Can anyone give me some info on unexplained sounds? I am hearing a humming sound at night when I am laying in bed and it is quiet. It is not something from in or around the house, it seems to be inside my head. I can hear it more clearly when I wear earplugs and block out all the other background noise. I live in the country and not near any high power lines 'cause I know sometimes they make a humming sound. I saw something on an unexplained mystery show about some people out west I think, that hear this sound too.Can anyone shed some light on this or have experienced anything like this?

Hi Ken, and welcome to UM. original.gif

I don't think your problem is paranormal, I suspect it's medical.

A member of my family had a nasty fall as a child, and for years afterwards, whenever things were quiet, could hear a machinery/humming noise in their head. A doctor told them it was the blood vessels in their ears, I think.

if you hear it more clearly when you use air plugs then it is definately in your own body. havent you ever heard your own heart beat. well this may be blood running through your veins. that is my guess. good luck with your problem.

tongue.gif I have the same probleme exepting that I can hear two differants noises. It's an ear probleme. Sometimes, when a noise is too loud, like the music in a concert or a chainsaw or a plane, it provocs a choc in the ears and then the sound can come from time to time or it will stay for ever (in french the name for those noises are accouphène). The doctors can't do nothing about it.

That happens to me to, but only when it's quiet. I hate it. It bugs the crap outta me....

i know how you feel with the noises because i am a commercial diver and the pressure of the water screws with my ears. I sometimes hear things that seem to be there but are not.

Check with your doctor about the possibility of having tinnitus. It is a medical condition that can be caused by many things (ie, medications, ear damage, ear infection, psychiatric issues, etc...). Generally, a near constant background humming, buzzing, or ringing is heard. Unfortunately, there is nothing much to be done for the ringing itself, until the underlying mechanism of injury is discovered.

Good luck.
In case you'd like to know more about tinnitus...

Tinnitus, suffer from it myself but it tends to be more of a ringing noise. Does it get worse if you've been to a bar or club where loud music is playing? Has it started recently, if so I'd go and see a doctor - can't be too careful.

Ken, I've read somewhere that that "humming" noise can lead to alien abduction. However, I don't beleive in aliens

Thanks to everyone who replied. Sure hope it's only in my head.
