Sony has officially announced the U.K. price of the Playstation 3 as £425, representing the fully featured PS3 which comes in at $599 in the U.S. and 599 EUR in Europe. GamesIndustry.biz suggests that Sony won't be selling the cut down model over the pond, although this isn't confirmed. The PS3's price in England is higher than the console's price in the United States and Europe but we're not entirely surprised by this: British consumers are used to paying more for their consoles (although traditionally the U.K. gets identical or lower prices compared to Europe). Here's a breakdown of the U.K. premium over U.S. and EU prices:
£109 more than the U.S. "Premium" PS3: the U.S. price is $599 which converts to £316. Take this away from £425 and you're left with a £109 premium.
£20 more than the EU "Premium" PS3: the EU price is 599 EUR which converts to £405. Take this away from £425 and you're left with a £20 premium
Now check out the price when compared to the Xbox 360:
£146 more than Xbox 360 Premium: the Xbox 360 Premium is £279. Take away this figure from the PS3's £425 price and you're left with a £146 premium.
£206 more than Xbox 360 Core: the Xbox 360 Core is £219. Take away this figure from the PS3's £425 price and you're left with a £206 premium.
If we were in Sony's shoes, we'd feel very uncomfortable right about now: the combination of a chunky U.S./U.K. price divide combined with the absence of a cut-down PS3 bundle doesn't stack up well against the PS3's main competitor: the Xbox 360. But wait! When we stepped into those Sony branded shoes we forgot to take the free prescription of Prozac hidden in the heel! Ahhh, much better. Now we'd say something similar to the Sony marketing rep tasked with announcing the news:
"I don't think it's an expensive machine; I think actually, it's probably a cheap machine ... If you think a Blu-Ray player by itself might be GBP 600-700, and we're coming in at just GBP 425 - it's a bargain."
Sony's "but it plays Blu-Ray" line works if you're addressing early adopters and hardcore users. However, the British public (the majority of which associate "PlayStation" with games console, and not much more) won't take kindly to hearing "bargain" and "cheap" in the same sentence as "four hundred and twenty five pounds".
Wow...Just, Wow. What in the world is wrong with Sony these days?
For the Americans who don't see the big deal, if this price was in dollars it would be
$204.50. It's honestly insane.

It does seem a high price, but when I think about it, i payed about £350 for my first PS1. The price will come down slowly (hopefully LOL).

PS3 is a waste of time. What's new? Nothing. It's just a suped-up version of the PS2 with better graphics. IMHO you should get a Wii, much cheaper, much much much much much more innovative, or even an Xbox 360, pretty much the same specs, cheaper price.

Or you can just wait till the price drops
And more games come out!!!
ok, you give all your savings and you sold your grandma's soul for PS3
What about the games ? Or are you going to buy some PS2 games for your PS3 because there will be only 3-5 games with it's release ????

Sony is gonna be screwed. I knew if that if they could not launch the system with a price tag of less than or equal too $500 then it's not gonna sell too well in the states. Well, now that i think about it, they have blu-ray which can hold like 25 gigs per disc, which would mean the possibility of many games on a single disk. I think that may sound like a good idea on paper but noone's going to like the idea of buying a $600 system.
My opinion, blu-ray is why this is so overpriced and an overall bad idea at this time. Games are not going to need 20+ gigs of storage for a LONG LONG time!

its not so much for the games right now as it is for the movies. its an arms race between hd-dvd and blue ray each have movie ocmpanys backing them. hd is cheaper but blue ray is better quality. and lets be honest espicly in todays day and age people go for the quality (not that hd-dvd snt good quality blue ray is just better)

how much is the xbox 360 $300-$400?
my friend already took his back because he said there wasn't anything good about it, and $600 dollars isn't that much if your a gamer, people spend much more on their computers and only use them to get emails or stuff like this, i wouldn't be surprised if ps4 or xbox 720<?had internet on it.

Well Down under the regular PS3 will cost around $849 and the premium will cost $999. The price though drops relativelty quickly as consumers simply refuse to pay so much although it does still take awhile for it to be viable for most to puchase.
In comparison the permium 360 is around $649 and apparently the Wii will retail for between $260 and $320. I was personally looking at getting a Wii and a PS3 but now I may just be happy with a Wii for awhile.

Its really no problem if you think about it...
When it comes out there probably wont be a lot of sells cuz of the price but when it comes to half price it would be reasonable enough.
Plus it comes out in Nov.17 2006, Christmas Sales, Boxing day is just in another month to wait for a sale.
The Playstation series was NEVER about the game graphics really. Its the game play and the variety of games that makes the Playstation good. But anyways since its next gen, its appropriate enough to have a good graphics. So know the X Box users cant complain about the graphics cuz its much better than the X Box. Obviously..
Btw I love all consoles, Im just getting the facts straight.

As I stated earlier in this thread the premium PS3 down under will cost $999 and the regular PS3 will cost $849. The prices have yet to be finalised though and when released their will be some variations but dont expect it to be much cheaper than what has been stated so far.

please betamax was ten times better then vhs and vhs won that battle. And Blu ray isn't better quality it just has more space the hd-dvd thats what makes it better. But your right its about blu ray sony only wants to get blu ray out there and if blu ray wins this format war they will get royalties for every blu ray disk giving them boat loads of cash far more then any product they are going to sell, by then HD will be standard in broadcast and television sets. And they know the ps3 will sell Americans will eat it up time and time again Americans, Europeans and any other mainstream gamer will by anything as long the graphics look good.
The blu ray does cost a lot a stand alone would cost $1000 dollars but that because companies want to cover the cost of research and factories as early as possible because they know there are people out there who would spend that money just to get the latest and greatest,
I think sony announced the price early just to get the shock out and have it die down by launch. I still think the PS3 will sell out just because HD fanatics will get a blu ray player, search the web a lot are excited to potentially get a blu ray player $400 cheaper. And we got the hardcore gamers who will be camping out Wallmart 3 days before launch.
