Full Version: Thing in the sky?

Shadow Hunter Ryzi
Hi,

I wanted to ask you for some opinions on this... It doesn't sound too paranormal..

Three of my friends (Chris, Lewis and Jabba), and I, were sitting in class one day, in the third story of our High-School, right against the window.
Jabba suddenly started saying "Hey look! A glowing thing in the sky!"
Rather than looking I continued to work and just said "It's the sun, dumbass."
He told me it wasn't and I looked. It had the appearance of a star, but brighter.
"Well it's a planet then" I told him.
We all pretty much agreed it was mercury (As it was early morning).
But then Lewis pointed out how could it be a planet (or star, for that matter) when it's in-front of the clouds?
I looked and said "Wow, what could it be?". I knew it wasn't a plane, as it wasn't moving and the lights would be flashing on-and-off, not continously shining.
We all continued to do our work... As Jabba stared at this thing.
"Hey Look!" He shouted. I turned back and seen the thing slowly vanish into the clouds, as if it was getting smaller.

Your thoughts? Could it even possibly have been a extraterrestrial spacecraft?

I've heard the city I live in is big on UFOs.

It was most definately a UFO as it was an Unidentified Flying Object.

Whether or not it was an alien space craft is a totally different question.

I myself say that to people alot. =P

I should have been more clear. I'll edit my post now.

Ok, this was back when school was in session, early in the AM. Well, there are plently of planets visible in the winter and spring morning skies. The planet Mercury twinkles and is quite visible. I'd guess that you were seeing Mercury.

Yes, that's what I thought... But the clouds, the sky was covered in clouds and this was sitting on top of one. And a planet wouldn't just sink into the clouds anyway.

Oh but eXploit, It was not definately a UFO as we were not sure that it was flying at all.

And if it was a planet (Which it couldn't have been), It wasn't Mercury.
"It is often hidden in the glowing embrace of the Sun."
The glowing object was rather close to the sun.

This happened between 9:30am and 10:30am
FireMoon
I doubt very much it was Mercury... Astronomy has been been a hobby of mine since i was a child and i've seen Mercury on about 5 occasions, all of which, were in places out in the middle of nowhere... I very much doubt anyone has *casually* observed Mercury for along time as it is so close to the Sun as to be lost in its glow most of the time..

Venus yes, Mercury very doubtful..

Mabey just a reflection off something in the classroom that showed up on the window

On a slightly overcast day (cuts the Sun's glare), early in the morning (in winter) Mercury can be visible...if you're looking for it. I've seen it twinkling quite a few times. However, FireMoon is correct, you'd have to be really looking for it...it's not real obvious. So, I guess perhaps Venus is a better guess here. Frankly, it's pretty difficult to figure exactly what these guys may have seen.

Just to add, I sort of mis-read the original post as indicating that the object they saw was really near the sun...that's why I guessed Mercury!

The reason I personally don't beleive it was a planet, is because it was completely OVER a cloud, not glowing through it or anything OVER it. It was closer to us than the cloud was.
