Heard of this on the radio this mornning and thought I would look it up and yup,a new face.

It's not really that new. Those picture are seven years old.

There are some more recent and more detailed pictures of the "smilie face" in this post in the Exploration of Mars thread.

There has been so much new information from Mars in the last few years and so many new images that no one can be expected to know everything that's been released. For Mars buffs we really are living in exciting times.

I suspect that the radio story you heard picked up on this feature because of the new images released by the European Space Agency.
