Hey everyone, i'm just popping in to ask for some help. as the title itself explains, i am a scriptwriter, and i want to see my movies made. However, as a mere want to make the movie doesn't get it done without some capitol to pay for the endeavour, i turned to the canadian arts council. seemed only logical really. problem is, the arts council requires the applicant to be either experienced in film, or at the least acknowledged by the community as someone who is a good candidate. furthermore, they state that the grant is not available to undergrad students (which i myself am) therefore i come to the UM forum, asking if anyone knows of any other grants that i have yet to exhaust. i have done numerous searches on google and the like, yet mostly i only end up reaching dead ends. Thank you for your time.
(BTW, i put this in the writers and artists forum, because my scripts aren't actually filmed yet, so they didn't seem to fit in the movies forum.)

Well...it wouldn't exactly be honest, but you could claim that a dying little boy asked you to make a movie for him...and this is the movie, right here! or if that fails you could expand the one little boy to an entire orphanage...which has recently burned down....
I really just wanted to use "It's for the children" as an excuse for something, but now oyu have also given me reason to think on my own statement, it doesn't really make sense, does it? no, no it doesn't...so anyone may accept either of these posts to mean whatever they like

Hey, why not, it sounds like a reason valid enough to tug at a few heart strings...unless they ask to like...meet the dying young child...or the orphanage...still though, you at least thought of an angle i hadn't tried yet, which is all i'd asked. thanks!

I would suggest trying to sell your script to a film company or publisher rather than trying to produce it yourself. Or get an agent that specializes in screen-plays and let them find a film company.
I don't know much about Canada, but arts grants are very difficult to get (as you have already seen!)

It's actually the worst idea I've ever heard. Honestly, "It's for the children." Claiming that a horde of dieing kids demanded you make said movie might get it written, but it won't get you everywhere. Besides, even if it did, would you honestly have wanted to suck-seed that way?

well, it's not the greatest idea i've ever heard, ill admit, but it gets point for originality. and since few other suggestions were made, it is the second best one heard yet. unless you've got any suggestions? btw purplos, your idea takes first prize for the time being. i have to consider it though, not sure i want to give up my control over it right now...i would rather do it myself, but if push came to shove, i'd give it a try

Yay! First prize.

If your screenplay is good enough, and you are able to get an agent excited about it, you can negotiate to hold onto creative control.
Just curious, are these 'hollywood' type scripts or documentaries or what?

to say hollywood, makes them sound like the usual nowadays campy hollywood kinda writing. i like to think of it more like a serious independent film script. twisted and kinda off centred, though not a documentary. your idea has great potential, all i have to do is get ahold of an agent...which could be difficult, but if it means i get to keep control over my precious....i can do it. thanks all.

Check out www.agentquery.com and www.aar-online.org. They are very good resources for finding agents for writing. I'm sure you can do a search for screenplay or script agents on both of them. And remember, NY agents are the best.

I am totally OK with originality points, plus, I hope everyone inferred that my suggestion was VERY tongue-in-cheek....
