Bill Gates wishes he weren't so rich
The corporate leader says he doesn't like the attention of being the world's richest man.

May 4, 2006: 3:40 PM EDT

REDMOND, Wash. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said Wednesday he wished he were not the world's richest man.

"I wish I wasn't. There is nothing good that comes out of that," said Gates, whose personal fortune sank by billions since last week when the software giant disappointed investors by saying new investments would crimp earnings.

The corporate leader who made Microsoft into the world's largest software maker - and who is also one of the biggest philanthropists - is seen as a man who does not like publicity. He explained that he did not like the attention of being the world's richest person.

"You get more visibility as a result of it," he said during an interview conducted by CNBC reporter Donny Deutsch in front of a crowd of people attending a Microsoft advertising event. (Watch Bill Gates on CNN Pipeline's CNNMoney Business Update - 1:54)

The Microsoft co-founder said that the person he learned most from in the world, aside from technology colleagues, was fellow-billionaire and legendary investor Warren Buffett.

"He has this very refreshing, simple way of looking at things so I put him top of the list," said Gates, adding that the top lesson from Buffett was the importance of integrity.

Still, Gates joked about his plight being unequaled in wealth. Asked if he surrounded himself with financial peers, he quipped, "No, I sit alone."

Gates has been the richest man in the world for eight years running - since 1998 - and was worth $90 billion at his fortune's peak in 1999, according to the Forbes list of richest people. His fortune is currently at $50 billion, according to the magazine.

He did more than that. He donated 1/3 of his wealth to charity and is still the richest man thumbsup.gif

Well with the good comes the bad. I am glad that he spends so much thought into giving to charities. I do wish he'd put more thought into the ethics of how he obtains his own money though.

For instance: A poor family goes to a big box store and buys an e-machine on sale for $250 with basic software and internet accessibility needed for the children's schooling. A year and a half later, just out of warranty, the family comes to my shop and the motherboard is dead.

Scenario 1: The xp code is on the box. If it is for xp pro, it is technically illegal but I can get it to work. If it is xp home it is technically illegal but I can call the 1800 number and lie and get them to "activate windows". Either scenario I risk my butt with a lawsuit but it's a small risk.

Scenario 2: The sticker wasn't on the case but on an xp book or packaging, or the sticker was for some reason removed from the case and lost - the family cannot supply the code. The only legal option is to tell the family that they MUST (again!) buy another copy of Windows XP. The other way is to pirate a copy but to receive updates I will have to crack it and Microsoft is constantly finding new workarounds to new cracks - so not only would this route be illegal but the software would contain security flaws.

Solutions: Don't force the users to buy a new copy of XP with a new motherboard. Tie the XP code into the service tag of the specific make and model of the computer (more paperwork for microsoft but they have the money, right??). Another option is to simply put another xp code INSIDE the computer where it can't be lost or removed as easily. Any of these ways would prevent me from having to make that dreaded call, which I have to make at least 2 or 3 times a week!! Now granted this is putting responsibility in their hands, but they took on this responsibility when they (argue if you must) dominated the market with their monopoly. These families that I have to call every week have children that need their computers for school. Which makes the whole thing more of a travesty that our government school system is forcing even more Microsoft profits!!

So, in short, I have no sympathy. I may have more when he comes into my shop and calls these poor mothers and tells them they have to pay an extra $80 to get their computers back. Or maybe when he gives the shop owner all the profits he's lost from giving these families discounts on repairs so they could afford their extra copy of XP. Revere Gates if you must, but I'll put my admiration on my shop owner who helps out these poor families while Microsoft rides on his back and takes all the credit.
