There is a mystical old woman living in a small village in Guofu town, Qijiang county, Chong Qing city, China. The woman is nearly 80 years old. For the last 70 years, she has eaten smallstones every day and appears to be healthier than other villagers her age. According to the "Approaches to Science" TV program, Darong is a typical village in that area. However, because the strange old woman by the name of Luo Kairong lives there, this secluded village has become famous. A villager said, "She is very healthy. We have never seen her unwell. She is competent at several things. She can carry things in the fields in winter and cut firewood in her bare feet." We understand that Luo has eaten small stones for more than 70 years and even once ate half a wall. From her appearance, she looks like any other elderly peasant. There is nothing overtly different. Granny Luo said that she is particular about the stones she eats. She never eats "soft" stones; her favorites are the very hard green sandstones gathered from the mountains.
To her, the harder stones are tastier. She eats stones just like ordinary people munch on peanuts. Looking at the doubtful expressions in our eyes, she brings a red cloth bag from her house and stuffs her mouth with a handful of gravel. Granny Luo eats these stones nonstop and chews with great gusto. Seeing is believing. It is hard to believe that an 80-year-old woman could consume so many small stones. Granny Luo told us that her teeth have been worn down from eating the stones. She has had to replace her dentures three times. Then, why can an elderly person swallow a stone that is seemingly tasteless and hard to swallow without being choked or falling sick? Experts say this could possibly be related to the fact that Granny Luo has eaten soil since childhood.

Hey... the minerals thing was not so far off. This is actually a disorder called Pica
http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic1798.htmMy son actually had this from around 9 months to 18 months. He would eat pebbles whenever he got his fingers on them. Of course, I tried to stop him!

I don't know how she could be healthier than the others her age, perhaps she just has good genes? I don't think eating rocks would make anyone more healthy than the next person but maybe i'm wrong. I couldn't imagine trying to chew up rocks, at least she has dentures and obviously a strong rear to be able to handle expelling those rocks.

Wow-Ever heard of Stone Soup??

I wonder if she ever gets kidney stones??

No but really, that is insane. And her parents let her do this?? I'am assuming they did considering it carried on from childhood till the ripe old age she's at now.

I would assume the parents thought it was odd for her to be eating stones as a child. I wonder why the parents didn't stop her, or did they try? I wonder if there is going to be an in depth interview completed with the woman? I'd like to hear more about her opinion and stance on why and how this came about. I for one am not going to go out and start chewing on rocks just for her.

Pica is an eating disorder that is characterized by the repeated eating of non-nutritive substances over a period of one month or longer. Patients may eat non-edible objects such as paint, plaster, dirt, ice, or laundry starch. Pica generally affects small children, pregnant women, and people whose cultural environment is most compatible with the eating of non-food items.

her health comes most likely from all the minerals in rocks.

I once had a patient who, for the four years I knew her, had only milk four times a day to live on. She refused any medications, all nutritional supplements, not even her sister could get her to eat. This was then and still is the most bizarre thing I have seen as far as diet goes!

She probably eats regular food too. Chickens eat small pebbles. It helps with their digestion or something. In any case, it's normal for chickens.
To the parent who stopped her/his very young son from eating pebbles--maybe you shouldn't have. Think of all the money you could have saved on food. (If it caught on, Nature's Best would put out their brand of Organic Pre-washed Rocks, no salt or sugar added.) Yes, yoiu would have had a rock solid individual, a real wall of strength.
This would give new meaning to Rocky Road ice cream. Rock and roll would be a food choice instead of a music genre. She may be the next Rocky. Maybe she's a bleed-through from a parallel universe. In any case, the lady rocks!

Senility. lol
I think it is some kind of vitamin or mineral deficiency that prompts this woman's desire to eat stones. All the talk about her being healthy because of eating stones is BS. I'm sure she eats normal food too.
I personally know people who like to eat chalk and sometimes even pieces of brick.

I have to admit--when I was a child, I suffered from this. My mother didn't know what it was called (now we know it's called Pica), and I was so young, I only have vague memories of chowing down on stones and mud pies. My mom says I would also eat egg shells (yuck!), broken glass Christmas tree ornaments (ouch!), and chew on a decorative brick wall we had inside the house until my gums were bloody (eek!). She said that small pebbles were my favorite. She broke me of the habit when I was about 3, but I must admit that the smell of clay, sheet rock and soil still appeals to me.
I don't know what causes this affliction, but I think it does have something to do with malnutrition or an iron deficiency. I currently have pernicious anemia and have to take B-12 shots once a month.
One thing I have to say about eating stones...I didn't have a weight problem back then. Hm.
