Not sure if anyone is interested in this, but this video is different, interesting, with great animation and came out in 2005.
I believe this played on the Discovery Channel some time early last year.

I love Alien Planet. wub.gif This program is just too cool, I've seen it twice! I don't watch too many things twice.
Carajbu

You mean Ike and Leo (the probes)? Yea, they do sort of look like whales..

i see alien planet as a speculative accurate scientific program. life on darwin iv is animal life and are multicellular. they might be common in the milky way and other habitable galaxies. but civilizations might be rare. their is probably only a handful civilizations in the universe. on ther other hand, plants, bacteria, and animals are probably common.

Oh yes this! I watched it awhile ago. It was really interesting and fun to watch, looked really good effects wise too. It really made me wish, and hope we really do find something like this one day, even though this was all speculation.

Your comment just reminded me of something.. many can not afford these channels.. but what's worse is that many MORE of us may not be able to get these channels in the near future - or any channel for that matter.

Currently, we have an analog PC Tuner card connected to our cable service. We also have cable service connected to our analog 60 inch TV. We record various shows this way because we often don't have time to watch what we want due to our 2.5 year old twin boys.

Recently, Bush signed a bill that by the year 2009, there WILL BE NO ANALOG TV channels - and I for one can NOT afford going digital, nor can many other families.

And other things are going on now.. I tried to prevent the Anolog bs from passing, but failed. BUT NOW there are other things that congress is looking at, and that is how we access the internet and all.. business and people. Anyone get the eBay letter from the CEO today about it all today?

I guess we can enjoy today, but no telling what tomorrow will bring if we don't try to do something about it.

looks good, im off to get a copy now! thanks everyone

i hope this isn't the one with the flying whales in it and the forest with human like plants...that one was the most unrealistic garbage i've ever seen. flying whales "OK" lol they might as well have put pigs flying.

Yes, if you see post my post # 4 in this thread, I also posted a pic of them, I responded to that already.

The "probes" named Ike and Leo in this video do look a bit like whales..

It is quite an imaginative video.. And for I for one love whales. Keiko, aka from Free Willy, who was also on our Oregon coast for a bit before he was finally set free, is a fav of mine.. Sad he died in 2003 but at least he died in freedom.

Anyway, I am glad they used whales and NOT flying pigs! laugh.gif
xstortionist
yea that show was ridiculous...they said they had some of the so called "top scientists" together and they came up with the concepts of other worlds....who in the hell thinks up flying whales? Come on lets be more realistic here. Even in hitchhikers guide to the galaxy the whale couldn't fly.

I am glad YOU noticed what I wrote.. it's too late for the Anolog thing.. that IS TO HAPPEN in 2009.. *sigh*

And now with the lastest thing coming up.. I would really not have taken notice to this.. until eBay's CEO emailed me a very important letter about it. (I usually just delete ebay add emails.. but this was NOT one of those)

In addition to what I read and what I've thought for a long time.. did you know that the ONLY US government that has EVER made money was the POST OFFICE? And now they are suffering because we all do so many things over the internet.. I only pay ONE bill through the mail now.. all others can be done on the internet.

I don't have to write a letter and mail it off to so and so in Norway or Holland.. I can easily EMAIL them.

I have no idea what we will do come 2009 when anolog will no longer exist.. We will have to wait and see. But this internet thing that the big companies are trying to control on businesses and people and how we access certain websites etc.. is REALLY crossing the line.

You can read the SHORT version of what I am ranting about here:

PROTECT THE INTERNET BY MAKING YOUR VOICE HEARD
It is hard to believe, but lawmakers in Washington are debating whether consumers should be free to use the Internet as they want in the future.

The phone and cable companies are using their political muscle to promote legislation that would divide the Internet into a two-tiered system – a "Pay to Play" tier for large companies that can afford the fees and a slow lane for everyone else.

Join Meg Whitman and millions of other Internet users and write your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative today!

Write your representative about this important issue!

Other scary going ons I found here and there are some VERY nasty things happening...

Digital telly is not all that bad. Here in Oz we made the transition in most major areas without too much hullabaloo or major cost. For instance, one can purchase a digital set-top box for approximately $80.00 Au, and it plugs into your existing antenna. In some cases the antenna will have to be upgraded. (In most cases about $200.00 Au for a replacement with you average Joe Sparky) Not a massive outlay and the quality and range is far better. You still have free to ar TV (Although from what I understand of American telly, it is unpopular there?). It is not about controlling the masses, or monitoring, far from it, it just costs too much to have 2 protocols running, both in production and maintenance. The stations lose too much in profit. In fact it is easier to 'hack' analogue as well. A replacement card for your PC should cost you about $60.00 -$90.00 Au. Main difference to the viewer is the increased clarity and no more fuzzy channels. With digital, it is there or not, once the signal fades, everything pixilates, freezes and goes blank (called the "digital cliff" where the signal loses strength or "falls off"). It should, if anything, hopefully bring these programs closer as digital TV is far easier for recordings. Also pic in pic and playback functions will increase your viewing pleasure greatly.

I am sure you agree that some policing of the Internet is a must. Like any free resource, it is greatly abused.

Feel free to contact me if you have more concerns, I know a bit about this stuff, it's my career thumbsup.gif I hope I can allay your fears. And thanks again for the link thumbsup.gif Went to watch it last night, but I will have to convert it to play on my standard DVD player sad.gif

progress is good in my opinion (id hate to still be watching black and white tv and analogue video cassettes instead of dvd's wink2.gif ) , if your really stuck for money just buy a digital to analogue converter and its all good, or as previous post stated a cheap set top box ($45 here and it maybe cheaper by then,, there even talking about giviong them away free)

its also about freeing up airwaves as the digital signal dosent take up anywhere near 1/2 of the bandwidth of the analogue ones, and currently the airwaves are saturated with them

I've seen it twice (first time because I wanted to, second time because nothing better was on). Pretty good. I like those flying things that stabbed their prey. thumbsup.gif

A similar book came out about ten years ago. It had many of the same creatures and the planet was named Darwin also.

Can't remember the author. It had excellent pictures and gave speculation on the environments and habits of the animals.

The book was "Expedition" by Wayne Douglas Barlowe.

I really liked the show, 'Alien Planet'.
I thought it was interesting, imaginative, and of course the graphics were great.

God, I love this show...

i found the gfx dated at the time, but loved the show, there was of course many assumptions made based on sound science, but thats what made it worth watching, i love seeing what could be in this type of doc, what we already know is old hat wink2.gif
