I am new here, but hope someone can help me find answers for a friend. She is very practical and not given to strange imaginings, but has told me that on occasion she and her husband will smell pipe smoke-neither of them are smokers. In the past she has asked who was there and usually what happens is candles are bent in the living room. She also finds marbles in odd places- children are grown and long ago moved out and grandchild is too young for them. Well, to shorten this a bit, she called me earlier today and said when she smelled smoke yesterday, she asked who it was, but also what they wanted, with the following results- found a gold colored marble in a clothes drawer, found pieces of what seemed to be nylon string in various areas of the floor throughout house and she and her husband have been hearing loud banging noises, but she said she can't tell where they are coming from- they hear the banging, but doesn't seem to have an origin. She said the last thing that really made her feel nervous, was in a spare bedroom, she walked in to see that there was an impression on the bed, as though a very tall person had been laying there and then set on the edge of the bed.Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help!! original.gif

Hi kieran, and welcome to UM.

That does sound like poltergeist. Things appear in places they shouldn't, rappings, bangings, strange smells. My family have had a few incidents over the years of strange tobacco smells, recognisable perfumes, etc.

I don't know if this is a hard and fast rule, but usually poltergeist are associated with the presence of an adolescent in the house. It sounds from your account that there aren't any, but as I say, I don't think it has to be for every case.

As for what to do about it? A local medium, perhaps, or a branch of the spiritualist church, maybe? Or if your friends are religious, perhaps their own church might be able to help.

If it is a poltergeist, it might eventually fade away. Maybe you could offer to investigate the matter for them, if you have an interest in the paranormal?

Anyway, speaking as someone who shares a house with things that shouldn't be here, I can offer your friends my sympathies.

oh welcome aboard kieran6,

Do you know exactly how long this has been happening to your friend or if anything has changed dramatically in her life recently?

cuffy,

Is a poltergeist a lower entity or is that energy of person that once lived or both?

Blimey, sarky, that's a toughie. blink.gif

To be honest, I've read about cases that suggest one or the other. Some seem to be mindless energy, others (like the Enfield poltergeist) have a personality attached.

Sorry Cuffy,

The only entity problem I had was with a ouija, and I just label it lower entity. In fact, I always break it down to positive and negative energy. I consider everything else a sub category, but I've been thinking lately that may not be a good idea. I mean there most be a reason to sort them other than to keep track of them. Hope that makes sense. original.gif

And Keiran,

There are lots of people here, that can help u. As for me, I think I need to know a little more about the situation before I offer advice. It doesn't seem like the entity is scaring your friend. Is she uncomfortable? I think of energy a bit like dogs. They can smell fear, and that is why they hang around.

All of those things, separately or in combination, have happened in haunted locations. I've experienced the pipe tobacco phenomenon myself. It is true that it's hard to draw the line sometimes between ghosts and poltergeists. Can they get any history for their home? Previous occupants? Neighbours?

well firstly - Hi Kieran original.gif

Poltergiest activity isn't as rare as people believe. Many, many people experience it on a very small scale, mainly just one incident. Poltergiest usually fade away after a few weeks, but some of the most famous cases have lasted for years.
The first signs are usually bangs and raps, scratching, and the movement of objects. Then, if the poltergiest develops, sometimes physical contact and raspy voices.
I do not believe that actual spirits or entities are to blame. I sincerely believe that it is the externalised energies from a person, usually someone who is going through a traumatic time in their life - not always an adolescent - and is 'leaking' energy.
I was lucky enough to investigate a violent poltergiest here in Dorset last year. A well-to-do family with a beautiful farmhouse (a modern one). The cat had enough and left when things got really bad.......my opinion? It was one of the boys.....he wasn't getting on with his father and all his frustrations were causing RSPK around the home. The fear of the 'poltergiest' was generating more engergy - and this fuelled the polt even more...........

Hope this has been of some help

Hammy what do you think about the possibility that it is both internal energy as well as an external force.
I've read both theories about poltergeists and still think that some may be discarnate entities who feed off the energy created by conflict/unhappiness etc in some kind of symbiotic way. I know this can be a very grey area but I find it harder to believe that a human can be solely responsible for this otherwise I think we would see more instances of strong PK in other ways too. The examples studied always seem to be small and localised, nothing like the sometimes fantastic instances asscociated with poltergeist activity.

To smell something that isn't really there i.e tobacco smoke, perfume, flowers etc.. you are experiencing the essence of a spirit in the room. The psychic ability used when this happens is known as Clairsentience. The ability to "sence" psychical manifestations that cannot be percieved in any other manner.

As to finding marbles and bits of string around the house, I find this most strange to my knowledge spirits do not generally leave material objects about the place.

The candles bending, this could be down to a flaw in the candles design, although I have witnessed spirit activity around candles myself and withought actually seeing what happened to the candles I can't say why they would do that.

The impression on the bed is actually quite common and I have had many experiences of this myself.

I do not think though that if this is a haunting the spirit means anyone any harm. Maybe you should try and contact a local psychic group to do an investigation on the place even if its just to put your minds at rest.

My family also had few encounter wih the tobacco smell in the house almost aweak but only the smell nothing alse... But some time it is hard to belive that there is only human involving in this kind of activity...Human mind is capable of doing all this thing...i.e banging, smell of tobacco, writing on the wall, mirror breaking, plates flying all over the place and even pinc on skin......
Many years ago i remember reading a book called "True Encounter" There is case where a little girls hair been burned by a invisiable hand, and pinch on the girls skin with marked with red color ink....Is this possibily the work of human mind also..One of the investigator suspect his brother involve in the activity that causing all this activity by releasing the negatif energy involving strong PK,So they bring the boy to stay with theire grandparents house but the activity still happen....
Hmmmm....... wacko.gif wacko.gif wacko.gif wacko.gif wacko.gif

Hello everyone-Thank you for replying and welcoming to the group! Sorry I didn't answer sooner! My friend has told me all activity has ceased- at least for now- the smelling of tobacco and candles being bent happen off and on, as do the marbles showing up. Except the marbles have always been blue and white and never gold. After reading replies, it jogged my thinking a bit- her Step-daughter had been coming over to take her father(friend's husband) for medical treatments- the step-daughter's mother had committed suicide several years ago and she herself seems to have some emotional highs and lows at times- so don't know if this brought some kind of influence to the home or not. My friend had also been doing major fall cleaning and was getting a bit stressed about it. As far as the house history, they built the house themselves- did know the land owner and since he smoked a pipe, she always thought it was him and his friend, also a pipe smoker, but never felt them a threat. As far as she knows they were just regular guys, with no history of violence or any extreme emotions, etc. The only other thing I could think of is that there is an archeological dig being done not too far from her home, which was started about tow months ago.

Probably it is a Poltergaste. As it is known they shows, when there are some emotional problems for somebody. They must find the problem and solve it!
As well it could be some ghost. I couldnot catch, but were there any murders or suicides in that house. Then it could be a ghost, because they do work with material things. It could be useful if they called ghost-hunters or do some history research to help the ghost leave the house.
I also would like you to rememmber about curses and deamons. In that case they should call a priest or a wizard.
Good luck!
