I've been watching waaay to many horrorflicks. I simply have a hard time getting that nice chill down my spine. So, i turn to you guys (and by all means, girls) to help me. Coz i really miss that feeling. (yeah i know, call me sick and get it over with wink2.gif )

Post your most horrifying stories, pics or whatever. Give me things to read that'll chill my bones.

Err,
If you are as jaded as you say, it is doubtful that we could scare you in the characters allotted. I suggest reading H. P. Lovecraft and keeping in mind the time period in which he wrote. Also, to a lesser degree, August Derleth... they are the last authors that gave me any sort of scare. If you haven't read him, prepare to be shocked at how many people have ripped off Lovecraft. You be familiar with enough of them, I'msure.

If you want a movie that does a reasonably good job of portraying his fiction, go for "In The Mouth of Madness" or more more closely "Dagon."

Though "Dagon" was not so good... disgust.gif

Possibly the kindest words I've ever heard anyone muster for that film.

I would steer well clear of cinema inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Virtually every film I can think of which was based upon his works has been terrible. I believe Douglas Millory, an ametuer film critic of sorts, put it best when he said "any given movie will most likely hurt bad when it tells us it was based on, inspired by, or ‘faithfully’ adapted from a story by : Edgar Alan Poe, Brahm Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, or (most recently) Michael Crichton."

(You can read Mr. Millory's review of the movie Sphere, from which that quote was taken, here: http://www.jabootu.com/sphere.htm)

However, I would agree that Lovecraft's stories are excellent. He was a true master of using the reader's imagination against them; the horrors he describes are eliptically refrenced, and one rarely has a firm sense of what they are facing. Of course, his stories have inspired a good deal of modern horror, and many will strike the modern reader as less than original.

Another thing about Lovecraft of which I am fond - and perhaps one reason why movies based on his works are so uniformly bad - is that he wrote in short stories. Perfect for a light read before bed.

Very true, Lovecraft does make excellent reading before bedtime. Unfortunately it was many years since i got a good scare out of them tho original.gif

I've seen Dagon, i remember having a big grin on my face when i found it, thinking i was up for a great night in front of the tv. but alas, it sucked...

Hi Garm

This thread would be better off on the Movies, Music, Books & Television Shows Board, so I have moved it here. You are more likely to get responses here as well. thumbsup.gif
