Several scientists confirmed that the Cardiff Giant was a genuine fossil, though the president of Cornell University expressed doubts.
Last year, Mr. P.T. Barnum, the showman, had a sculpter carve a replica, after the cousins refused to lease hin the original for $60,000. Hull and Newell came to New York and started proceedings to prevent Barnum from showing his competing "giant".
But their action interested the press, and investigative reporters have proved that Hull employed a Chicago stonecutter to manufacture the original from gypsum, staining it with ink and sulphuric acid, giving it the appearance of great age.
So Barnum is in the clear: he is only exhibiting a copy of a fraud not the original as thought. It is Hull and Newell who have to explain themselves!
I'VE HEARD ABOUT THIS BEFORE, BUT IT WAS NICE TO COME ACROSS THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ABOUT IT.
