Borley Rectory was deemed the most haunted house in England for many years, before being destroyed by a fire in February 1939. Over 2000 reports of paranormal phenomena were reported, from aparitions to "floating bricks" and writing appearing on the walls.

This is the alleged "Floating Brick" photograph.

Story from a man who was involved in the taking of the picture :

"On April 5, 1944, I visited Borley in order to inspect the demolition work for myself. Onereason why I went was because I had been asked by LIFE, the famous American pictorialmagazine to do an article, 'Haunted England.' For illustrating this article, the London editorrequired photographs of various alleged haunted houses, including Borley Rectory.
"Mr. David E. Scherman, the LIFE photographer (and an accredited warcorrespondent to the United States Army); Miss Cynthia Ledsham, the researcher and archivistattached to Time and Life, Ltd.; and I all journeyed by car in order to take the pictures.
"Fortunately, it was a sunny day, and how successful our trip was can be judged by Mr.Scherman's magnificent photographs reproduced in this volume.
"We had a shock when [we] saw the rapidly diminishing ruins. Only the back part of thehouse - leading to the kitchen quarters - was standing. The cellars were open to the sky wherethey had not been filled in.
"We were disappointed that demolition work was so far advanced.
"He was using a miniature camera of American make, and in order to embrace the whole ofthe ruins he had to stand at least one hundred feet away from them as the lens he was using wasnot a very wide-angled one. Miss Ledsham and I stood by his side, watching the proceedings.
"As Mr. Scherman pressed the trigger. . . . a brick, or part of a brick, suddenly shot up aboutfour feet into the air in front of what remained of the kitchen passage. The three of us saw it. Weall laughed and called it 'the last phenomenon,' and said the Poltergeists were 'demonstrating' inhonor of our visit.
"We walked over to the passage, where there were many bricks lying about. I picked upseveral, and all appeared normal. No string or wire was attached to any of them, and we saw noworkmen at all on that side of the Rectory.
"The incident puzzled us, and I personally soon forgot about it.
"A few days later Mr. Scherman sent me the proofs of the photographs he had taken. Theywere in the form of small contact prints from the original negatives, two and a quarter inchessquare.
"Then, on the telephone, he asked me if I had noticed anything about the photograph of theruins. I said no, and he then pointed out that against the dark background of the passage could beseen a tiny white pin-point. It was the brick!
"Without knowing it at the time, Mr. Scherman opened his shutter at the fraction of a secondwhen the brick was poised in mid-air. In proof of what a rapid exposure he gave the picture, there is no sign of movement of the brick in the photograph.
"Mr. Scherman kindly sent me ten-inch-by-eight-inch enlargements of his photographs. Atmy suggestion, [he] sent me a very much enlarged picture of the 'flying brick.'
"It is worth noting that the place where the brick suddenly shot up was formerly part of thekitchen passage - focus of many phenomena, and on the walls of which appeared at least two'messages.' One of them was 'Marianne-Light-Mass-Prayers.'
"If, indeed, this was a genuine paranormal phenomenon, then we have the first photographever taken of a Poltergeist projectile in flight."

MY GOD, IT IS A FLOATING BRICK!!   user posted image

Thats got to be one of the easiest things to FAKE. rolleyes.gif

I agree Tommy

Given that they were trying to take a picture for a magazine, it would have given them good reason to fake a picture such as this.

In the end it's down only to the testimony of the men who took the picture.

I tend to agree, it looks highly easy to fake and lacks any considerable photographic clarity.

Fake has my vote

[blue]Given that the Rectory was in the middle of a demolition, a falling brick slipping from the structure seems like a fairly likely event. The fact that they caught it seems lucky, but not suggestive of paranormal goings on. That said, however, it is questionable that the 'falling brick' is fairly clear, with no blurring, which suggests it was stationary, or the shutter speed was very quick indeed...

:s01  shock, horror.

I've not ever heard of this one before.

the brick bit that is, everyone has heard of Borley Rectory  ;D

Fake got my vote as well, there is too much shadow around the brick, someone could have been in the shadows holding it up.
PurpleStuart
Could be faked, there definately is a motive to do so, but i'm not 100% sure that it is.

Not sure
Kira
Hmmm considering the people that took this photo had an already famous landmark ie The Rectory it seems that the had to have a new angle to get people interested in buy the magazine.
But I have gone for 'not sure'

hey is it just me or does any 1 else see a faint outline of a person in the very upper right of the picture in the white area???? but floating brick come on... i will give u credit for snaping a very fast picture of a FALLING brick.. but the person in the upper right corner is what this pic should be about!! excl.gif excl.gif excl.gif

[FONT=Courier][SIZE=7][COLOR=blue]Woah! If the picture was taken during a demolition of the building, then it is very strange that you can see a person through the upper right window! FREEEEEAKy but the brick is most likely fake. IT's Ironic how the person is there but they only noticed (or faked) that "Floating Brick" I'm voting fake for the brick excl.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Agree with you all - very fake - good point LB about the fact that there is no blurring of the brick which would suggest either a high shutter speed used or a suspended brick.

Mock conversation at time:

"Psst.Okay, Borely, you ready? I'm gonna take this brick and throw it up in the air as high as I can. When it slows and pauses a moment before gravity takes over and causes it to come down, you take the picture. Now. as soon as you do that I'm going to be over here and I am going to scream 'Hey, it's a flying brick!'. We'll fool everybody. This is gonna be good. "

maybe the brick was faked but the apparitions in the top were real
AlienSama
there is one explination behind this. grab a string, and a friend and go to a abandoned run down building with bricks, then tie a string around it and have the friend hide behind the wall and then shoot the picture. there ya go, an official explination curtasy of AlienSama. original.gif

I was at Borley about 8 years ago. It indeed is a mysterious place. Esp the shape of the trees around the church. When I was there it was in full repair and the door was locked. Unfortunately I was in the hands of young english teenagers who were stopping just for me to see it then off to the local pub to carouse wiuth the mates.

It was a mysterious place so oridnary and innocent from the road. But upon entering the ground and the shape of the seemingly manicured trees an eerie or should I say interesting feeling came over me. Then the teen smoked a dubby and i did inhale and it was over. Off to the pub.,

I did not see any supernature things. Nor did i take a photograph of the place and I am a photographer.
Misery
I'm going to say fake!
