"Zoologist Chris Moiser, has been visiting the Gambia in West Africa for more than a quarter-century, and has become enthralled by local legends of the river-dwelling monster known as "Ninki-Nanka". An expedition to find it will be returning to the region in 2006."

The fist pic is very similar to the Mokele Mbembe desciptions. Who knows what the heck all these naitives are scared of. Also Killer (Impaler?) of Elephants, name escapes me - Emele Notuku? Something like that geek.gif

Now these dinosaur descriptions are coming from both sides of Africa, and PNG !!! Many sightings have been by missionaries mostly, some war vetran pilots, point is missionaries know the current list of common animals. They are saying a Dinosaur!!! They should know a Hippo for a Sauropod!! How sweet would that be, a Sauropod is the main expectation. A Japanese crew filming a documentary in the Cameroon accidently filmed what they believe to be a massive river dwelling creature that appears to look quite similar to a Sauropod!!! Is this w00t.gif or what.!!!

Problem is, when the naitives were shown books, they all pointed to a picture of a Sauropod and said THAT's IT!!. They also said the same thing when shown a picture of a Rhino. So............chances are real good it is just a Rhino. More of those roaming the earth currently than Sauropods. Still, just like the legend of the Mermaid, another legend solved is a good one thumbsup.gif Cannot wait for the January 2007 expedition to the Cammeroon. Hope it is not just a big fizzer like te 2006 January expedition. All knowledge is good knowledge.

You are right. No Dinos have existed for thousands of years. It will be a Rhino. Makes for a good story and suspense though. I still cannot wait untill it is 100% resolved - one way or another makes no matter. As long as we know just what is going on for real.

Ahh - the quote

It's supposed to be some sort of large dragon-ish thing, but is most likely a Nile Croc.

Only a fool would simply dismiss these sightings as "just a crocodile". Are they so stupid that they don't realize these people see crocodiles on a daily basis and are completely familar with what they look like? Here we have people thousands of miles away on their computers saying that natives who see crocodiles every day "are mistaken" and think they know more about it than the natives. What egotists.

It is very possible that a "sauropod-looking" creature could be found in africa that has nothing to do with dinosaurs. This because there is such a thing as "convergent evolution" whereupon animals of entirely different species, even classes, evolve into very similar looking animals because they occupy the same ecological niche. A good example is the similarity between icthyosaurs and dolphins. Boas and pythons are very different kinds of snakes, yet both evolved into a similar heavy bodied constrictor, boas in the new world and pythons in the old. Long necked sea monsters sighted all around the world may actually be a kind of marine mammal, that developed the same body form as a plesiosaur because the long, snake like head was well suited to capture fish.

Well, a proven wolf attack in India was first claimed to be a supernatural being

I will post more later...

The convergent evolution theory is unlikely, as sauropods lived in a very different habitat and occupied a very different niche than animals in that environment...Animals have found 'better' ways, and evolving back to a long necked predator is unlikely.

Plus, an animal evolving to look identical to another that lived millions of years ago is very, very rare...

Except birds? Right?

It probably is something that was misidentified, like a croc seen at night or an elephant in the water.

It would be really cool if they did find some kind of new large reptile or mammel.

i disagree that its a crocodile. people there are probably familiar with crocs. it probably could be a giant monitor lizard unknown to science. its a plausible explination. or it could just be a giant komodo

Might be worth looking into the local legends a little more.

What we see as just another Nile Croc may hold some religious significance to them because of size terrain or other reason. Some ordinary animals can be considered to have special rights in certain parts of the world.

Really, nobody is really going to know untill an expedition is carried out, and the creature verified by a naitive for someone with a camera. A decent one I hope. People should delete blurry possible maybe pics.

Historically, the largest monitors have lived in Java and Australia, not Africa...The Nile Monitor's range doesn;t even cross into this area...

Crocodile is a much better idea thumbsup.gif
