well in all seriousness i see many religious people whose sense of humor is questionable at best. humor to me is good whether it's clean or "blue" . i just love a good dirty joke....lol

i know there is humor to be made from religion , but religion itself does not recognise humor ie. jesus didn't go around telling jokes about the romans or egyptians etc.

If you want a decent book on religious humor, I advise reading " Lamb ". It talks about the first 30 years of Jesus life with his first disciple named Biff ( Levi ). Biff is pretty much a comedian, and it tells how Jesus rose to the wise ranks he attained before his crucifixtion. The book itself has quite a bit of religious comedy and I loved it. Of course, I would take it with a grain of salt, it's not ment to bash christianity what so ever. So if your hurt, furious, or just down right disgusted with it, just lighten up.

something must be wrong with you then. i sometimes have to work at containing my laughter as i read some parts of the NT, especially when Jesus serves up a round of insults for his adversaries. and ive been told the story of the good samaritan was supposed to have the audience rolling. the irony is mostly lost to me, but i cant help but smile at the incredibly awkward situation that story would have created.
most people, including myself, have to be told the humor is there, but it is there.

How do you know that!? I watched a program on History channel the other day that spoke of the missing gospels (from the NT). And gnostic texts reveal a young Jesus that was a moody vicious brat! But of course that wouldn't read right in drafting a story about a perfect man, so they were not permitted in the canonization process. This doesn't mean some scribe didn't write them down, it means they were omitted from the bible because they didn't coincide with the image the early church was trying to cultivate to describe a savior. That's why instead we hear of JC's birth and then POOF , he's 30! laugh.gif
If a higher mortal authority decides we cant handle reading it all, how can we believe any of it is valid as anything but a story, when it has admittedly been edited to fit an agenda!?

Humor is a great antidote for life's trials and tribulations as my grandma used to say. I think I was blessed that although my family was the church going type there was never a lack of humor. Heck just seeing them at church in their pin striped suits was humor enough for me. it was like watching the Sopranos.

My daughter told me recently that she believes God must have a sense of humor. "After all Mommy just look at the Platypus." grin2.gif

And like you I like dirty jokes ( or have a tasteless sense of humor sometimes) at times but I try to be respectful and not offend others.

i think the premise of this thread has been missunderstood, and that's probably my fault for not explaining further about what i was meaning in my statement.jokes about various religious characters and beliefs are out there and it's funny, but humor is not in practice in the dogma of religion, ie. the scripture and such being serious and inflexible, preaching about goin to hell and people blowing themselves up to kill others. in my opinion too many people take religion way too seriously.
ramster83
Ah Vlad i see what you mean now...Well yeah taking ANYTHING too seriously isnt a good thing to be honest...Yet some people step too far...i mean when someone is an athiest then they cant be victims of religious ridiculing. Yet many times its the religious poking fun of other religions and some (Especially Islam) dont take it well...Yet you know what? They stand their ground...they dont let people walk all over their religion and leave their dirty footprints on it...I believe people can have a sense of humor but having a picture of the prophet with a bomb strapped to him is ignorant and insulting to the believers. I can get into it further but i have to run now.

Fundamentalism is variously described by various authors, but to me it really boils down to a rather simple test: In my view, a fundamentalist religion is a religion, any religion, that when confronted with a conflict between love, compassion and caring, and conformity to doctrine, will almost invariably choose the latter regardless of the effect it has on its followers or on the society of which it is a part.

Fundamentalist religions make this choice because they uniformly place a high priority on doctrinal conformity, with such force that it takes higher priority than love, compassion and service.

Indeed, many fundamentalists are so caught up in doctrinal seriousness, that love, service and compassion seem scarcely to even be a part of their thinking.

As one correspondent said to me regarding a certain Christian sect's converts, "Its like they go in and surgically remove any sense of love or any sense of humor." <----

There is a hidden humor in religion, you just have to look carefully ! I've spotted a lot of humor in the tele-vangelists, mostly self proclaimed healers that do their work on television shows, I get a kick out of them! laugh.gif

I believe there's humor in religion, although some "christians" I've met are very straight-laced and act afraid to smile at others. That's not the way to live, life is supposed to be full of fun and love. yes.gif BTW... laugh.gif @ BM!
