"What ever happened to Lillith?" If you hadn't heard, Lillith was Adams first wife, Made from the same clay as Adam, and she was his equal. Apparently, she didn't like Adam's assumption that he was boss, and left.

Has anyone else heard of this? I originally heard about this in a humanities class while discussing world religions. Apparently, this is one of many omissions that are absent from the bibles that many read daily. It was a Talmudic legend. Any more additions?
theSOURCE
One legend states that Lilith became the first vampire, who would drink the blood of newborns.

Here's a quote from the book Fallen Angels:

According to one of the creation stories, Lilith was Adam's first wife, made by God out of mud and filth. But the young couple didn't get along at all. Indisputably the world's first feminist, Lilith considered herself Adam's equal, and objected to lying under Adam when making love. When he insisted, she flew away -- and Adam went wining to God. God selected three angels -- Sanvi, Sansanvi, and Semangelaf -- and sent them to retrieve her. They picked up her trail by the Red Sea, where they found Lilith carrying on with a hoard of lewd demons; by them, she had already produced hundreds of little demons, called lilin. The angels relayed God's order -- that she return forthwith to Adam -- but Lilith refused. In a gesture of compromise, however, she did swear that if she saw the angel's names written anywhere near a newborn, she'd spare that baby's life. The angels took the deal.

When Isaiah speaks of "the night hag," who dwells in the wilderness with wild beasts and hyenas, it is Lilith he is referring to. And it's Lilith in Psalms 91:5, too, when we are promised God will protect us from "the terror by night."

This is an absolutely facinating topic and I must say that I do find it quite interesting . I have not heard of Lillith before . H ow many other legends are there concerning her I wonder , ?
Also the SOURCE , have you got a copy of the book of fallen angels on hand . Who wrote it and when ?
I'm going searching .. original.gif

Looky here according to this there were more
QUOTE
From Adam's union with this demoness, and with another like her named Naamah, Tubal Cain's sister,

sprang Asmodeus and innumerable demons that still plague mankind. Many generations later, Lilith and Naamah came to Solomon's judgement seat, disguised as harlots of Jerusalem. [Yalqut Reubeni ad. Gen. II. 21; IV. 8]

In total agreement with you kismit, this is really intresting as I'v never heard of her either...more info please original.gif
Kismit

I must say the more I read the more it sounds like the old view of witch craft .

QUOTE
Lilith, in a rage, uttered the magic name of God, rose into the air and left him.
with all the flying ..

QUOTE
Lilith and Naamah not only strangle infants but also seduce dreaming men, and one of whom, sleeping alone, may become their victim.

I still don't know anything about the sources of this information though .

It could be that it was originally written to discredit women and make them appear evil . This was certainly something that was tried by the catholic church centuries ago . Around the time of the witch trials . So does anybody know where the original information about Lilith comes from ? Could be very interesting ..

I found this .. The story of Lilith was originally found in something called The alphabet of Ben Sira Circa 800CE ..

Tis very witchy isn't it ...... huh.gif

"Heal my son. If you don't, I will kill you." Ben Sira immediately sat down and wrote an amulet with the Holy Name, and he inscribed on it the angels in charge of medicine by their names, forms, and images, and by their wings, hands, and feet. Nebuchadnezzar looked at the amulet. "Who are these?"

Kismit, the name of the author is Robert Masello. Al also has some interesting books on the subjects of demons.

Thanks for the links everybody. I'm going to take my time to read through them.

A possible reason she chose to murder newborns was to seek revenge for the killing of her own demon children.

Lilith was also called the mother of the succubi. A succubus is a demon who appears in female form to seduce men into sacrificing their souls and leading them to eternal damnation. Their favorite prey were saints.

The Demon Queen

Interesting from a symbolic point of veiw: Several sites mention that she a) collected the blood of the slain children and cool.gif collected the semen of the men she seduced. It was pointed out in one of the articles that the blood, being red, represented Death, while the semen collected, being white, represented Life.

