BurnSide
I'd like to start this topic for the members of Unexplained Mysteries who have a love of taking pictures and capturing stories in images. I've recently found myself splurging on a relatively decent camera to fuel my desire to take pictures of the beauty that surrounds me in everyday life, and would like to share it with you and experience some of your own.

Photography I find is a peaceful hobby that allows people to share their surroundings and experiences while expressing oneself through the art of imagery. Now i certainly don't claim to be an expert in any way at all, i simply like to take pictures of things. Sometimes those pictures can only fully be enjoyed by the one who took it, and sometimes that can be a source of inspiration for others, or simple enjoyment to view the moments that others have captured.

So please, share some of your Photography, discuss your work and enjoy the work of others. I shall be uploading some of my own pictures very shortly.

I've been interested in photography for as long as I can remember, but didn't start until September of last year in hopes of getting the attention of a certain female photographer. I didn't succeed, but at least I found a new hobby.

Here are ten of my favorite pieces of work:

Gorgeous! And they call you colorless, that couldn't be further from the truth. original.gif You have a very impressive eye for art there, and it's really inspiring. Thank you, very much for sharing your work. I really enjoy the city-scapes and attention to the placement of the objects in your pictures.

I think smoke is sometimes beautiful in photos, especially if colored by sunlight. Especially if its the pinkish one of sunset.
BurnSide
Quite right. I imagine it would be rather difficult to capture a good shot of it but it can look quite magical. I'll give it a shot.

I really, really love the first one. It had a mood to it, a silent solemn mood that really draws me in and makes me want to know more. Good work!
BurnSide
Okay. Bear in mind this is something i've just started, i'm sure with time my images will be a lot better.

I have a fascination with sunsets, a rather awful one. laugh.gif Promise the next batch wont be full of them.

May 1st 2006.

(This kind of made me want to post a few, but I am in no means an expert in this area. I just like to shoot random pictures, mainly of my cats...and things. 8D)

Here's two of my very favorites, even if the picture of my cat isn't exactly...well, 'art', I still find it amusing.

hehe your cat is very cute, and the picture is great it's very good quality. I've tried taking a few of mine but it's difficult to get a good shot, especially considering the cat seems to always be on a pot of coffee.

I absolutely adore though the picture of the Butterfly. Well captured.

Camping is a great time to get some photographing in, I hope you get something worthwhile. The outdoors is a wonderful place. happy.gif

Oh, you really like that picture of my kitty? w00t.gif Thanks! (Though, the shallow shadow is kind of distracting. I hate the automatic flash.)
Anyway. I find it's easiest to take pictures of Berry and Half once I've got a few 'experimental' pictures of them running around. They start to calm a little, and pose. tongue.gif Also, "tease" them a little, like: "I'm going to get your picture! Come 'ere -Insert Cat Name Here-, you silly thing. *FLASH*"

One more thing! Try and take pictures of your cat(s) when they're lounging, those make for good (funny!) pictures too.

Thanks, for the comment on the butterfly picture.

I'm taking a photog course, but all the pictures I think are best are in the unit folders... >_< so before I put them in this terms folder I'll try and scan them and upload them.
atm I'm using an Olympus OM-1, although its around 25 years old and the light metre is just a black stick on the left (and impossible to see at most times...) its still pretty good at picking the fine details up. it was my fathers, but he's thinking of getting me a new camera (no complaints here tongue.gif )

I love all the pictures on here atm, I just hope I can match them when ever I can upload mine tongue.gif

Nothing wrong with an old camera, I use a Canon A-1 from the mid seventies, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

oh I know there isn't, just the light metre is very hard to see in dark area's. though its a very good camera, as you said also, I wouldn't trade mine either (but it belongs to my father, but if it didn't I still wouldnt trade it.)

its kinda sweet, how you only after a while you can start to 'see' pictures everywhere, in your head ect.
Waspie_Dwarf
I love photography. I'm a bit old fashioned, whilst I love my digital camera I still think film is the best medium. Developing black and white prints in a dark room is just great fun. The way the image begins to appear on a blank sheet of paper still strikes me as being close to magic (and I'm a chemist).

I've put a few of my pictures in the member photography album of the multimedia gallery. Some of them are from a trip to Kenya I made in 2004.

