Thanks for the thread idea MC.
Anybody here play any musical instruments or record your own songs? I'd like to know what styles you play, or what recording techniques you like to use.
I'll start this out. I record my own songs just for my own enjoyment. I play keyboards (analog and digital synths, and ROMplers), guitar (mostly electric, but some acoustic), drums, and bass. I write lyrics, but hate my singing voice.
I record on a digital 8 trac, and analog 4 trac, then transfer everything to cd.
No matter what music style I start out with, it always comes out sounding like jazz fusion, or progrock/soundtrack.

I play the drums. i have been in about 4 bands, but only the last one decided to record our music. it was kind of crazy but we got i on tape. we took a microphone and tossed it over a rafter just above the middle of where everyone is standing (or sitting in my case) and hit record. we were in a basement so the sound was ok. it sounded just like we had been in the studio. nothing was too loud or too soft. we played oldies, some Dave Matthews band, a little punk rock when we were feeling crazy, and some jazz/blues. we had a great time, but everyone was getting ready to go to college, and we werent going anywere with our music, so we just ended it. i miss it some times. but there is always the dream of the next band.

Same here, I have lots of jazz/blues fusion songs/instrumentals. My solo guitar style is like Trey Anastasio from Phish, my singing has been compared to him as well.
I am in the process of getting a band together, but with all the drugies and losers, it is hard to find good people. I have a great drummer though and an excellent bass player.

I used to play classical piano but gave up when I was about 16 to concentrate on my exams and also because I really wanted to learn a few other styles of piano like Jazz but my tutor was a complete old trout and refused point blank to let me do it.

No, but if I had a full band, I would promote some of it here. I would most likely leave a link in my quote like others have done.

No not really, I still jam with all of them every tuesday though. The problem is that the lead singer for that band was always drunk, and now he claims he's going to the Navy (but it wont happen

). So I told him to forget it.
Right now I have been doing lots of solo stuff while filtering through my material. I do play out as a sub for some bands here and there, (on the bass or guitar) but I don't prefer those styles most of the time.

I've played accoustic and electric for about 11 years. I've recorded and played across north america on a short tour. Many reasons why i no longer do at the moment... to many to write actually, but have never stopped playing. I've always played a progressive country/rock/folk style. I also do vocals
One thing i've always wanted to be able to do is record and then transfer on to my pc so i can play with it a bit. Source..... Have you done anything like this yet. If so... what programs have you tried and did your 8 track do alright?

Well, I don't play anything . I do have an Ibanez acoustic that sits there and begs for me to learn how to play it, but I just haven' t done so yet. I'd love to learn classical piano as well, but what I really enjoy is singing, and am afraid I've already had my '15 minutes of fame' (which was about 2 minutes

). Anyway, the weekend before I moved back home from St. Louis we went to a club with all my best friends where a band called Gargoyle Rain was playing. They just did covers, but did them well. After their first set I asked them if they ever let anyone get up onstage and perform with them. They said no because they didn't like anyone messing with their instruments (keep in mind I had never met these guys or seen them perform). Anyway, I told them I didn't know how to play anything I just wanted to sing a song. They said sure, and asked me what I wanted to sing. I told them "Not An Addict" by K's Choice, but they didn't know the music to that one and asked me if I knew "You Were Meant For Me" by Jewel. I did and they said, "Great, you're up first on our next set." I was so excited!!! I sang my heart out, and did a good job.
Now I'm not naive to think that singing would ever take me anywhere in life. The fact that the above happened was a once-in-a-lifetime deal and a dream come true. There aren't a lot of things that can compare to the feeling you get onstage singing in front of a crowd. Especially when they clap and you can tell by the looks on their face they enjoyed your performance.
For those on this thread that acually have that drive to succeed, please don't give up. We would love to see any one of your name's up in lights!

This is the reason I stopped playing in bands. I got tired baby-sitting a bunch of drunks who wouldn't show on time, or missed gigs altogether.

I've been playing an electrical guitar for about ten months, and I can play better than most pop rock bands, because all they do is play the same chords over and over and have ten second solos.

I'm sort of in the process of finding a new band where I will be singing and playing rhythm.
We were based out of a Chicago suburb and we weren't that well known, but we always had positive feedback. The most people we had at a show was about 300. We played lots of bars and open jams.
Our genre for that band was jazz/blues fusion. My personal fav is Jam Band style Grunge. Oh, and I have subbed for a few Nu-Metal bands (on the bass).

I started off early in life with classical piano and horns. When I was eighteen I moved onto bass guitar. I have played in numerous bands ranging from hardcore and thrash through nu metal and rap core. Now I'm into various forms of electronic music. I'm also doing some sound design work for various bands and playing keys for a heavier mainstreem type of band... I just dont have the time to dedicate 100% of my time to music due to my career though so it will remain a hobby!

I concentrate mainly on the Bass now, and sing a little, but I also play piano and Saxophone. What instrument I'm playing usually determines what style I play.
I was trained primarily in classical piano and feel weird when doing anything else really (that's why i stopped, I enjoy band work heaps more than solo).
For the rest, I'm usually in for some laid back blues-ey type sound (I'm big on the whole walking bass thing going).
Until next time,
