Okay, here goes.... I'm a very spiritual person, recently renewing my faith in God. I have always been interested in the paranormal, but throughout my life I haven't experienced more than a "feels like someone is watching me" episode. My mother and brother have had experiences with apparitions and black clouds. Anway....
I haven't been able to sleep at night, I toss and turn like I can't get comfortable. Like my mind won't turn off. About three weeks ago I heard footsteps coming from the den into my room, stopping at my bedside. I wasn't facing that side of my bed, but I felt like someone was standing there, leaning over me, looking at me kinda lovingly. I turned over and no one was there. Just to be sure, I checked on my two small children, because my daughter sometimes walks in her sleep. They were both fast asleep.
Last night I was lying there, sleepless once again, and I heard the footsteps from the den to my room, this time stopping at the foot of my bed. I figured it was my daughter and lay there waiting for her to crawl into bed with me. I was laying on my stomach, feeling like someone was watching me again. After a few minutes, I got up to put her back to bed. But no one was there. Once again I checked on the kids. Once again they were asleep.
I think that the body/subconscious can be aware of things going on that our consciousness cannot. What can I do so that I can get some sleep at night? I don't feel threatened, but i need my sleep. How do you tell a ghost to go away without making it angry? Thanks all.

Since you have just renewed your faith in God, you have the power to make anything leave. Just ask "it" to leave by saying, "In the name of Jesus Christ, please leave my home". You shouldn't be bothered anymore after that.

Try
reading this link and see if any of that sounds at all like what you experienced.
Good luck!
What Ragus said does make sense.
Just to add my two cents – you say that people in your family have had paranormal experiences before, so I assume your family is very sensitive in that sense. Is there anyone you are worried about? Was your renewed belief in God a result of something that happened lately? Are you still looking for any answers regarding something?

I'm not going to fully support these methods, but here are two things you can try:
Dream Catchers: You can make your own or buy one. I know it's a superstition, but for me they have worked. I do not remember having any nightmares since I got my first dream catcher, and now I have three hanging up around my bed. Two are hand made and the third one is from a little shop.
Glass of Water: I've tried using a "Glass of Water" myth that I heard about to keep away nightmares. The dozen or so nights I have tried it, it's worked. All you must do is, before you go to bed, fill up a glass or cup with water, and put it above your bed on a stand or something. Keep it near you when you sleep, but above you. The glass of water will keep away bad dreams. Each day before bed empty the glass and refill it, hopefully using the same glass. This should keep away negative dreams.

Yes, that is truly a myth.

You need to look in to lucid dreaming.
Here's a link. Using lucid dreaming you can control your dreams. There are many books on how to start lucid dreaming as it is a fascinating subject. I assume that you could 'provoke nightmares' using lucid dreaming.

Watch a bunch of scary movies -- ones that truly scare you. The best kind for possibly inducing a nightmare are those that have to do with Satan and evil.
