this took place in 1968,but is burned in my memory.while visiting my grandparents farm in april 1968 i went with my grandfather to a pasture he had leased out to a neighbor to graze his cows in.my grandparents owned 1000 acres of mostly timberland and the pasture was at the far end of the property.the only road was dirt and when it rained it washed big holes in the road so my grandfather and i went on horseback.this was mountainous country and it took all day to get to the pasture where the cattle were.we made camp,ate and talked for awhile and turned in about 10 o'clock.around one in the morning my grandfather woke me up and said the horses were acting nervous.we got up,checked them and i laid back down.as my grandfather started to lay down he looked at a clearing about 90 yards straight ahead of us and said get up and get your rifle,theres a bear at the edge of the clearing.i jumped up and grabbed the rifle and my grandfather picked up his gun.he had an old muzzle loading hawken rifle that he loved to hunt with.as we stood up,the "bear"started coming toward us,but on it's hind legs.my grandfather told me to fire a shot to see if it would retreat,so i did.by now the "bear"was maybe 50 yards away.it stopped for a few seconds then started toward us again.when this thing got about 25-30 yards from us,my grandfather said "that's not a bear.he was'nt sure what it was so he yelled out"who's there".no answer.he yelled again "who's there",answer or you will get shot.no answer again,but the yelling seemed to make whatever it was mad.it started toward us again and when it got to maybe 20 feet from us i could'nt believe what i was looking at.my grandfather raised his gun and one more time said "who are you.still no answer.this thing was looking right at us and my grandfather fired and hit it in it's right shoulder.it fell backwards on it's back but sprang right back up.it stood there for a second and screamed louder than anything i have ever heard.it turned around and walked back through the pasture into the woods.to me it looked like a neanderthal man with hair all over.my grandfather was 6'5 and weighed about 260 pounds.this thing was at least a foot taller than him and i would guess around 400-450 pounds.we stayed up the rest of the night and the next morning found a large fir tree that looked like something had crawled inside and had been sleeping.the branches were broken.we never saw this thing again and my grandfather never talked about it.the weather was mild and the moon was almost full so we had good light.don't know what it was,but if anybody knows about guns,you ain't gonna jump" up after being shot with a 50 caliber bullet!! sorry the story was so long.thanks

If your Grandfather shot it, why didn't you track the blood and see what it was for sure?....

i was shaking like a leaf.there was no way i was going after something that big.i was just glad it left.we did check the spot where it fell but did'nt see any blood.the ground was still hard and we did'nt see any foot prints.of all the times i needed a camera that was one of them!but i never ever thought that we would encounter something like that.my grandfather called the sheriff the next day and asked if anyone had reported a shooting.nobody did.he thought it may be someone playing a joke,but what are the chances of that happening?we went to that area several times after that but never saw anything again.a few days after we saw this thing,a farmer in the area said he found one of his goats with its head "twisted off it's body.the head was wedged about 7 feet up in a tree between 2 branches.the local authorities said a mountain cat or bear had done it? thanks.

Where was this? Are you sure its not just a bear?

this was in south-western kentucky.at first we both thought it was just a bear.but it was walking upright.normally a bear will walk on all fours and then stand up on it's hind legs.it did'nt have the mannerisms of any bear i had seen.we had hunted bear in that area before,but after it got close enough to see,it was'nt a bear.my grandfather had shot 3 or 4 bears through the years and each time it only took one shot to either kill it or seriously hurt it to where it would die in the area.we went through the whole area a few weeks after this and never found a thing.what really shocked me was that almost as soon as it hit the ground,it was right back up.kinda like saying "that did'nt hurt".the scream was like taking 10 bobcats and handing them a microphone.i have never heard a sound like that before or since.i was told that another farmer had seen it,but was too embarrased to tell anybody.those hill people were pretty tight lipped about stuff.it looked similar to the bigfoot in the paterson film,but the face looked different.to me the face looked more human than ape.it was also taller.thanks
