The facts:

NOT Car lights in 1883: The Ghost lights of Marfa still shine as bright as ever, and are still as mysterious as they were when they were first seen by early settlers who drove their herds into the Marfa area in 1883

In 1947, Fritz Kahl, a local war veteran and pilot, chased the Lights in an airplane, but came up empty. In 1975, Kahl made another attempt, this time with a team that included observers in Jeeps and planes. The "Marfa Ghost Light Hunt," as it was called, featured "more than a hundred carloads of observers gathered between the two observation points, one at Paisano Pass and the other at the entrance to the old Presidio County Airport," according to the Sul Ross "Skyline" newspaper.

The Shadowlands discription: Marfa - the Marfa Lights - It is a great tourist attraction. For years everyone has gone to this place on the road between Marfa and Alpine. No one knows if the lights are in fact spectral or of UFO origin.

Does anyone have a theory? AH HAHAHA.... give it a try.

Excellent articles. I have no theories as to what they may be other than what was stated in the articles. But it's an interesting phenomenon all the same. The event described in
the second article is a prime example of if you can't explain it, have fun with it. I
would very much like to visit and see it for myself. thumbsup.gif

You're right, most important is to have fun! Prime advice.

Also, I did not mention in the post post, but instead I cut and pasted.

Well, here's something we did do.

We placed one patrol car on I-67, one on I-169, and the same for I-2810, I-90, I-117, and I-112 cover nearly twenty miles. All patrol cars kept in contact using radios. When the lights were visible, all of our patrol cars confirmed that there were no cars traveling except one incident.

Weather was fair, and we picked a day that was windy so there would be 0% humidity.

In addition, cars moving would make the light move. I have never seen a light stay in the same spot, as a car would have been out of range to create that.

I dunno, could it be ball lightning? What do you think it is?

I saw on some program once where lights like these turned out to be reflections from a lighthouse window.

It is better than an orb, I'll give you that... thumbsup.gif

Accually I was talking about the Marfa Lights Festival, but what you did sounds
like alot of fun too! thumbsup.gif

Ball lightning maybe, but Lighthouse reflection is slim chance considering it's in the desert.

Here's a satellite image:

balllightning maybe.. yeah
coldethyl
Okay then! Let's all go with ball lightning! thumbsup.gif

Yeah I guess there aren't many lighthouses in the desert. Well there could be a crazy old geezer living in one he built out there just to throw airplanes off. That sounds about as reasonable as most things I read around here... wink2.gif

Interesting theory but I think it's highly unlikely. That area doesn't seem all that
desolate or remote. Besides, if it was some old geezer playing games, the FAA
and the police would have put a stop to it a long time ago.

I was only joking. I'm going with the ball lighning theory. thumbsup.gif

Ball lightning could be the culprit. But I've never heard it to be so common.
From all I've read and heard, Ball lightning is very rare.
Shadow_Wolf
More likely to be earthlights rather than ball-lightning. A similar phenomena has been seen for years at Sedona (CA?). Also similar to the Hessdalen Lights in Norway.

Either way I'm more inclined to believe that it's some naturally occurring phenomenon.

Or the crazy geezer in a lighthouse. Just because that's funny to me.... yes.gif

It's desolate alright. Desolate enough to look at your cell phone to see if you have reception....... (yeah, youo all have done it)
It's desolate enough to if you come near to running low on gas or fuel than you would be stranded for a awhile or straight SOL.
If desert isn't desolate, what other terrain in the US do we have that water and staying out of the heat is crucial.

Do these lights appear right on the horizon? If not then ignore my post hehe...Could it be somesort of illusion caused by the terrian/level of land under the right conditions?

I have seen a similar type thing in daylight hours on the horizon from a beach in Cape Cod ( the Hyannis beach along from the Kennedy's house in case anyone is ever there and wants to see this illusion for themselves). Ok I know that daylight throws alot of spanners into it the works because of light reflecting, the sun and the sea. But this illusion occured when standing a few metres from the tide line behind the dunes and disapeared when we moved up onto the dunes which were higher up. Being in the spot I described it was like seeing the entire horizon littered with phantom light impressions of ships coming in, you almost had a view/sense of the curve of the globe and these 'ships' were sailing high in on that curve, but when you stood above sea water level there was nothing to see.
