I was in High School, living at home with my parents. Mom asked me to go to the neighborhood grocery store for bread. I started out the backdoor for my short-distance walk when I saw in the western sky a huge ball of fire. I can remember the impression it made upon me. I felt afraid because of its size and the way it seemed to be heading directly at the earth like it would cause an explosion. I knew my dad had just gone up to the second floor to use the bathroom but the window was closed and he could not hear me yell for him. I wanted im to witness this too. I was so taken by this fireball that I could not run in the house to inform anyone in fear I would miss out on whatever was going to happen. I continued to watch as the fire ball is now going due east in the sky, (about as high as a commercial jet would fly) and it was growing a multi-colored tail on it. I watched it until I could no longer see it. The whole occurence lasted about 1 minute. I was awe struck. I never made it to the store. Many years later there was talk about Comets because of Halley's Comet coming. I read an article in a Springfield, IL newspaper written by a Professor at a University in IL. He was talking about Comet West, or Comet East (a specific comet that comes every ? years). I wrote this man a letter and explained to him what I saw. He answered my letter and told me that what I saw was probably a meteorite. It couldn't have been because this fireball DID NOT lose gravity and decline in the sky at all. It came from the west and traveled due east like a jet. It was enormous. I have never heard of another soul having seen what I did that evening but I sure would like for somebody to inform me if they did. The path would have been dead head over Main St. In Streator, Il (rural area) in the mid to late 70's when the weather was nice is all I can say. Clear, starry night, no jacket needed, summer or autumn maybe. I have since learned that two other siblings have had encounters with UFO's also. We are all intelligent professional people who have not lost their minds. Our eyes behold the truth, they give your brain the signal to react. This was Not an illusion. I wish somebody could tell me they saw it too.