So far there are 9 but I will add some more later. Any honest comments and constructive criticism would be more than welcome.

some nice photos in here! good to see some nice creativity.

i have some shots, i havent been doing much recently as theres not much around here but most recent ones i guess ive been doing some close up shots of insects in the garden, pretty hard because you have such a tiny depth of focus.

frogfish
Hey jonb, nice insect pics! What are the settings on you camera for those?

That moon photo got me thinking...I should post my Astrphotography CCD images...Currently I am having some trouble with the camera...so as soon as it get warmer here, I'll post them...and take some new pics.
jonb
i wow shadow wolf, those pics are great! I mean to go somwhere to photograph animals once i get a better telephoto lens

frogfish to tell the truth i just take a normal lens and turn it around to the camera the wrong way, it gives the macro effect a lot cheaper original.gif but you have to hold the lens in place it can be quite awquard.

I love astrophotography, i havent done much of it though as i live near a biggish town which gives some nasty light pullution :s also my shutter release broke in cold weather and lens' getting dew on them ruining the photo is annoying!

Do you use a telescope?
frogfish
Thanks Jonb...Nice pictures Shadow Wolf

Yes jonb, I use a telescope. I have a 10" Meade LXD 75 Newtonian Refractor and the camera is a Meade DeepSky CCD Imager.

Just through my telescope, I get beautiful views of all the Messier Objects, and much, much more...In the Summer, I spend hours every week outside under the stars.

What are the sky conditions like for you? I live on the outskirts of London and I'm lucky if I can see the Milky Way 4 times a year. A city of 7 millions has an awful lot of sodium lamps.
jonb
thats cool, i agree lamps really ruin the sky.. i saw a cheap telescope with camera fitting on ebay a while ago was considering getting it, it could track the movement of the earth aswell which is great.
i also agree that film is the best medium as its free of anything going wrong electronically, and for long exposures there is no image noise. but it got too expensive for me and i never bothered getting film exposed so i went digital. still have an old canon film cam but its a bit dodgy

Digital is the way to go for astrophotography; compared to analogue film - even hi ISO such as 1600 - a digicam's CCD/CMOS sensor is an absolute light-bucket. This allows shorter exposure times (typically 10-15 seconds instead of several minutes); so for wide-sky shots you don't need a driven mount, and you don't get so much excess of sodium glow from streetlights. If we can get a decent moonless clear night (I know its working out wrong in the lunar cycle!) it'd be well worth trying to capture Comet P73/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 with a tripod mounted camera and standard lens.
coldethyl
jonb those are gorgeous!
ShadowDancer I like that pic you took even with the color of the water.

Yes, i do feel alot of my work is ruined because i'm not using the camera correctly.
I'm not sure exactly what it is because i don't have it on me, but i *know* that something is going wrong on it. My night pictures never come out at all, and they're nearly always blurry.
Forgive me but i do remain woefully ignorant since i'm pretty much an amateur with a camera who likes taking pictures. I'm sure i'll be able to bring up a manual online or something. It's second-hand, see. Just a small digital, not really completely fit to be taking landscape images.

I'll find out what it is and get back to the thread.

Amazing pictures guys, thank you all for sharing. This is fast becoming my favourite topic, there's so much beauty in it. original.gif

Yeah I wish I knew more about photography. I just have a little Fuji digital camera and I take pictures of what I like. I do always have it with me though. It was a birthday pressie and I have gotten more use out of it than any other pressie ever!

Are you using a tripod BurnSide? Night pictures need fairly long exposures and a tripod is esential. I use a cheap mini tripod for my digital camera and have got some resonable results.

The picture below, for example is a 1 second exposure. It would not be possible to hand hold a camera steady for that long and it would have been blurred with out the tripod.

[attachmentid=25597]
BurnSide
No, i'm not. I didn't even think about a Tripod, but along those lines i didn't even think about longer exposure.
Complete beginner here guys. original.gif I don't think that's even possible with my camera, i'll have to find out.

very nice pic, I like it!

and burns, if you can't use a tripod (they can also be pretty pricey for the decent ones. cheap ones can be unsturdy sometimes.) you should lean the camera on a wall, cheap and its free tongue.gif

Waspie_Dwarf
Thank you Leliel.

If you are going to use a wall one tip I was give is have something with you like a mini bean bag or even a soft toy. The problem with a wall is that you tend not to be able to change the elevation of the camera. Using a mini bean bag you can place the camera on that and use it to point the camera up or down. A lightly stuffed toy will work but will look very silly.
BurnSide
That's really good thinking. Thanks, i will definately take that advice.
