Gamers Shoot People in Face
Jack Thompson says the activity is unique to gamers and hit men.
by Daemon Hatfield

June 5, 2006 - Remember a time, roughly 30 years ago, when video games were just getting started and people weren't being shot in the face? Florida lawyer Jack Thompson is on a crusade to return the world to that time—when the only threat of having your face blown open came from your local hit man, not those young punks hanging out on the corner.

Thompson needs no introduction to the gaming community. For years he's been vocally condemning games as the cause of youth violence, global warming, hurricanes, bird flu, and teen pregnancy. The opportunist has recently seized on another violent crime to evangelize his message to the world: usually some variation of "video games will be the downfall of society!"

After two teenagers in Florida were arrested on suspicion of murder, Thompson suggested to the authorities that they search their homes for gaming paraphernalia. Deputies seized several games rated "M" from one of the homes, but West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Capt. Spence Dilworth was a bit skeptical as to whether the games provoked the boys to commit murder.

"I think it goes beyond video games, but who's to say?" Dilworth said of the crime. He went on to say that the question of whether games cause violent behavior is "more of a debate for the living room rather than the courtroom."

But Jack Thompson doesn't need to have that debate anywhere. Of the suspects, who reportedly beat their victim to death and shot him in the face, Thompson said: "Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer."

IGN has launched an extensive investigation to determine whether or not anyone has ever been shot in the face by someone other than a hit man or a gamer. Stay tuned for our results.

Nobody who exhibits such discriminatory behaviour towards gamers as well as such a lack of intelligence should be listened to or respected in any way, shape or form.

I would mind doing it for you, these people annoy me too much. In fact, game violence has DEcreased since the likes of GTA, aparantally its something to do with showing gamers what its actually like to do these things and show the consequences. But he blames games, what about these films? has anyone seen sin city latley?

I read somewhere, im tryin to find it on the net with no luck, that kids see over 10,000 deaths before the age of 12 now adays. From TV, video games etc.

This number has increased extremely rapidly.

I was a counter strike addict, and the only way to be good at that game is headshots.......

Give me an M4 and a squad of counter-terrorists and we'll take care of Jack.

Violent games may attract violent people, but violent games do not make violent people.

On the other side of the coin, I worry about what can be done with the Wii's controller in terms of violence. If developers make Wii games that have neck-snapping and throat-cutting, like in Hitman and Splinter Cell, then it'll just throw fuel on the fire for Thompson.

First off, there is no 100% proff that violent games make people do bad things. There are repotes that they do, but one repote can say one thing and a nother can say soming alse. So I dont trust those with out 100% proff. geek.gif

All so violent games can releve stress. Wen I was in high school that was how I blow off steem, and I never killed any one. I blam the parnites. If you can't take 3 seconds(Yes I time it) out of your day to look a rating then your a bad parnite. mad.gif

huh.gif For your mind? A book is better.

Unless your talking about physical exercise...in that case neither are good for that at all. wacko.gif

i've no idea who this fool is but games don't make people violent. these people are usually violent anyway. and saying it's only gamers who shot people in the face.....what! all that proves is there a good shot saying it's young people who play games is like saying it's young people who are young. how many young people do you know who don't play games and how many of them are in jail for car jacking a stallion driving to there local gun shop buying a uzi and some health and body armour and starting a gun fight in the street with the police (ala GTA). w00t.gif

Yeah there are, they're called text adventure games.
