I tried to pull this off on the "Spirituality versus Scepticism" forum and noone bought it, even with a few people "shilling" for me. I made it up, and it's not true, but what if?

QUOTE
2500 years ago, shortly before his own death, Shakyamuni Buddha, also know by his birth name of Siddharta Gautama, prophecised, depending on which branch of Buddhism one studies, that the next Buddha, the Maitreya Buddha, would fulfill one hundred and eight different and specific "features" as to his birth. A few years ago, a miraculous child named Chotin, which means "Dharma", was born in Nepal to a family of Tibetan ancestry, an extremely gifted boy (Anyone see the movie "the Golden Child"? It was based partially on this real kid! - edit-I must have misquoted the article I read, as the movie came out in 1986, not long before Chotin was born. Thanks for correcting me, Esan!), who fulfilled each and every one of the prophecies. Delegations of virtually every know religious organization tested the child. Apparently, he is not a fraud, and no-one has been able to disprove his powers. Even the late Pope John Paul II visited the child, and he spent time in Washington D.C. with President George W. Bush, who declared that the child was "a good kid, certainly not a demon or anything like that". Bush allegedly accompanied Chotin to a baseball game, where the Child caught a homerun fly ball. Billy Graham met with the Child Maitreya and told reporters that his Parkinson's Disease symptoms were "at least a little partially relieved". He also stated that the Child could not be the antichrist, as he acknowledged Jesus as well as the Buddha, Moses, Mohammed, and many other religious founders and did not claim to be Jesus reborn. The Head Rabbi of London was touched by the child and cured of rheumatoid arthritis. Thousands of people of all faiths have visited him in the eleven years of his life so far. I don't have the links, but he was featured in the New York Times recently and the London Observer, as well as Time Magazine. Chotin, now a pre-teen, lives in Nebraska and shuns most publicity. He speaks over fifty languages, has an i.q. of 250, and has read the bible, the lotus sutra, the Gita, the Koran, the Babylonian Talmud, and most ancient sacred texts, in their original languages. He is a Chess Master, and his knowledge of astro-physics astounded Stephen Hawkins and Carl Sagan. John Edward met him and states that Chotin is in "constant contact with the spirit world." His mother, Jangmu ("the purified") has always been, and remains, his chief spokesman and publicist. Many have compared Jangmu to the Virgin Mary, Kali, and Kuan Yin. According to Jangmu, her son "at the same time honors all religions and saints, and is not, repeat not, founding a new religion". Any opinions? What if Chotin can be irrefutably proven to be the Maitreya Buddha? Any thoughts?

C'mon, imagine!

Wait, what part did you make up? Is Chotin not a real person?

I made the whole thing up to see what you guys would say. I went to a tibetan name website to pick realistic names for the kid and his mom. There have been similiar cases, but not, I hope, as contrived as my little fable.

I am not sure what you are asking. If this hypothetical child was the new Buddha, then it would be a huge boon to Buddhism, wouldn't it? For that matter, if someone could be definitively proven to be Jesus Christ reborn, it would be a huge boon to Christianity. And if aliens started parking their flying saucers on the White House lawn, that would be strong proof of the existance of aliens. As long as we're dealing with hypotheticals, then I would like to be granted the ability to fly and melt things with my mind. Also, I'd like a raise.

I don't see how a conversation or debate is intended to be generated by this. You appear to be asking, in essense, what if Buddhism were the one true faith. Well, if Buddhism was proven to be the one true faith, then people would convert to Buddhism (except, of course, for the 10% or so of fanatics who will never convert no matter what).

If, on the other hand, you are asking what if a boy like this really existed, then some people would believe on faith, some would doubt on faith, and the skeptics would demand proof. Again, there isn't much of a conversation there.

I suppose it would be helpful if you clarified exactly what you are asking us.

He beat Bobby Fisher, okay? It was a hoax. Anyway, the chile in my little tale honored all religions, not just Buddhism. I would give almost anything to meet someone like this.

That is why this section is named "Ancient Mysteries & Alternative History".

Thanks, I guess. I figured Nebraska might be a good choice, as most of don't live there (low pop.). The baseball idea I got from the cap the kid is wearing at the end of "Golden Child".
