Hey there, my favourite subject!
I've been reviewing the possible evidence for Thylacine survival for some time now. I strongly recommend the excellent book 'out of the shadows' to anyone who is interested in Australian cryptids. Also, as part of a study for society, culture and the environment from Griffith Uni, I prepared a small flyer indicating possible reasons for the Thylacine's survival. I posted it here in its entireity so if you want to use your search function, you will find it.

Could you possibly give us a link to your paper? It would help out heaps, thanks. Oh and have you seen the photo that this thread is talking about? If so could you show us cause I have not.

The picture published is an obvious fake. Have a look at the picture, then have a look at this one: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/zoologymuseum/images/thylacine.jpg

An excellent photo showing the differences between thylacine and an actual wolf. Note the enormous gape - it could practically swallow a chicken whole.

It is easy for some people who see dingos at night or a shadow across their back think they are the elusive tiger for example in this picture the brown colour of the dingo is very similular to the tigers.

No doubt this accounts for most, if not all sightings.

I feel sorry the the poor old Dingo's. They're kinda cute....I wouldn't have a baby around them though. I may end up being played by Meryl Streep slipping back into a bad Aussie accent in the sequel to Evil Angels....

No born again Hippie, Harks, but as a young'un we all heard about the glory of Nimbin. Of course being curious teens we were all captivated by the idea of sitting around the wilderness eating special cookies. I think one chick actually ended up running away to Nimbin.. but I keep my head out of the clouds these days, I'm a grown up now (supposedly). geek.gif

That Link was really interesting, Psyche101. Thanks. I was giggling at the faked sighting in 1981- if you're going to fake something like that, make sure you get it right! Hello!! Don't say you're alone if there are shadows of others in the shots... jeez, no brains some people.

I find the sighting in England a bit much! Perhaps he stowed away in someones suitcase? lol

hehe, reminds when I was a teenager and I went to one of the Nimbin Mardi-Grass festivals, cookies were sold in the street, it was a hoot, although things started to get ugly when the sun went down, the locals started going on about being with them, otherwise you are against them and all this sort of carry on, I left, have driven through twice since, does not seem to change. Lost its appeal to me after that. Poor chick, wonder how she ended up.

NP on the link, lots of stories, that WA tracker story kinda got to me, the fact of the shadow with the shotgun, and never seeing the head. Probably a possibility. If someone was to find one, no doubt an indigenous tracker would have the best chance. England, hehe, too many of those big warm beers methinks......I mean come on, warm beer has to mess with your brain!

Spacey
Captain Cinquo are you at Giffith uni? I have a friend studying environmental science there..

The story about the remains found in WA was quite interesting, the ones found with the Dingo.

The Blue Mountains also caught my eye- I've spent alot of time there and there's alot of area for them to hide in. It would have some competition in the form of an alien big-cat, though. I think the Lithgow Panther would give it run for it's money... lol am thinking of a new tv show "Cryptid Gladiators!" grin2.gif

I've never been to Nimbin, although a saw a speical on Pizza where they went there and showed some festival and it made me laugh.. lots of nudity and greenery.

Yes the Blue Mountains is a very large area, and there are a lot of canyons and valleys everywhere, with steep cliffs and dense scrub. I use to run around there a lot when I was in the Army Reserves, it is cold and wet in winter mark my word. It is funny how we always have to train in the worst possible conditions, but better then the deserts. Anyway back to the blueys, sighting of the Lithgow Panther has been sited many times, and the video footage did show a large black cat. But the distance it was videoed at sort of blurred it a bit, and a proper identification of the cat could not be made. There are big cats in Australia, for example in the outback when I was a stockman, feral cats where always hanging around the dams eating unsuspecting birds and small marsupials (bastards) that come for a drink. It is tough conditions so survival of the fittest applies; the feral cats have been adapting changing their colour to match the desert and growing big. There was a report that a 20 kg cat killed a dog, so if we do not get rid of them some how, they will evolve further, lets say after a 1000 years we might have big cats like in Africa and Asia, now that would be interesting.
Rex Gilroy is the local expert on the Lithgow Panther as well as Yowies, UFO's, and a lot of other interesting stuff.
The possibility that Tassie tigers are in the blueys is a high possibility, like the fern tree that was discovered in the mountains a few years ago; this plant has survived since the dinosaur age and thought to no longer exist. This just shows that there is still a lot to discover in my back yard. tongue.gif

The blue mountains would be an excellent hiding place for any cryptid.
It's really beautiful too, I go there quite alot as i have friends there and as a citygirl I get a huge thrill out of hand feeding the possums and birds.
The Lithgow Panther is interesting. There are alot of tales about Alien Big-Cats in Australia and I think there is a huge possibility. Although the ture feral cat can grow to be huge and nasty! I watched a thing on TV the other day about how them and foxes have almost killed of the cute little Bilby. Poor little things...

There was a good book I read called "In the Winter Dark" by Tim Winton- has anyone else read it? It's a cool drama about the panic caused between a group of people living in a remote community when their animals start getting eaten.

In terms of thylacines I don't think they would exist anywhere but Tasmania. Despite the sightings on the mainland, I just don't think they could have survived too long up here.

Thats a really cool pic, but there seems to be another part on the right that wasn't outlined- it looks it had another toe, if that was part of it it would more likely resemble the wombat print if it wasn't complete, or even the devil.

Still I could be wrong... original.gif

I have seen this photo before and think that it is very similar to the TT, but still it is only an impression in the sand. People can reproduce these things. The possibility that this impression is a TT is remote and possible as well. As you have seen the stuffed TT photos I put on this thread and how easy it is to cause belief in their continued exsitence. I hope they are the real TT prints, because there is nothing more then I dream of, then the contined exsitence of animals we have tried to wipe out. Humans are such fools, tongue.gif , we eliminated the TT's because we thought they where killing livestock, but the true fact is TT's are scavangers like the Tassie Devil. When they put out a criminal poster of the TT with cash rewards their days where numbered. We should have made one for feral animals, like the cat or fox, etc. Then we might make a start to make up for all the damage we have done.
[attachmentid=25102]
And this is the result of what we did.
[attachmentid=25104]
And this is what we are left with.

thumbsup.gif I totally agree, doesn't prove anything other than prints are still found with the same characteristics. What made them are another question.

What gives me hope that their might be some remnants of the species are reports from the very hunters that wiped them out (though present day alot have passed on), about finding prints, tell tail 'signs' and hearing the "yips" at night. That coming from the very people who learnt to track and hunt them down many years ago and who knew their 'trade' too well it seems give me encouragement. No proof at all but a slice of hope happy.gif ,

I'd bet money that there are still a handful out there... If i had any money to bet....

Sadly, when money gets involved there will always be fake photographs and sightings... and I agree, in the age of digital video and photograpthy, we are always left with some blurred image or footage as evidence.

I certainly hope that there is a small population alive... even if to simply give the cryptozoologists fits of frustration with the blurred photos. tongue.gif

Hey Stewey, long time no speak... (back on topic).

I am sure if Alien big Cats can survive without real evidence of them existing in the UK.. the Tassie has far better chance of still existing.

I personally believe they are still around.
MichaelS
Yeah, I always enjoy the stories of ABC's roaming around the Isle. yes.gif

one tihng to remember aobut the big cats in eroupe is a while bakc alot of peopel had big cats as pets there and once they got banned many may have been released into the woods look at leopards now very adaptable and many deer to feed on so possibly there could be one or two stalking the forests its possible but who knows