It would be interesting to see if there was also a third face to her, or if Life/ Death were the only aspects of her.

I am currently tossing over two different theories but I must say there is alot of work in backing up either one .

First theory it seems this could infact be used as credible evidence that more of the teachings of christianity are based in ancient wiccan belief . The original religions of tree or nature worship . Is Lilith a representation of Ghia or a maternal Nature spirit . You know I allways thought we needed a God and a Goddess running the show . Balance just seems so essential to me .
Second theory with the original apperance of Lillith being found in "the alphabet of Ben Sira" apparently in muslim country around the seventh to the eleventh century. I went in search of historical tables to help me out here , but as I said there is a lot to go through . Around about the 5th century there appears to have been an attemped by the Romans to invade an area around Eygypt . My second theory is that the original piece of work was a piece of political propoganda used by the church to try and conquor the muslims . But I don't know if Eygypt or it's surrounding area were even muslim nations at the time . It would really help if anyone could tell me were these manuscripts where originally found.
I guess I'll keep looking

Each is fully entitled their own opinion, but please realize that Judaism did precede Christianity, and that the Talmud was one of the early Judaic works. As well, please note that in its earliest forms, Judaism was an oral religion...the stories and traditions weren't written down until much later. Whether this attributes to, or detracts from the possibilities being discussed, must be left to the discretion of each individual in making up their own minds.

You are putting way too much into this (or way too little thought). Lilith is not a representation of Ghia, Earth, or any other "good" presence. Lilith is attributed with several properties, the least bad of which was raping men in their sleep. She is also the demoness who strangles and/or steals babies. She is referenced by several religions as "night hag", "screech owl", and "night evil". In religous "comparisons" (only TRUE open minds can "compare" religions) she is attributed with only evil counterparts such as Hecate. She is, in some myths Asmodeus' wife, and in others both his ancestor and his general.
If you are looking for a champion, find a worthy one. You may not believe in evil (a topic I would LOVE to debate in and of itself), but at least pick someone who is nice -- not someone whose only cross-religion characteristic is killing babies.
soulfire78
Lillith was an interesting starting place, but after reading some translations of the talmud, I am becoming MUCH more interested in the theory that the Old Testament was translated incorrectly (and possibly purposely) to make women seem inferior. Apparently, the original texts had Eve being created from half of Adam...More his equal counterpart than his inferior rib. Would you object so strongly to this idea, HBP?
*MoG*
I don't think the Bible was translated purposly to put women down.

Why would they have bothered? It's only been in the last 100 years that men have even considered the possibility of women being their equals. 2000 years ago equality would never had entered their heads.

I believe the Bible was a collection of stories handed down from generation to generation, which is why a lot of them appear in other religous manuscripts.

I would love to know if there is any truth to these stories, or if they were told simply to teach the difference between right and wrong, good and evil.

Wildcats shall meet with hyenas,
goat-demons shall call to each other;
there too Lilith shall repose,
and find a place to rest.
There shall the owl nest
and lay and hatch and brood in its shadows;

It's funny because I have been studying about Lilith and the Hebrew Myth and I suspect that they fitted the mythology into the scriptures to control women. To prevent women from thinking they were equal to men at the time. To keep them from not being subservient to men. And, what's really cool is that Michelangelo painted his version of Lilith in the Sistine Chapel. It's the famous painting titled "Fall of Eden" where Adam and Eve are tricked by the serpent with a woman's head and upper portion of her body. (Back then, they believed it was actually Lilith who was the serpent inticing them to eat the apple of the Tree of Knowledge, but it was the voice of the Satan (or whatever you want to call him). She is definitely my favorite subject to talk and learn about.

Are you talking about the new or old testament? Either way they are both remarkably accurate historically, and there are some very ancient copies of the torah that show how little it has changed over the years, the process used in creating them pretty much prevents any errors.

The New Testament is undoubtably true (at least in the since that Jesus was a historical figure, along with his appostles) it is affirmed by other historians from that time period.

