Be Mine? Whatever...

Modern slang phrases - like 'Minger', 'Bovvered' and 'Chav' - are to feature on a new rival to Loveheart sweets.

Asda says its Whatevers are inspired by comedy characters from the Catherine Tate Show and Little Britain.

Lovehearts, made by Swizzels, feature innocently flirtatious phrases such as 'Love You', 'Say Yes' and 'Be Mine'.

But the new versions replace these with up-to-date street expressions such as 'In it', 'As if', 'Proper', 'Respect' and - of course - 'Whatever'.

Asda says its sweets, which will sell in stores for 24p a packet, will be more "culturally correct" than the originals.

Asda sweet buyer James Davies said: "We thought it was time to update this old favourite.

"With sayings from characters in shows such as Little Britain and the Catherine Tate Show providing us with more and more contemporary slang, we thought we needed to reflect this."

In the late 70s and early 80s when I was in grade school, there was a Valentine's Day policy of forcible giving so unpopular, 4-eyed students such as myself would not feel hurt. The joy of receiving one or two cards or packages of candy, as in past observances, was replaced with the numbness of quantity.

Trouble being, nobody knew whether the "Be Mine" or "Love You" candies were authentic sentimentality or the result of coercion. Hence, they lost their intended meaning and were translated as "Whatever" and "As If".

my god... what about the 'normal' people? there may be a a lot of chavs, but theres more people who detest them... imo this is going be the worst move they may ever make.

When I lived in England just seeing a group of Chavs made me physically ill and now they want to make candy out of their slang?? Sick.

An interesting thing to note -- the old saying were all nice. The modern sayings are all bratty and snotty sounding. And I have to admit I have no clue what some of them mean - maybe because I'm old. (31) ?

What the heck is a chav? What is minger? Is bovvered just bad spelling?

It's British slang.

A chav is defined here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav
A minger is someone who is disgusting. And bovvered is 'bothered' phonetically.

Yeah, I agree with you. They used to be nice and now they are obnoxious. And I'm 34. thumbsup.gif

Okay.... why would the company want to put insults on its candy for Valentine's day? Makes no sense.

I agree totally. They should just stick with the sayings on the candy now. If they make a 'slang' candy then they need to include more phrases than just chav ones. If I got those for Valentine's Day I'd chuck them back at the offending party!
