Recently I've been prompted about low virtual memory on my desktop. Then my computer automatically restarts. It's weird coz most of the time it happens when I'm just typing proposals for work using Words, with no other programmes running. I also realised that Task Manager has been disabled and I don't know how to enable it back again. I've run Norton and AdAware and no viruses were found. What's happening? crying.gif

If you press the Windows and Break keys (Click), your computers properties will come up. How much memory does it say you have? (i.e. The bottom statistics).
Katryona
2.01 Ghz, 1.0Gb of RAM

It sounds like a trojan, with that much virtual memory I don't imagine that it could be getting used up, and many trojans are able to prevent the Task manager from opening.

To enable task manager:

QUOTE

-Click Start
-Click Run
-Enter gpedit.msc in the Open box and click OK
-In the Group Policy settings window
-Select User Configuration
-Select Administrative Templates
-Select System
-Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options
-Right click Remove Task Manager
-Select Properties
-Tick 'Disabled' (Yes, you click Disable to Enable it. wacko.gif )
-Press OK

The parts highlighted in red are what I modified, the original instructions were on how to disable task manager.

I hope that helps.

Oooohhh...I have my Task Manager back now thumbsup.gif Thank you so much kiss.gif

But what should I do about the virtual memory and auto restarts?

Raptor
^I'm glad it helped. thumbsup.gif

It may just be that you have a regular program that is taking all of your virtual memory up, but it could be a trojan. Either way, go to task manager and look under Processes and in the Mem. Usage list (click it to show processes in the order of Memory) look to see if any programs are taking up particularly lots of memory, and just search on Google the 'image name' if you aren't sure what it is, and you'll be able to find out quickly what is causing the problem and if it's a trojan or not. yes.gif

I just got the blue screen of death crying.gif It said something like this:

QUOTE
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.

MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x8054D5F0, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F)

QUOTE
A machine check exception occurs when Windows XP and your hardware platform cannot recover from a hardware error so that the system can continue to run successfully and reliably. More specific diagnosis of machine check exceptions is difficult, and there is no general solution. Contact your hardware manufacturer or a computer hardware technician for help with troubleshooting this issue.

Machine check exceptions are frequently caused by one of the following conditions: • You are running the processor or mainboard beyond its specifications. For example, you are overclocking the processor or bus. We recommend that you run your hardware at the manufacturer-rated speeds.
• Noisy power, overstressed power strips, outmatched power supplies and failing power supplies can destabilize your computer. Make sure that you have a stable, reliable power supply to your computer.
• Extreme thermal conditions caused by the failure of cooling devices such as fans may damage your computer. Make sure that your cooling devices are all working.
You have damaged memory or memory that is not the correct type for your computer. If you recently changed the memory configuration, revert to the previous configuration to determine what is wrong. Make sure that you are using the correct memory for your computer.

Microsoft Support

It sounds like the bolded point is the most likely, have you recently upgraded your computer in any way?
Raptor
EDIT: Actually, that Microsoft Support page doesn't look like it's for the same bug check.

See if this helps?
Katryona
Nope not really. The only thing new is my LCD screen. Do you think it could be the over-heating problem? My CPU is in a little enclosed area.

Btw I thank you again for wasting your time trying to help me. Really really appeciate it. My housemate, who is a computer engineering degree holder won't even bother to help me.
Katryona
Thanks for the link. However, I don't understand most of the stuff they are talking about. I'm not that computer literate no.gif Sorry. I guess I'll have to call in the professionals soon.

laugh.gif Haha, no problem. I'm always happy to try and help. yes.gif

From reading a few different places, the most likely problems could be:
-Your motherboard is faulty
-You need to reduce your hyperthreading value
-You need to reflash your BIOS

Hopefully if you get someone to try and help they'll know what that means and how to do it/check if that's the problem. thumbsup.gif

i gave my virtual memory paging file size 3000 minimum and 4000 max and never have the problem you dont have to change it that high but try changing the paging file size in the virtual memory settings to something higher and it should sort it out.

Also i used to always get a blue screen of death and my computer restarting it turned out i had to many componets in my comp and the power supply could not support them all so i had to get a better power supply but that does not mean yours could be the same problem.

What do you mean by many components in my comp? Does it mean hooking up too many things to it? Coz I have printer, a scanner, a USB wireless network adapter, my iPod and my speakers hooked on to it. Is that too much? I need the printer, scanner and network adapter though coz I work from home.
Raptor
^I don't think youll have to worry about that, the error code that came with your blue screen seems to be specific to problems with the computer itself.

Do you get the blue screen a lot? If you do, you could always try doing what Chaoszerg said, and unplug your printer, scanner etc. and just see if that stops it.

I had a similar problem recently it turned out to be a self protecting adware virus it disables the normal ways you would try to delete it and affects some of your systems applications the only way to completely resolve it is to reload your operating system and start over.
