Okay, I swear I'm not trying to be funny. This is an honest question. How would have stegosauruses have mated? They have those spikes...

I'd imagine they'd have some sort of "protection", not for the genitals, but little latex covers for the spikes to keep the male from getting himself impaled.
Sold of course, at Planned Dino Parenthood.

It would be like how elephants mate...With looong genitals or from an angle.

Um, they didnt. Thats why they all died? And thats why animals no longer have spikes on their backs? Just guessing.

The Stegosaurids (Stegosaurus, Kentrosaurus, Dravidosaurus) Lived for more than 20 Million years...They MUST of mated.
Echidnas, porcupines all have spines. Stegosaurs did mate, but they did it ackwardly like I said in previous posts. If they didn't mate, then they wouldn't of evolved...

I would say that no matter how much your physiology tells you you cannot mate... you find a way. I know I would.

actually the female had a extra bone or some sort of muscle that tendon that allowed them to rise their tail higher than any usual animal could. So if you see my point, but I do imagine that the male kind of hurted the female. or if you have split theories they could lay on thier sides.

How abt this?
The male Stegosaurus flipped the female over the side, then have it his way on top of her...
More likely not to get impaled that way...

While I'm sure the experts here will inform me that dinosaurs reproduced sexually, I'm not sure this is know with any certainty. I think they believe that these creatures had an opening that emitted eggs, sperm, feces, urine, whatever. However, it's possible the reproduced asexual eggs as some creatures do today or that the eggs were fertilized by the male after the eggs were laid. Stop thinking like a mammal. Dinosaurs were not mammals and in did not have sex like mammals.

Most of the animals that reproduce "outside of the body" live underwater. It's not very practical on land, except in the case of plants. By the way, this is still called sexual reproduction. Even most plants reproduce sexually. Anytime there is sperm and egg, it's sexual reproduction regardless of whether the male and female ever meet. The only time an animal reproduces asexually is if they split into two or lay eggs that hatch without sperm, like those lizards that are able to clone themselves.
I'm sure stegos mated the way any other large land animal does: the male mounted the female from the rear, probably for only a few seconds or a minute. In the case of this animal he probably stood slightly to one side of her to avoid her plates. He may even have had a prehensile penis like that of the elephant.

Mammals are not the only animals to reproduce sexually with internal fertilisation, all sharks and rays have sexual reproduction, reptiles and birds do two a few species of teleost fish also reproduce internally as do a few species of amphibian. Dinosaurs had eggs with a solid shell, this rules out external fertilisation instantly because the shell has to be produced internally. Don't think it is something unique to mammals.

Paleontologist Ken Carpenter believes it was done house-cat style. The female squatted on her forelegs, raising her rear end and pushing her tail to one side, exposing her cloaca(the common opening in reptiles through which the intestinal, urinary, and reproductive tracts empty). The male mounted from behind and to the other side, supporting himself with his front legs on her back, possibly with one rear leg held off the ground to permit a closer conjunction of the organs.

well when a man steggy and a woman steggy decided they love eachother and get married and then buy a house they call the baby store and have one delivered. thats how they mate

I've heard that when a Stegosaurus is in defensive-mode their spiked armor flattens over their backs. Maybe they flatten when the male mounts. But then there's the tail to bypass...
A silly thought...what if the female lies on her back and the male mounts from that position?

Pelvic orientation is wrong for that, plus she has plates down her back too. Probably lifted her anterior up and male approached at an angle, that would be the simplist method.
