I have a loved one who is fighting in Iraq and I was wondering one night...if it was possible to use AP to travel to Iraq and see him...as a spirit or something? I don't know much about AP so I was hoping someone who does could answer my question...
Thanks.

As I understand it, this is technically feasible, and you will probably get lots of advice on how to do it. However, unless you are already experienced, it will probably take you quite a while to develop and train the ability to the point where you can visit a specific place/person at will.
In any event, I am not sure that this is the best technique to use. It is fairly limited. You might be able to see and hear what the other person is doing, but they will not be able to see you, and it would be very unusual if you were able to communicate in any way. You might like to try dream walking, if your partner is prepared to give it a go. That way you could meet on neutral ground and be able to communicate. I don't think this would be any easier to learn, unless you are both people with a natural ability, but if it worked it would be a lot more satisfying.
Again, you will find a lot of people more experienced than me in this area, but the couple of times I have been able to get it to work were fascinating and very rewarding. Basically the requirements are that the two or more people involved need to be able to lucid dream. The second step is to create a meeting place (real or imagined is ok, but the construct has to be as close to identical in each participant's mind as you can get it, and preferably with a strong emotional attachment to it.)
Next, each participant needs to be able to get to this place in their dreams, fairly much at will. Once you can do this you may be able to meet your partner there. I don't know how this would work given vastly different time zones. Some people, but not me, seem to be able to do this while "day dreaming" ie. while in a trance like state, rather than dreaming.
Some people claim this contact is possible while only one of the participants is asleep. I don't really understand how this would work, unless you were reaching directly into the subconscious mind of the non dreaming partner. This process can obviously be verified by contacting your partner and comparing dreams, but at first if you could get it to work, i would just enjoy the experience rather than trying to over analyse it. One thing which might work in your favour is that heightened emotional states are likely to enhance any natural abilities you have.
I really wish you the best in a difficult situation, and with out meaning to sound facetious, I assume you are making the most of all the modern technology available. I know Australian soldiers are in regular electronic contact with families, including the use of web cams.
Sorry if i made any unwarranted assumptions here. I deliberately tried not to, but on reading your log i see you said loved one, which could well mean any family member as well as a partner.
