Or, put another way again, 666, or the mark of the Beast, the Devil's home address and a sure sign of eternal torment for all of us. In short, it's a pretty unusual, once-in-a-century event. Although, of course, if you haven't noticed it's 06.06.06, that already suggests that the date is far less important than some evangelical Christians have been hoping. Indeed, if you're still reading this article, you've already proved quite a few people wrong. Because, according to the conspiracy theorists, we should already have been visited by some quite nasty plagues by now. What's more, all copies of The Scotsman should have been consumed by fire, thanks to the giant comet that's due to strike the Earth. And, just supposing that the paper did survive all that, your attention would have been grabbed by the blinding sight of the Lamb of God transporting 144,000 Christian virgins up to heaven - leaving the rest of us to tidy up the mess.

The number 666 has taken on such cosmic significance because of a bizarre verse in the Bible's psychedelic Book of Revelation: "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred three score and six." No-one has been able to give a straight answer about the precise meaning of these words since they were first transcribed in the fourth century AD. Their significance is anyone's guess.

Well, I think the only thing that is close to the apocalypse that's happened here is I accidentally spilled some hot coffee on myself when I woke up this morning. That stung a bit.

Most historians think the number 666 refers to the emporer Nero, whose name when spelled in Greek, can be added up to 666. This is done by assigning a number value to each letter of the Greek alphabet, and then calulating accordingly.

Nero burned Rome and blamed it on the Christians as a way to drum up popular resentment against them.

The 666 also configures to another Roman emporer, I forget his name, who was also antagonistic to Christians. So it could have been him, too. Remember, the Emporer Constantine evnetually embraced Chrisitanity, making it the state religion after years of persecution and throwing Christians to lions at the games. Emporer Julian, who came after Constantine, despised the Christians, and tried to reverse Constantine's Christian acceptance edict -- Julian might have been successful, but he was killed in Persia before he could carry out his full policy.

But this points out that some books of the Bible, like revelations, were written for political purposes by early Christians. The Rev. authors wanted to take slap at Nero, so they cook up this book of fake revelations -- and today, people have swallowed the whole hoax as having some kind of real meaning, thinking everything in the Bible is God's divine word.

Anyway, I have heard the movie is laughably bad. That little devil boy should have just been sent to bed without any supper, or had his X-box priviliges revoked.

On this website I have to keep in mind that we have a mix of those that believe in God and those that do not. I myself am a strong believer in God and I always will be nothing can change this. But I do not hold it against anyone that does not because everyone has a choice in life. But 666 may be the number of the beast but people it's just a number like any other number. Depending on how you apply that number in your heart is how it becomes evil. Depending on your own belief is where your heart will take you. I had no doubt when I went to bed around 2:AM on 6/6/06 that when I woke up the day would be no different that any other day. And now its 2:02 AM 6/7/06 and life goes on. Put your faith in more meaningful areas of trust not in numbers. If or when this Old World should ever end it will not be written and it will not be told. It will just end and no one will be able to do anything about it. What we have now today cherish and hold tightly and thank what ever God you believe in for it. Time is only a measure of existence as our own clock ticks towards its last breath into the unknown.
