents....

i suppose that would sum up my position. the problem is that most people dont know enough about the bible and the world it was written in to get a decently clear picture of what is going on.
of course there is a solution to this, learn stuff. thumbsup.gif
correct stuff of course.
