I was thinking, and I know this is a grim topic, but if a forum member here died, would anyone else know?

Think about it. There are some members who know eachother in real life, or contact eachother regularly. But if someone died, say got hit by a car tomorrow, how would we know? Would we find out in a week? A month? Ever?

I'm not so sure. I, myself don't have a consistent online relationship with anyone. Would anyone ever know for a fact what happened to me if I died? I don't think so. It could be assumed I'm moving or unable to access a computer. I could have joined a cult, gone on a long vacation, gotten locked up, went in for a medical procedure....any number of possibilities. I would assume that death would be the last belief, because no wants to consider death as a primary reason for a persons absence.

I know my parents wouldn't come here one day saying "Colorless died last week choking on a carrot."

Gee I dont know if we would know, unless we knew a member was really sick and had to leave the forum and someone sent an email to another UMer then that would be the only way

Did you know that there is a remberbance for those who have past away? I am nearly sure there is..I would hate to hear one of my friends have past away that I chat to on UM..I dont wanna think about it...... no.gif For those that have passed away that where once on UM..I never knew them but my heart goes out to them and their family

I think it might be a good idea to have a place to post it. My husband knows I am a member of this forum and I'm sure he would let everyone know if something happend to me. I think it would be important to know, even though it is a sad subject, I wouldn't want to wonder why another member hadn't posted lately. crying.gif

There always seems to be someone letting us know when a member has passed on. Just look in the remembrance thread. We'd most likely not have one of those unless someone had let us know what had gone down.
Walken
Generally someone close to the member informs us of a members passing. That said, such an event is so rare it's hard to tell whether thats what would happen. Thats a mixed-blessing, really.

I really don't think you guys would know if anything like that happened to me, none of my friends in real life hang out here, my family probably wouldn't do anything about it, they might alert a different forum I frequent but I doubt this one would come into the question.

HOWEVER, I am a healthy, strong young man currently, and am a very safe driver, and although I have been known to go on a lurking binge once in a while, I don't think I'll die anytime soon, so don't worry about me grin2.gif grin2.gif

*A random arrow flies through your window and impales you in the heart.* Gheeze. Never saw that coming.

i doubt anyone would know about it if i were to die.
and then of course, if a friend came on the forum and posted saying that i had died, all of the skeptics would be like "yeah, right. where's your evidence?" *giggle* good ole skeptics... you guys make life interesting here on UM
nativechick1989
There are just two of my family members that know I'm a member of this site and they aren't into computers. So, in the event that something should happen to me . . no one here would find out. But in the event that I should all at once 'disappear', that will be on my own and not because I 'kicked the bucket'.

Thats the downfall of being anynoumous I suppose. It brings the thought to mind though that it is a good reason to treat everyone on here with respect because you just never know if it is the last time you will talk with them, even though that sounds a bit grim.

Well, no-one knew where I was during my recent absense,

Not that anyone noticed...

So it would be very easy to have a member die, without anyone else knowing.

The sad fact is, that with more than 33,000 members, this has probably already happened.

This has been one of my online fears for the longest time, which is why I have codes for online friends that tell when something is wrong. If we're really close, then family will notify them via e-mail or the phone.

On my other boards I have friends that would let people know if I was dead or sick or whatever and although my friends/family know I am a member here I don't know if they'd think to notify you. I suppose I could ask them to, but in all honesty I doubt anyone would even notice I wasn't around anymore. I simply haven't been here long (or loudly) enough to warrant any recognition. If I were well-known I'd make sure someone was notified so they could tell everyone.
