You have to remember that was a different time. I remember when I was growing up my brother had the run of the neighborhood at age 5. I don't agree with it though. I never let my kids run wild. People are just so stupid.

Mary Flora Bell was one messed up girl and so was Norma. I'm actually surprised that they let Norma go without much fuss. Also, I hate it when criminals profit by writing their autobiographies

Mary was even granted anonymity. Sometimes I feel our judicial system is too lenient. We need tighter laws!

If anyone, it was Mary's mother who was responsible for these crimes. Check Mary's personal history and it becomes a hell of a lot easier to understand how such a little girl could become a sadistic killer.
It starts with her mother trying various methods to kill her own daughter from the moment she was born and keeps going until she's selling five year old Mary to her gentlemen clients for extra profit.
Such circumstances don't excuse the tragic deaths of two innocent toddlers but all those responsible should have been held accountable. Three tragedies could have been prevented if someone had only stopped her mother's endless abuse.

I imagine because Mary's friend Norma took part in the killings, or at least the mutilation of the body. Norma must have carved an "N" for herself and then Mary added the 4th slice to turn it into an "M".

^ Thanks! I didn't have any links, I studied her case (amongst many) when I wrote a thesis on child murders in 2004. All my internet sources are stored on my old computer and the rest of my information came from books, newspapers, court scripts etc.
If you want to read up on Mary's case or are just interested in the topic in general, a good book to read is "When Kids Kill" by Jonathan Paul. It's informative and well-written, citing cases from all around the world and many different eras. It really is an eye-opening piece of text.

And thank you for the book recommendation. I'm always looking for good true crime books to read.
Another creepy child murderer to read about is Luke Woodham in "Child's Prey". It is about the Pearl, Mississippi school shooting.
It has parts in there about how he tortures his dog, I was in tears literally.

This is a very shocking case, from the start of Mary's abuse by her own clearly insane mother, to the calm way they killed that little toddler and spoke of it afterwards.
Some children are born evil, others are made that way like she was, but the end result is chilling.

I've known about this case for years now. In my opinion she should have neeever been released. Even if she has "changed now" that doesn't give her the right to get out of jail like she never killed those people before, especially the first baby she killed. That's just not right.

her past should be taken into consideration, im sure her prison time while she was younger then most people who end up in prison would probably effect her more.
i think its not fair that her mother never got sentenced for anything even though it was mostly her fault. i dont even see where she got child abuse charges or anything.

And for god's sake guys she was the one who asked for the damn anonymity, so the least she would want is to call attention to herself once again, like when the book came out. Personally I think her release was the best thing that the judicial system did. Since they found her guilty the brush her aside with the name of evil child posted on her forhead. They should have given her some mental treatment like the did to Norma. I think the release from prison was when her real punishment really began, because she had missed so much. And it was then when she realized what she did, she says so in her book. She says there is not one day that goes by and look at her daughter and think about what she did to the family of Martin and Brian, she took them away form their families forever.

I read about Mary Bell in crime libary a while ago. At the begining I really thought she deserve the worst. But then as I kept on reading, I began to feel some compassion for her. I read the two books by Gitta Sereny, the Case of Mary Bell and Cries Unheard, is my favorite book, and I think you guys should read it before saying anything.
I can't think bad about Mary, as hard as i push myself to hate her, the thought of her being a little girl being hold down by her mother while men would touch her on her private parts and sexually molest her makes feel terribly sad for her.
"The acts of a small child, however terrible they were, can only be seen in the context of childhood" Gitta Sereny. There is a difference between, Mary, the child she was, and the mother and adult she is now.
To all those people who say, serial killer are born, I don't agree with them, Mary Bell shows us that one is able to change, and that we as human being are born good.

It really makes you wonder how some people are allowed to breed. Mary's mother should have been charged with something and not allowed any contact with her. I can feel sorry for mary but at the same time I can't help but wonder how an 11 year old can do something so callous. It just boggles the mind.

Oh yes, Pomeroy... Now in all honesty, even with all the study I did on children who kill children, I could never find anything even approaching a reason for Pomeroy to act the way he did. He was a nasty piece of work, plain and simple.