I'm not saying that there are other historical records of him being raised from the dead or born of a virgen. (although I do believe in the devinity of Christ) But you cannot argue that it was simply a word-of-mouth tail.

This is my first post to a form like this, i usualy don't respond to any kind of chat, one reason i think to fast for my hands to keep up and a lot is lost in trans and another i grew up with dislexia, however I no matter how bad i spell it is a bit more like short hand and i get my point across anayway. I have been reading in these fourm pages all day today and got to know a few of you and i feal this is the place that i fit in best and this toppic in particular cought my eye I could not resist.

The book of nod tells the story of lilith. It talks about her being cast out on her own and cursed, I wolud assume that is where the vapirism came from.
It also talks about a time when Cain was cast out on his own and she took him as her husband, and thats when the weired Springer like story unfolds.
I had also heared that the myths and folklor of the tales of lilith originate with Jewish beliefs so if there is any body who knows how falliable the story is a Jewish p devil.gif erson may know.

I'm surprised Adam didn't let Lilith ride on top! He didn't know what he was missing! Yeehah!!!

I briefly read over the thread because I know a little on Lilith as it is. To me she is nothing more then a myth. I doubt she ever existed and I doubt she is even the first wife of Adam. I read many stories were she and Cane were lovers. I read about her being a vampire and giving birth to Dracula (kind of silly in my opinion). In the mythology however she was given soul to the Djin who were demons who gave wishes to those who ask but in the worst way. There is a lot of myth surrounding such belief in Lilith. Is she a goddess? In ways yes. She pertains to be all-powerful and full of fury just like most goddesses however she is also a demon. She is evil because of her hatred for men and for her cruelty to children. Though I don't believe in pure evil or pure girl I found her to be a foolish demonic being who does these things for revenge. She hated Adam therefore she hated all men. I don't know I have a weird mind with things like this.
shirini
AngelicWitch, You wrote that Lilith gave the Djin the power to grant wishes in worst way.

The Djinns’ originally nature spirits, were later imprisoned by Islamic Clergy in inanimate object to be only freed by the kind heart of their discoverer. Vengeful, the Djinn’s took the wishes, never telling the wisher that they have to be specific when making their wish, and filled in the parts that were missing.

Lilith, the first wife of Adam, later became jealous of Eve’s children being so beautiful and her children being demons would steal and feed on the children of Adam and Eve. Thus, Lilith is thought to be the original vampire.

The myth of Lilith and Cain being consorts is talked about in a role-playing game by White Wolf called Kindred: The Embraced. wink2.gif
AngelicWitch
Well according to what I read the Djin were Liliths children... But that is a whole another story.

I first heard about Lilith from the book of Nod, available from Llewelyn Publications(Minneapolis, MN) Other parts of this myth remind me of an urban Legend regarding a woman named La Lorna, info about her should be on snopes.com or something, I first read about her in a book called The encyclopedia of things that never were. In my home state of South Dakota there is a variation on both of these women called the badlands banshees, interesting read in a book called Haunted Heritage,

I remain...

It is true that anything is possible!

I was born in Iran, and my father has master degree in Middle Eastern Lit and Mythology. Thought it true that Lilith is mention in the Islam, she is does not belong to Islamic or Middle Eastern Mythology, where as Djinn’s do. The classes of Djin were first establishing by Old Persian Mythology, stating the Class of Djin began when the Old Persian demi-gods had children with humans. Old Persian traditions simply look at them as a lower class of angelic being. With the coming of Islam, all old mythology like the class of Djin were pronounced Evil, and that is where the modern ideology of the movie "Wishmaster” came from.

Lilith belongs to Jewish Tradition. Lilith has never been mention in old Middle Eastern myths, such as Old Arabian and Old Persian traditions. However, since Islam and Judaism are somewhat similar, Lilith is indirectly mentioned in the Islamic Tradition. original.gif

Lillith
There are so many different tales of "Lillith" that I can't help but to think that Lillith is more than one person.. With that said I think that the Lillith that Soulfire is getting at is one of these..

