I'm on the floor. My body is numb. I am getting ready to die," said Hayes.

"The 911 operator accused Hayes of having a mental problem and refused to provide help, according to Fieger. Hayes told the operator, "I am not crazy," according to the audio recording.

Hayes called a short time later, and the operator falsely told Hayes that an ambulance was being sent to her home, Fieger said. As a result of the incident, Hayes was paralyzed, according to Fieger.

Fieger said the city of Detroit has denied the incident with Hayes. A lawsuit was filed several months ago.

In the lawsuit filed on behalf of the Turner family Monday, Robert and his sister -- and now guardian -- Delaina Patterson, were present. Fieger said that Robert, 6, "did exactly what he had been taught to do by his mother."

Robert called 911 twice on Feb. 20 to get help for his mother, who had passed out on the kitchen floor of their home, Local 4 reported. The boy called 911, but was questioned by the operator who believed it was a prank, the station reported.

Operator: "Where's the grown-ups at?"

Robert: (Inaudible)

Operator: "Let me speak to her before I send the police over there."

Robert told the operator that his mother could not talk. He was scared by what the operator told him, so he hung up the telephone, unaware that his mother died, Local 4 reported.- "

i think the way some ppl treat the emergency servacies is wrong and thats why the boys family died even thought the woman might of thought it a hoax she shoulkd have sent whatever emergency services was needed.

luckily for me i have never been in that situation and i dont want to think about it thumbsup.gif

I don't blame them one bit for suing. I know that it's hard for 911 operators, but that resulted in a person being paralyzed. hmm.gif

Luckily, I think it is safe to assume that cases like these do not happen very often. I don't know maybe its just where I live, but around here if you call 9-1-1 even if you hang up they usually try to contact you, then they attempt to locate you and send some kind of help over to see what happened. Its very wrong to prank 9-1-1, but unfortunately it happens. I have done it as a kid, many others have as well.

OK, just a quick qustion.. How does a person with a mental illness gets qualified to be a part of the police force? That's a little... Absurd, don't you think?

That is jsut horrible. Every call should be checked out, and if it is a prank, they can trace where it originated and fine the parents. There is no excuse for the child's mom dying, my daughter was taught 911 from an early age, as well as the fire fighters telling her kindergarten class to do this in an emergency, so all 911 operators SHOULD be sxpecting there to be calls from children.

The 911 operator did not have a mental problem but accused the caller of such.

I agree that 911 operators have a hard job but so do air traffic controllers, doctors and dishwashers. If doing their job badly directly causes someone's death then they are directly responsible and should be judged accordingly.

It doesn't help that thousands of bogus lawsuits are filed each year by people just looking to pocket a buck either.

This is disgusting. I hope that 911 operator can live with herself.
Uh-Oh
That is absolutely horrible. That poor little boy watched his mother die and is going to have to live with that for the rest of his life. I believe that when someone calls 911, someone should be sent to check out what is going on even if they do think it is a hoax. Why let someone die just because you think it might be a fake? It's disgusting.
