I read the article on this. The actual picture filled up the entire screen, the one I saw.
I read some peoples opinions about it on another site. They said perhaps it was a fox, but I don't know what it is for sure.

Phew!
Oh if you look at the enlarged photograph, don't forget, the creature as some road kill in its mouth. Which appears to make the creature (which as far as I know looks like a fox) to look as if it has a large head/snout.

Wow neat pic.
Definitely not a domestic dog. There is nothing about it that resembles a domesticated dog.
While it does look very similar to a fox when you first look at it, there are a few features that stand out showing it is not a fox.
Firstly the tail. The tail is too long to be a fox tail. And it is not nearly furry enough. This tail is very skinny and the fur is short like a short-haired cat. Also the red fox (which this would be if it was a fox judging by the red fur and whitish cheek area) would have a bright white tipped tail. The end of the tail is not white. The whole taile is the same coloration.
It was mentioned that maybe it's a fox who was not in his full coat and blew it for summer. But when a fox blows his coat his tail is still quite bushy. The rest of his coat is shorter, but the tail is still thick.
Also I don't think it has mange or any other hair-loss disease. The coat looks like it's healthy and at the length it's supposed to be. A fox with mange would be obviously scroungy. The coat on this animal looks like it's in good condition and at the length it should be.
Another thing is the guy who took the pic wrote in the article how he at first thought it was a baby deer when it crossed the street. This would mean that the animal is probably a decent size. At least the size of a medium dog.
Most people are under the impression that foxes are bigger animals like dogs. Foxes are actually not much bigger than a cat!
So I don't think someone would think an animal so small would be a deer!
It's also definitely not a rat. The tail is covered in short fur. And the body shape is nothing like a rat. And definitely not a domestic cat either!
It actually maybe looks like a mix between fox and something in the weasel family.
***BUT*** If you wanna go the strange animal route... It does look like a 'Tomarctus' which is a looooong extinct ancestor to wolves, foxes, coyotes, and dogs! It was fox-like in appearance and had a long skinny tail!!!!
Hmmmmmmm
Here's a picture of what they supposedly looked like.

Oct 20 2003, 03:23 AM
it is certainly a strange pic , the tail is pretty long for a domestic dog . but one cant rule out the possibilities. the picture that Moon sent in looks like the TASMANIAN TIGER which is believed to be extint

Well, since no one can quite seem to decide what the chupa looks like at all, it could be. I'm not sure what the hell it is. Maybe some kind of weasel.

Well going by the "alien" and "scales" theory anyway.
Of course if chupas look like weasel things then perhaps it could be.

i think it looks like a fox and some domesticated breed of dog's offspring...but im pretty sure i can rule out cat...ive seen bob cats while hunting, and in the zoo...and also, some fauns are very very small, and could be mistaken for a fox when running or sneaking (as their bodies are spread out, and legs are small, so all u see is a short stump of a body). im not in any way over ruling your statements, just putting in my 2 cents...better make it one cent, i cant really spare too much

The one who took the picture mentioned within some of the posts on that website that the lights in the background that look like eyes are just lights from houses in the background.
dissapointing huh

?
And that animal is not a fox. the tail is not a fox's tail at all. trusty me, i am obsessed with foxes and know what they look like. It looks similar to a fox. but the tail is not a fox.
And yea while it could look like a fox/dog hybrid, foxes cannot breed with dogs so this is not possible either. Unlike wolves and coyotes, foxes and dogs cannot breed together.

hell, i was about to post that i thought it looked like a wallaby leaning forward when i saw this. It has the tail and big hind legs of a wallaby, but i don't think there are any carnivorous scavenger wallabies living in northern new jersey. However, i have met some people from this area, and they are quite carnivorous

i think i saw one of these coming home last night lol, almost ran it over too. we all thought it was a cat, but when it got right in front of the car, its head was more canine shaped, but its body was definitly feline. it went under the car and didnt make a sound, and we couldnt see if we did hit it and just didnt know it (it was dark)...o well.
