Syd Barrett, called a "guiding light" in the early days of psychedelic rockers Pink Floyd, has died at age 60, a spokeswoman for the band announced Tuesday.

The troubled British singer and songwriter, who had spent many years living in seclusion, died several days ago, according to the woman, who declined to give her name.

No cause of death has been made public.

Barrett's former bandmates said in a statement later Tuesday they were "very upset and sad" when they learned of his death.

"Syd was the guiding light of the early band lineup and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire," Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and David Gilmour said.

Shine on, Syd.

If there is a god, I know Syd will meet him, and god will say "Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar."

I have a feeling it may have been a suicide because his mind was always on the edge of madness and suffering and I believe he was bi-polor.

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Are you kidding me? He passed that edge over 40 years ago, why do you think he had to be kicked out of the band? He was also a lot more than just bipolar, he had a full blown mental breakdown. Bipolarness was the least of his worries I'm sure.

It wasn't suicide, he died of complications from his diabetes.

i dident like the way pink floyd made a heartfelt statement,,,,, when in reality the dident sack him or kick him out of the band as in thier own words they just stopped going to pick him up for gigs or calling him for rehersals and recording sessions,,,,, some friends.

Read the history Louie, before you make judgements. Syd was at that time deeply involved with drugs and was completely unreliable, even walking off the stage at one show, cos he 'wasn't enjoying himself'.

pink floyd have told this story publicly many times, we dident sack him we just stoped calling him for gigs.
wich is worse than being sacked, weither your on drugs or not, a band is a group a group is a gang there should be loyality, sack the guy , tell him the reasons,, dont just drive by the house on your way to a gig in the band he started.
