Excellent post Big cheese! I remember you posting in the belief thread I created sometime back.
Yes, nothing can be proved or disproved because the basis of every religion is so very vague. Each believer believes that his reasoning and molding of religious beliefs of god are the most pious and noble ones.
Man has developed several mechanisms to succeed and basically survive. Religion is also such a mechanism that most people depend on. You were right when you said that it's a coping mechanism. Belief is important because it gives you something to lean on and also motivates you psychologically to give your best. While beliefs themselves might be full or crap, they still work for you in certain ways but certainly not in ways that most religious believers think.
Most religious believers tune themselves and bank on their faiths to such an extent that questioning their beliefs will only weaken them. They do not dare to question because they are afraid to find answers that will shatter the foundations of their survial mechanism. It would leave them absolutely listless, so they would prefer to be in their comfort zones than see more reason and go against the school of thinking that they have grown up with and got accustomed to.