1) God created man and woman as different species, Adam and Lillith, but they did not get along and Adam rejected Lillith as his mate. So God cast Lillith out of Eden and created Eve form part of Adam so he would feel more secure.

2) It is also said that Lillith was, indeed, made from the same clay as Adam and lived with him in the Garden of Eden. Adam was the "King" of Eden and Lillith, his twin wished to be co-ruler with him, but God would not let more than one rule.. Lillith was suposedly very wise, while Adam was less wise than she, and because of this Lillith refused to make children with Adam. God was furious and exiled Lillith out of Eden. Samual, an angel, fell in love with Lillith and bore three half-god half-human children, called "Nephilim". Their wisdom, power, and beauty was so great that the Children of Satan were afraid of them and called them monstrous names to defile them, but Lillith would not let herself become defiled, her beloved Samual helped her learn the wisdom of God and became the first witch. She lived as a daughter of the night mother, calling the people to dance and be joyous of the light of the moon, and those that followed called her Arionrhod.

Okie dokie,

I've read from various sources about the events of the mythological tale of Adam & Eve, Cain and Abel, etc.

Now, I've read that the Christian(?) God created Adam and then Lilith his first wife. Lilith did something to tick off this deity so he cursed her with vampirism. Soon after he created Eve.

Where did this tale originate?

Homosexuals, lesbians, the henchmen of Lilith, who sterilize themselves, and women who use contraceptives devolve within the Infernal Worlds.

The supporters of induced abortion and the women who wilfully abort are also seen in the sphere of Lilith.

Male and female adulterers of the world are also found in the sphere of Nahemah.
It is stated that Adam had two wives, Lilith and Nahemah.

Lilith is the Mother of abortion, incest, homosexuality, contraception and pederasty, etc.

Nahemah is the Mother of adultery, lust, fornication and sexual abuse, etc.
The Infernal Worlds within the interior of the Earth are divided into two inhuman spheres: Lilith and Nahemah.

In this epoch of racial devolution, the multitudes of the Left are devolving within the submerged spheres of Lilith and Nahemah.

The Great Illuminated Beings, that is to say, Sabaoth, fight in order to make the multitudes of the Left comprehend the crude realities of the facts.

Unfortunately, the multitudes of the Left think that they are doing very well.

This terrestrial humanity has reached the maximum of perversity.

Humanity frightfully devolves in this instant of mundane crises and total degeneration.
This devolving terrestrial humanity is entering into the submerged mineral kingdom in surges.

Human beings will destroy each other amongst their own selves in a horrifying way, if the expected cataclysm is delayed too long.

Unquestionably, the ego becomes more and more complicated as time passes.

The complicated ego becomes terribly malignant.

Frightfully, this terrestrial humanity has already failed and will become more and more perverse through time.

To live normally upon the Earth will be something more than impossible within a short period of time.

Malignity will be so great that within a short period of time, human beings will, in fact, have two thoughts in their minds: First, to kill; second, to be killed.

Very shortly, in the direction that we are going, death, assassination, vice and perversity, multiplied to its maximum, will reign in every house.

The great catastrophe that is expected has converted itself into a non-delayable necessity.

Only the great catastrophe can save us from the most horrifying terrors that the ego will let loose over the face of the Earth.

We presently have no more hope, except for the universal blazing Fire.

I have a drawing of Lilith giving birth to the Serpent Prince...It comes from an old 'grymoir' (I think that is how to spell the word?) and is extremely explicit.
Lilith was said to be half beautiful and half ugly and was also said to have created the 'underworld' out of anger toward God.

I would post it here but the image would get me arrested.

