The safest place for an asteroid to hit the Earth with the least ammount of damage would be the Sahara Desert. It would go boom and no one would notice.

That's probably correct, as pertains to initial impact and structural damage, loss-of-life, etc.
However, any asteroid large enough to reach the surface of the planet, while most certainly going boom...long before it hit the ground...would almost certainly not go un-noticed.
