There is a point to this story it is paranormal just read original.gif

Okay first some background about my cat Blaze. He was a stray of sorts - one day he showed up at my doorstep and made himself at home! I had another "friend" for him at the time named Lucky (a completely different story) and Lucky later disappeared and now I only have Blaze.

Blaze is about 2-3 years old black and white (he has a streak across his head hence the name). He is in all honesty a very cute cat. He is also very wild! He lives up to his name - he gallops (at full speed) through our house when he is bored (winter usually). He hides and attacks every chance he gets! I don't think he ever runs out of energy!

The problem I am having is Blaze has started jumping on EVERYTHING. This includes my moms China cabinet with the China that could be broken, the piano (bigtime nono), the top of the fish aquarium. He walks across furniture to get where he wants to go - he won't walk on the floor unless we scold him and make him get down. He will jump at the slightest movement you make - especially when he walks on the floor. The other day I saw him pretty much huddle on the only patch that doesn't have carpet in our family room. This is so not like him!

So here is the question - does he just not like the texture of my floor anymore or what?! Is there something he is sencing that I am not (something paranormal)? Are there signs you look for in animals when they "see" something?

Earlier in the summer he got sick....he couldn't breathe! Eventually we found out he had asthma (yeah they can have that) and he has to get shots. My intial thought was that the shots are making him sensitive. But I called my vet and she said that wasn't a side effect. The vet has reccomended that I get a squirt gun to keep him off the furniture - I hate doing this but it's the only choice I got.

Comments suggestions?! Thanks! Love yuo guys!

First of all, has the cat been neutuered? If he is left unaltered that could warrant some strange behavior. Second, could his asthma been triggered by something in your carpet such as the material the carpet is made of or the glue used to hold the carpet down? When did his asthma start? Has anything major happened lately, ie. new boyfriend, new home, or anything along those lines?

As for the squirt bottle punishment, that's not a bad idea. I have one for my cat Trinity. When she is doing something I don't want her to I squirt her with some water and she stops what she's doing.

Also, cats don't like Eucalyptus, or maybe you could buy some double-sided tape to put in the places where the cat likes to jump. I can guarantee he won't like landing on that!

You also need to remember that he's not going to stop this behaviour overnight. It will take time and your patience. However, I don't think this has to do with anyting paranormal. thumbsup.gif

My cat is sixteen years old and still runs around jumping on stuff in the middle of the night. I think your cat is probably only as crazy as every other cat.

Depending on what breed the cat is determines how they behave. I had a full blooded Abby, remember the word HAD, and that particular breed are jumpers. They climb and jump on everything, thay have to be at the top point in any room. SO, it could just be who they are. Sometimes, people should get the pets that fit their particular lifestyle. Like, I have two dogs now, which do not jump on furniture.. hehehe, that drove me nuts. I have knives all over my house, some with tassles, and the damn cat would paw at them, until he knocked them down, and once almost hit Falcon in the head, when she was 18 months old. So, bye bye kitty. I paid 900.00 for him, and gave him away for free, because it was a good home.

One of the dogs I have now is a teacup Chiuaua, and he also has asthma. Some animals have that. It is sad to see them gasping for breathe... Good luck with that... And, just cat proof your house.

Hes jumping a lot and huddling on a spot that isnt carpered??? He may have a problem going on with his feet, claws getting too long, maybe injured himself while jumping around. Is he avoiding all carpeted areas??

Some "Indoor No" may help with keeping him off furniture you dont want him jumping on. It can be found at pet stores and Wal-Mart.

When my cat was a kitten it would use my bean bag in lieu of kitty litter trays.

Thanks everyone for your replies original.gif Blaze is a domestic shorthair - no specific breed and he is neutered. He avoids only the living room carpet he will walk on mine in my room. No major changes recently....the carpet has been here for about 4 years (before he was here). I think maybe he has a thing in general bout being in high spots - it's a security thing for them. Which is what made me think he saw soemthing I didn't.....anyway I feel guilty squirting him but I have no choice sad.gif I'm a good mommy but I sure can't dicipline!

cats are cats they are fluffy and i love them... they love to hover around yuor furniture because its' an instinct... they will crawl over it and will flirt with your things by squeezing their fluffy skin because for them, its a sign that it's their territory... and that they like it... its as if they were saying "this is mine" alien.gif

but its all right if you dont want them to do such things i would suggest you to do some other way but not the squirt bottle...imagine you were on your cats' shoe... and i you love him right so dont punish him that way... you can follow their suggestions right? alien.gif

Sabrina , instead of a deterant have you tried catnip on the carpet . Cats are very clever and as Starlyte pointed out he may have had a bad reaction to the carpet that caused his asthma he may rememeber it and associate the two . Try some catnip on the carpet you can get it at the vets or pet supplies and "Blaze" will love it . Also and just for the time being try putting his food bowl down on a piece of carpet to get him used to it again . Cats are funny things they have us trained before we even realise it and yet it seems allmost impossible to change the behavior of our cats. thumbsup.gif

You may be told that Valerian has a similar effect to Catnip. (This is true.) Many humans find the aroma of Valerian unpleasant. (It is important to remember this.) I discovered this when babysitting my little nephew. His new pet kitten had arrived a couple of days before, so I decided to experiment. My sister arrived home later to find a very content little kitten asleep on my lap. When my brother-in-law drove me home he sniffed and said, 'When was the last time you washed?' abduct.gif
