Balrogs are fictional demon-like creatures from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. A Balrog (Sindarin for "Demon of Might"; the Quenya form is Valarauko or Valarauco, plural Valaraukar) was a tall, menacing being in the shape of a Man, having control of both fire and shadow and with a fiery whip of many thongs. They induced great terror in friends and foes alike and could shroud themselves in darkness and shadow.

I never heard of it before Lord of the Rings. And by the way, it’s a pain in the butt to beat when it rises out of the ground in your castle (LOTR I and II the game).

And I thought I was the only one who played maple . What about the "Cargo" / " Kargo " ? I heared it's the pet of the balrog , or am I wrong ? Balrog also appeared in Survival Project ( online game ) and in RuneScape too , I think . And heck yes , I played lord of the rings too . My version of it is - Lord of the rings - the third age . The balrog was a pain in the neck ...

I haven't heard of any creature called Balrog in the Norse mythology (and as a Swede with an interest in mythology I feel I should've if it'd been there), the only place I've heard it is in LOTR. Surt is a giant with a flaming sword who's going to set the world on fire when Ragnarök comes, so while that may very well have inspired Tolkien in the first place I wouldn't say it's the same thing. And as for the Balrog appearing in many different games and so, well, so does hobbits/halflings, and most elves are modelled after the ones created by Tolkien, so it's not so strange.

In
Dungeons & Dragons, a Balor is a high-ranking demon, and is for all intents and purposes a balrog (complete with sword and whip).
In mythology, Balor is the name of the king of the formorians, a race of Irish giants. He had one eye which could slay anyone it looked upon.

J. R. R. Tolkien pretty much rewrote the fantasy genre... since his works were essentially meant to be an alternative mythology for hte British Isles, it's perfectly acceptable that it inspired so much fantasy systems. The Balrog is a creation of Tolkein however, as others have said.

The Balrog is a creature that kills not for bloodthirst or for the side of evil... The Balrog is a creature that fights for money and pride. This creature is drawn to areas that are bathed in the glow of neon lights and frequented by such characters as "show girls" and "big balla pimps". The Balrog is most famous for its appearance in the arcade game "Street Fighter II"