Lillith was a babalonian/sumatarian/mesobatanian deity. Once again we see one religion taking something from one and using it in thier own. Unfortunatly it's in negitive light, much like Lucifer.
Wild_Woman
She sounds like the first feminist. Adam said he was boss, Lilith said "push off, i'm yiour equal" they got separated and lilith went off to live on her own.
jhondoe
helloi was also in search for info on lilith and came to this forum i wanted to toss my 2 cents i read many books on the creation and what i found is that.
1 the bible was changed keep in mind that the bible is like a diary passed down and copied and recopied in many languages by the prophets that where charged to guard it the first one of which was adam.

this explains why the storys although some what different always seem to keep the theme of son of god half human by mortal mother hercules , thor etc.

2 you got to keep in mind that the world was made first in spirit and then in form same goes for plants animals and adam.
this is why theres so much confusion about what hapen wen in spirt and what hapen wen in flesh

can spirit have offsprings with flesh just as flesh can with flesh and spirit with spirit? ill leave you look that up.

3no one knows for sure what adam looked like although we have an idea that he looked like us keep in mind that god was first creaped in spirit which was like gods then the body was made and the spirit of adam wich was the spirit or angel known as gabriel the angel with the thrumpet original.gif was breathed into the body.

i whish i had more time to write what i found out about the "plan" which is why creation hapen.
ill try to put it this way god wants to be with his like but theres this thing that he dont know how others like him would act so to make sure the others like him dont "actup" he created spirts then tests then in flesh then keeps testing them each time giving them more info and "grace" making them more like him.
the ones that are cool get the thumbs up and become gods the ones that dont really do much become angels and the like and the ones that screwup dont get their bodys back or even a chance to have a body which as we all know is pretty sweet just think how sweet it be to have a body and be as free as a spirit and then add up infinite knowlege well hope i didnt say too much byes

PS: sorry my inglish is bad its not my first language

Lilith is a women from jewish legend. She as we already know was supposedly adam's first wife. Lilith i think was meant to have became a demoness after she was spurned by adam.

To me lilith represents nothing more than women's liberation in a male dominated society.
darkmoonlady
The Lilith that we know is a bastardized version of a goddess worshipped for thousands of years in the area between the Tirgis and the Euphrates, when the Jews were taken and held there they were exposed to the stories of thier captors and one of them was Lilith. It has to be said that turning the Goddess of your enemy into a vampire, blood sucking baby killer is no more than religious propoganda. Religious propoganda in the name of making sure the little lady stayed in her place is rampant among the texts of the bible, and other religions. The King James bible is known to have had many changes to make sure that instances where women were to have ministered, in the preaching sense, were changed to "nurse" or succor. That womens roles in the bible went from being equals being actual contributors to spreading the word of Jesus to becoming no more than just a whore or a virgin,. One poster posed the question why would they do this, well at the time of the king James version, women were still in the throes of early european holocausts where, if a woman owned land, or knew herb lore she was cursed as a witch. Not a great time to be a woman but a great time for the only guy in power to make sure that stayed the status quo. As for Lilith, I do think that more than one woman identified with having the main diety be female only to have the writers of the time go, uh sorry no, lets make her a demon, as we know women haven't historically been held in high regard. The only reason Mary has rose to the hieghts of her followers is she is/was really the representation of the Great Goddess to many Europeans who worshipped the Goddess before pre Christian times. It was safer to worship Mary as the Queen of Heaven, a name before given to the Goddess.
psycho skeptic
Umm...hate to be the bearer of bad news but Lilith never existed. Adam and Eve WERE equal in the Garden of Eden before SHE was tempted by the serpent to give the forbidden fruit to Adam. As punishment God set her socially lower and subject to man (as in male, not the race on a whole). He then made it painful for her to give birth to children and then kicked the two out of the Garden of Eden and thus was the fall of humanity. Sad isn't it? hmm.gif The bible is just full of truthful perils of wisdom. thumbsup.gif

You are correct ma'am. It happened all the time then. Someplace conquers thier opressors... and the gods of those conquered are turn into the evils. That's how Lilith got her bum wrap... and the truth is so befuddled with what people think is truth through centuries of lies... it's hard for Her to get her real image back... which had nothing to do with "adam"

But the question nobody has answered is this...Did Lilith get half of Adam's stuff? And what about visitation rights?
