Ever so offten i will see a hawk, buzzard, or eagle fly over my
house. One day i was just stepping out side when i looked up i
saw a giant bird. If my math was right then its body must of
been about the size of a small car. I have seen cranes and egrits
before too (once a flock of about 8). Plus i have seen these birds
in the months of late summer and mid fall, but only when the wind
is strong. Does anyone eles have any tails of large birds.
exeller
You are so lucky to have seen this bird more than twice? seems a bit suspicious hmm.gif

i don't think any real thunderbird exist.it was most likely just a very large known bird.
HotDogBun
Turkey vulture. Wingspan the size of a small car, easily.
Tone
I think your math could use some tweaking. thumbsup.gif
AROCES
Vultures, do need strong winds when they fly because of their big size. Chance of a new species of bird? Yes, but I would say very slim.
truth seeker
You were mistaken it was just a large bird of a know spieces or you're hoaxing us.
Master Sage
Yeah, somthing probably died in the area, and lured in a vulture.

Can you confirm any other sightings reported of a bird this size in Germany?

Teratornis or ‘monster bird’ was a Pleistocene bird, and this may be the one of largest bird of all time. With a wingspan of over 23ft, Teratornis fed on carrion. Its remains have been found in the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, California, where the animal was presumably trapped when it came down to feed.

who knows maybe these birds survived somehow

By far my favorite topic on this site. My grandfather told me stories of the Texas thunderbirds when I was a little kid. I'm from Falfurrias, Tx and they were sighted here in the late 70's and early 80's. Here's what went down back in the day:

While driving his cruiser through the wee hours one morning 1976, Policeman Arturo Padilla of San Benito, Texas, spotted something unusual in his headlights. It looked like a big bird. A really big bird. A few minutes later Padilla’s fellow officer, Homer Galvan, reported it also. It appeared as a black silhouette that glided through the air. According to Galvan, it never even flapped its wings.

A short time later Alverico Guajardo, a resident of Brownsville, Texas, reported he'd heard a thumping noise outside his mobile home at about nine-thirty at night. When he looked out the door, he saw a monstrous bird standing in his yard. "It's like a bird, but it's not a bird," he said. "That animal is not from this world."

The sighting of the strange bird didn’t end with the reports from Guajardo and the two policemen. Two sisters told of seeing a "big black bird" with "a face like a bat" near a pond outside of Brownsville.

Reports of this creature continued to multiply in the early months of 1976 until finally a radio station offered a reward for the creature's capture. Soon after, a television station broadcast a picture of an alleged bird track measuring some twelve inches in length. As the media hype increased, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department took action, fearing that hunters might mistake a large, rare and protected bird (like a whooping crane) for this mysterious creature. They made an announcement saying, "All birds are protected by state or federal law."

At about this same time several Texas schoolteachers told of seeing the strange flying creature, with a wingspan of at least 12 feet across, while they were driving to work. One of them checked the school library and found a name for the animal: A pterosaur.

Well, Big foot gets in the vicinity of 2500 eyewitness reports a year, the German Thunderbird gets..........................................a mention in a forum.
To be fair, lets look at athe story.

First off, Thunderbirds are an American legend, not German. There have been no Thunderbird German legends. The only German Thunderbird I am aware of is the one in direct competion with Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Body the size of a small car. Righto. That would make it around what 3M long on average? If that is indeed what you saw, then the only bird in history to fit the bill (bad pun especially for jobot) would be Argentavis magnificens , unfortunatley, unless you are at least 5 million years old, it's very unliekly this is what you saw either.
The largest wingspan on a bird living today is the Wandering Albatross, however I doubt this is what you may have seen as they tend to stay in the Southern hemisphere. More likely in your part of the world (I am assuming you did not lie when filling out your personal information) would be a Great Bustard . Big bird that. (more music for jobot's ears) grin2.gif

When I was at college about 10 years ago in Hampshire, southern UK, I was walking across a field with a couple of my colleagues when we spotted an enormous bird - absolutely massive. It took off and we estimated that it had a wingspan of 6ft or more. We assumed it must have been some kind of optical trick, but one of the guys I was with suggested we ring the Hawk Conservancy which was about 15 miles away and report this giant bird anyway.

So, a mile or two trek to the nearest call-box...

"Hello, Hawk Conservancy"
"Erm, hello... I think my friends and I have just seen some kind of giant bird and we thought we ought to let you know"
"How big would you say this bird was?"
"Well... er... it sort of looked like it had a 6 or 7 foot wingspan..."
"WHAT? WHERE ARE YOU?!"

Turns out that during one of the flying demonstrations the Hawk Conservancy's Andean Condor had flown off instead of flying back to the handler, and now the largest flying land bird in the world was loose over the Hampshire countryside. Actually the wingspan was closer to 9 feet, and we got our picture in the paper and some free tickets to visit the Hawk Conservancy.

Point of the story? Are there any bird sanctuaries near you which might have lost a giant bird?

I am prepared to smack you up-side the head if nescessary.
Just because we see these giant birds in America doesn't mean they can't exist elsewhere.

Come and have a crack at it tough guy grin2.gif I'll deem it necessary if you need.

That is right, they could exist elsewhere, however, if the entire history of the reported cryptid is one solitary report, the likelyhood of mistaken identity is very high. Any idiot should be able to understand that thumbsup.gif

Reported sightings take place whilst in the air in most cases, I have read up on this too in the past. In the air, there is nothing at all to make a size comparison with. This makes mistaking the size not only easy, but likely. Scale is really quite difficult to determine for a person experienced in a filed that requires this skill, for the average amatuer, almost impossible.
There are some sightings that take place on the ground and some in tree's, once again, in every case distance is a common factor which distorts the average persons perception of scale.
I may not be an aficionado on Thunderbirds, however, scale is something I do understand fluently.

The only bird known to have existed wth the body the size of a small car I refrenced n the previous page. Go back and look it up (and you critisise me in the previous post for not reading every sentence closely!! The cheek!!). I also offered a suitable alternative from what I percieved to be the area. Is it possible that this dinosaurian creature could still be around today? The reports suggest so, I really do not know what to make of The 1977 Lawndale, Illinois Thunderbird Case. That one is intruging and fascinating. The report seems too real and one of the more credible cryptid stories in existance. But having said that I have a huge regard for our methods and find it difficult to believe that such a majestic creature could even possibly remain hidden for so long, yet we find things like the blonde lobster.

PS, Nobody was ready to burn your newfound buddy, it was a case of going through the facts - the process of elimination. That is how things get solved in the real world. yes.gif Not wild guesses and silly theories.
